When they say this will be the best day of your trip, they aren't lying. We prebooked our first day with Edventures largely as a result of the reviews we read here. The driver George (Balloo, Gigo...how many nicknames does one guy need?) picked us up promptly when they said he would and drove us to Ed's shop in Tulum. The only downside is the drive time from the Cancun area, but nothing can be done about that and we got to know our traveling companions on the way down, two very nice women from Minnesota.
Upon arrival in Tulum, Ed was on top of everything, getting us set up with snorkel gear, and processing our payment quickly so we could get on with our day. We went to Tulum first on our own. Ed gets you tickets to the park train, so you can avoid the hot walk. The only thing we'd wished we had done (and this has nothing to do with Ed) was to get a guide at the gates of Tulum. Would have been more informative.
After Tulum, Ed got us hooked up with Luis as our guide who took my wife and I and our two twin-cities friends on the best day of our trip to Mexico. With Gigo as our driver, we went to the ziplines across the lagoon, WELL AHEAD of any tour buses. We had the place to ourselves. Not rushed at all. We did the cliff jump as many times as we wanted and the cenote water was so refreshing on a hot day. After that, we went snorkeling in the Dos Ojos cenote (the highlight of our week), where Luis took us through the cave at a relaxed pace, plenty of time to look around. One of our group was claustrophobic and was going to turn back, but Luis was great with her, told her he'd stick with her the whole way and if there was any problem, he'd take her back. She ended up doing the whole cenote and was very pleased with herself at the end for facing her fear. We then went for a great lunch at a restaurant called Buena Vista. A little pricey, but the food was good and we'd have definitely eaten there again had the opportunity presented itself. Following that, we snorkeled with sea turtles in the ocean, a school of squid, lots of fish and a barracuda. Luis was very diligent about finding the sea life and shouting it out to us so we could all come and take a look. Too rough for the reef that day, but we didn't feel we missed out at all. The lagoon was great, lots of fish and a perfect end to a LONG day. Loved every minute of it.
We loved the day so much that we asked Ed and Bonnie if they could hook us up with a trip to the Mayan ruins at Coba a couple of days later. Again, Gigo picked us up at the hotel right on time, took us to Tulum, and we found out that our driver to Coba was going to be none other than Ed's Mom, Judy!! What a great lady! Really told us a lot about the area, stopped at a grocery store for us to get ice for the cooler, kept us entertained, and drove us to Coba in her own SUV. We felt like we were touring the area with a family friend. Once we got there, she got our tickets for us, took us to the staging area, made sure we got an English speaking guide (as we wanted one this time), and then told us to take our time. We had a good two hours touring the ruins, the guide was great and we learned a lot, we got to climb the pyramid, and it was a great day. My wife realized that she forgot her sunglass clips in the bathroom about ten minutes after we'd left Coba...Judy turned the car around and took us back, and fortunately the clips were still there. Try getting THAT from a tour bus. A long day of driving, almost five hours on the road because of the distance to Coba, but Judy took us right back to our hotel in Puerto Morelos and was a complete pro, just like everyone else at Edventures.
Our expectations were quite high after reading these reviews, and Ed's group still managed to exceed them. Next time we're in that area, it's Edventures or nothing. No other tour company we've used anywhere has come close to matching their service. The groups are kept small on purpose, and we NEVER felt like we were rushed or on a conveyor belt like you do with the big tour buses. We moved at OUR pace. As my wife put it in one word, it was 'personal.' And they did everything with an easy going, fun demeanor, all with a great sense of humor. On top of that, the price was better than any other tour company.
To Ed, Bonnie, Judy, Luis, and Gigo...you MADE our vacation and when we remember our 2009 trip to the Mayan Riviera, it will be you we think of most fondly.
Patrick and Shonna. (you know, that cartoon guy from Canada.)
