“the perfect beach experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2008

We were a little nervous as we headed out to Mexico, given some of the reviews of different beach hotels we had read online (e.g. bugs, scorpions, no electricity) but Nueva Vida de Ramira quickly dispelled all fears. We stayed in the largest house, Casa Mexicana, and found not only a lot of space, but clean rooms, large clean towels and bottles of water every day, cool ocean breezes, and wonderful hotel staff (thank you Ricardo!), only feet from a gorgeous beach and not far from a wonderful restaurant, La Zebra, where we practically lived whenever we were not on our beach. There were a few small problems (e.g. no water one morning), but they were fixed, literally, within minutes. The only small issue was that, because it is an "eco" hotel, the lights were few and dim, so it was difficult to see well enough to cook in the evenings (and given the relative lack of cooking utensils, it didn't seem to be expected.) This did leave us free to sample all the wonderful restaurants on the beach. Recommended: Zebra, Zamas, Don Cafeto (towards the ruins), Violeta, and for an upscale evening, Ana y Jose. Ricardo recommended several of these, helped us find tours and a fishing trip, and was generally a wonderful host. A great week at Nueva Vida.

My husband and I got to Nueva Vida for our honeymoon after a long drive past dozens of other hotels. It was my first time in Tulum and I had imagined a much less touristy feeling. All my worries were put to rest once we actually got to Nueva Vida. Even though it was in the midst of all the other hotels, it was very quiet and peaceful. They had accidentally canceled our reservation (a couple with the same first names had canceled theirs and they got us mixed up), but Ricardo and the other staff members were wonderful and helpful and had a place for us anyway.

We spent our first night in Ola, which would be a great place for a few friends to stay, and then to make up for canceling the reservation, the rest of our time we spent in Horizonte Perdido (which is probably the best room in the entire place) for the same price as it would have been to stay in our original cabana. I really highly recommend Horizonte Perdido. The front porch, bathroom, and the floors are tiled beautifully, and the view is absolutely stunning. The cleaning people come every day to clean the room, change the linens, and leave big bottles of water. In the reception area, there is free wifi and also a bunch of books that people have left behind.

The section of the beach in front of Nueva Vida was much better kept than most of the beaches in front of the other hotels. The staff brought out large and clean beach beds, umbrellas, and chairs whenever the weather was sunny (most of the time).

The hotel's restaurant Casa Banana had great food. The restaurant at La Zebra (right next door to nueva vida) was also good-- much larger and actually on the beach. On the way into town, there was a little hotel called Teetotum-- the food there was a nice change, tasty, and about half the price of beach-front food. They had not only mexican food, but also more international flavors, and some good homesick food (pb&j with apple slices for about $3).

The time in Tulum was lovely and I would highly recommend Nueva Vida to anyone.
