“Perfect getaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2013

I spent Thanksgiving here with my boyfriend. We loved it! The location was great. No need for a car. We walked to a different restaurant every night with no problems. There are taxis everywhere if you need to go farther. The rooms are very nicely appointed and the staff is great! There is a great gym right around the corner that is at your disposal and the beach is right out the back door. I would highly recommend El Taj.

I stayed in a two bedroom beachside condo for 7 days and it was awesome. The condo was immaculate and everything worked perfectly. The people are great and service is top notch. The front desk staff is available 24 hours a day. There is free wifi and they stock the fridge with minibar items. Next time we plan to stay in a three bedroom.

I was there for a week with my wife.

Pros:
The rooms were fantastic and fully equipped, the staff was lovely and help us with all we needed and the location is great- 1 min walking from the 5th av. There is also a lovely private beach

Cons:
the pool is VERY small (actually there are 2 pools, we was only on the one in the beach side but the other on is also pretty small) and the price is very high comparing to other great hotels around.

Spent 4 nights in room 329 Nov. 18-22. with our daughter & husband. Great room! Beds are comfortable and there was NO noise at night. Slept like a baby. Just a short walk to shopping and great food. The breakfast downstairs was good, with variety and I was satisfied. We ate lunch once, the day we arrived and it was poor quality, cold and very expensive. After that we ate at different venues in Playa and were always pleased. Great Argentinian food just off 5th street, the main drag. The hotel's sister restaurant has breakfast and brunch about 2 blocks away and it was very good, especially the brunch. Great service too! Walked with my husband of 45 years on the beach before dawn and felt completely safe. Beautiful vistas and everyone was nice, especially William the Concierge. A great vacation!

Room Tip: The rooms at ground level don't have any view. Loved room 329.

This is my third time staying at El Taj. I have looked at other properties to stay at while there, to make sure it is the best and none can compare. It has the best location, the rooms are beautiful and staff is very accomodating. I have never had a problem with the noise and I have stayed on both sides of the buildings. I was on the first floor, one room away from beach and next to pool this stay and it was fine. I do prefer upstairs rooms because the view is better and patio feels more open. I would not take a chance on anywhere else!

Spent 10 nights in Penthouse 340, El Taj Oceanfront Condos recently for a milestone birthday with a bunch of close friends. It was just the ticket, close enough to the action but far enough away to sleep peacefully at night and wake up to AMAZING ocean views in the morning. Penthouse 340 is really the pick of the bunch and as I booked a year in advance, the price was very reasonable.
The entire property is very well maintained and the apartments tastefully decorated, modern and comfortable. The only item that needs addressing is the food standard in the Beach Club. It`s ok but a lot of room for improvement considering the pricing. The nearby Imprevist Cafe is much better for breakfast but actually you can head into Playa very easily for a lot of other options.

In terms of the staff and service provided, it was all great. They were incredibly helpful especially the night I had a catered roof top function. Special thanks to Millie at the front desk. I have no hesitation in recommending El Taj. It was a very memorable birthday trip and look forward to doing it again in the future. We were a bunch of 13 people all the way from Australia for this holiday, so it was quite an effort but well worth it. Thanks to all.

Room Tip: Penthouses with a rooftop spa farthest from the night club side are the best option.

Spent 5 nights in lovely El Taj, room 348 (2nd floor). This condo is Oceanside and on the far side of the discos. We couldn't hear the music that other reviewers complained about. There was some random street noise (e.g., car alarm at 7 am once and a garbage truck a different day), but otherwise quiet. There are photos on the internet of room 348 (do a google search). It looks just like it does in pictures. There was a "partial ocean view" from the bedroom balconies, but the primary sight is the street and a vacant lot under construction. The bathrooms were really nice - much nicer than I have at home. Personally, I wasn't fond of the "chocolate" -based shampoo, soap, and conditioner, but my girlfriends seemed to enjoy them.

We enjoyed the beach side "Indigo" restaurant for breakfast, with its friendly service and ocean/beach views. The service was a little slow, but I think that's just the Mexican way. All of our servers were very nice and accommodating. All the waiters were great, but I especially remember Hugo.

The "beach club" (i.e., lounge chairs and beds) is great, but the hotel won't let you bring any food or drinks - including a bottle of water on to their beach chairs- need to buy it from the club. The service was very good for ordering drinks and food.

Our hot tub wasn't working for the first 28 hours, which was a bummer because it poured rain during that time. The repairmen sent to fix it argued with me that it was working fine and that we just had to let it heat up. My Spanish is good (I used to teach it) and I couldn't make any headway. Needless to say, when we called back after waiting a few hours (and it still wasn't hot) they did finally fix it.

The hotel is in a great location, just a few blocks off 5h avenue restaurants, bars, and shopping. The open air discos were fun. On the street outside the clubs, the staff from would offer us free hard liquor drinks to come inside. In order to get your free drink, the waiter needs to seat you. If you try going to the bar yourself, you'll be charged. We didn't go to Coco Bongo. Why pay $60 to get into Cogo Bongo when you can get in these other places for free and get free drinks? A few of the clubs are right on the water with a beautiful view. Dancing was fun!

The concierge arranged a private tour for us to Talum, lunch at a beach club, and snorkeling at the lagoon at Akumel. Our guide Samuel was wonderful. A real highlight of the trip.

A note on money: the ATMs on 5th Ave. are incredibly expensive as many dispense only USD. You pay a 8-12 percent commission on dollars you withdraw PLUS a surcharge to use the machine. (So you could pay $20 to take out $200). On top of that, you then get a lousy exchange rate from the bars/restaurants/shops when you buy something because you are paying in dollars! Instead, withdraw pesos at the airport or go the ATM at the real bank a few blocks away from the hotel on Ave. Constituyentes between 5th and 10th ave. Bring a lot of US singles for tipping. The bars and restaurants had a hard time making change (even in pesos).

Have fun at El Taj!! We loved it and would definitely go back!!
