“Adequate, not luxury or boutique”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2012 via mobile

We'd read reviews about the noise but thought that all the other benefits would outweigh that issue, plus we have a fairly high tolerance for noise and didn't think it would be too bad. However, we were put in one of the most noisy rooms right at the back of the hotel, furthest away from the beach, and nearest to the nightclubs (room 307). We still thought we'd give it a go for a night to see if it was bearable but it definitely wasn't (and that was a Sunday night). The clubs close around 5am and we also found they get even noisier on Friday night. In addition the room had a really strong musty/ damp smell. I bought incense sticks but they didn't make a difference. So, after the first night, we asked to move.

Fortunately there was another room available (109) which was much better. The musty/ damp smell was still there but much less so. We could also still hear beats from the clubs, but not if we had the air conditioning on. The staff were helpful and amenable to moving us although it took 3.5 hours in the end rather than the 1 hour we were originally told, so it ate into our first day quite considerably. But once we'd moved our experience of the hotel was much better.

Clubs and noise aside the location is very good - right on the beach and on the main 5th Avenue so all the restaurants and bars are within easy reach. The breakfast included in our deal was just a slice of toast and tea/ coffee/ juice. We were told we'd had to pay extra for the buffet so we didn't bother with breakfast, we waited to have lunch on the beach: a couple of guys serve drinks and food all day and assist you with sun beds and parasols. But to get your beach towel you have to hand in a voucher provided by reception, and you have to ask when you want fresh beach towels (not something you'd have to do at a luxury hotel). You also have to tell the maids when you want them to clean the room, they don't do it automatically every day (again not something you'd expect from a luxury hotel).

The rooms are adequate but the two we stayed in were definitely in need of modernisation (they used a very good photographer for the official shots). That said they were nice enough and absolutely adequate. The beds were very comfortable and there are some nice touches like the hammocks on the balconies. The staff were also very friendly and helpful, and once we settled into our second room we really enjoyed ourselves.

So, if you're looking for cheap and cheerful Playa Palms is a good choice. If you want luxury I'd suggest looking elsewhere.

Dear Rebecca,

Thanks for sharing your experience in staying with us. I am glad to hear we had a room that you found adequate for your stay. I am confused what you mention about noise, on the contrary as can be seen in other reviews we resolved the noise issue with the installation our soundproof doors and windows.

I agree with you that we are not a luxury hotel, nor do we pretend to be so. From other comments here on Tripadvisor, I think it is fair to summarize that Playa Palms is a beautiful well maintained beachfront property, with comfortable and well-equipped rooms, where you can expect to get a friendly and attentive service.

Kind regards,

Helge Sturesson

Playa Palms is right in the heart of it all. You can walk to everything from Playa Palms Hotel. The hotels location to shopping, eating etc is really great. We never need to rent a car.

The beach in front of the hotel is spectacular. The staff is great and we feel very safe down there. Highly recommend the place.

Room Tip: We stayed in #108. It's on the first floor and is very moderen with a large fridge and cook top...

Rooms are somewhat basic but very comfortable, and overall are great value for money. Staff are friendly and courteous. The hotel lacks a restaurant but you get $8 coupons for the excellent breakfast buffet next door. Located on the beach and very close to all of the action along 5th avenue. Sound-proof doors ensure that your room is quiet at all times (there are clubs about 500 yards down the street but you cannot hear the music at all). Also provide coupons to use a fully equipped gym for $8 (5 minute walk away). Overall, this hotel is great value for money.

Room Tip: Check out the duplex room by the beach.

Dear George,

I am glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us, and appreciate you taking the time to write this review.

one comment on the breakfast, continental breakfast is included in the price and if you want a breakfast buffet you just pay the difference when you arrive here.

greetings,

Loved it. Excellent location, adorable rooms, affordable, perfect for explorers.
This is perfect for those who prefer to be in a balance between a traveler and a tourist
No need for a hotel restaurant or all inclusives when you are in that area, since the food is great in the restaurants nearby.
The beach isn't very big or private, but from where you are you can just take the taxi or rent a car and go spend the day wherever you want. Since this is one of the most beautiful natural locations and amazing archeological sites on the world. Why would you need a super expensive hotel to stay in it all day?

Room Tip: Try to get there on the low season

What a fabulous place. The location, the rooms, the staff, the value! I was there in low season so got a great deal on Expedia. I loved the hammock on my balcony which I relaxed in each afternoon. Carlos, the concierge was exceptional and very helpful and attentive to my needs.
I personally prefer the boutique hotels from the mainstream ones due to the more personable treatment.
The view from the balconies is exceptional and the sunrises each morning as i ran along the beach were out of this world.
Each time the cleaners came to the room they made animals out of the towels and left them on the bed, was a nice touch!
the only downfall is that you get breakfast next door included however need to pay an extra $11USD for the full buffet breakfast, otherwise you just get toast, juice and a coffee.
fantastic hotel that I will stay at again. Location is great, on the beach however far away from the clubs so you can sleep at night :)

Room Tip: They must all be good but try to get first or second floor for the view

We have stayed several times at Playa Palms and love it. It's right on the beach, a bit private but still right in the center of things. A perfect combination. Rooms are clean and include everything we need. Balcony is great. FYI - we do prefer an upstairs room which offers a private balcony. Love that we can reserve beach chairs each morning and have lunch delivered to us on the beach as well as get a massage just a couple of steps away. It's the only place for us in Playa!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have private balonies.

This is a super clean, modern small hotel with a fantastic staff.
You definitely want one of the ocean-facing rooms, preferably on the higher floors.
They will bring you continental breakfast on your balcony if you ask.
The location is terrific for beach access, though it's not really a prime spot for swimming, etc. Get a beach massage; nothing like it.
It's an easy walk into the main avenues of bustling PDC.
Parking is challenging but they will help if there are (very likely not) no spots on their street.
Bring earplugs. They are located very close to several nightspots who love to blast bad music VERY loudly until late into the night. Another reason to have the ocean-facing rooms.
We loved our room after we upgraded to the front from a little closet sized room in the back by the street. Avoid those rooms if you can and you'll love Playa Palms.
