I cannot understand why this resort is so highly rated. Maybe it is mostly reviewed by owners of the Royal Resort timeshares who just want to ensure their property values stay up. We are Marriott owners so we are accustomed to a certain level of comfort, service, amenities etc. that come with owning at Marriott. We exchanged through Interval and were forced to take the all inclusive package. We were excited about that, something different for us as we generally like to experience local restaurants and night life when we travel. We had to pay $100 per adult, and $50 for our child. I highly recommend you avoid the all-inclusive unless you are one of the drunks at the swim-up bar, trying to get your money's worth. Trust me there were a lot of loud, obnoxious drunks at the pool all afternoon. The resort had 2 restaurants that are mediocre at best. One of them is "fancy" and they have a dress code and you need reservations. The other is a run of the mill buffet place with lots of food but nothing of substance. Very very disappointing quality of food. Even room service and the pool side restaurants had very poor quality of food. The poolside drinks were watered down and the quality of mixers used was not good. The Pina coladas. Margaritas, and Daiquiris tasted like they were straight from a pre-made mix. We learnt very quickly to stick to the Corona on tap. Tips were included in the all-inclusive rate and we were told not to tip, so we did not. The servers realize that there are no extra tips from people with the all-inclusive band on their wrists so they pay a whole lot more attention to those who are not on an all inclusive, which upset us a lot. Another thing we hated was having to sign out for beach towels and we had to guard them and make sure that we bring each one back unless we want to incur a fee. The attendant even said that if the towel is dirty or stained we may have to incur a fine. So every time we borrowed the towels we would check them before taking them, and the attendant would check them when we returned them, kind of like when you rent a car. Who needs that stress on a vacation, on a daily basis?? The same thing with Umbrellas. It poured one day and we were stuck without umbrella. The bell boys loan them out but again they are checked and signed out and in for. Crazy!!! Never saw this cheap behavior in all my years of travel. Housekeeping was great. There was daily maid service and evening turning down the beds. However, nothing but towels and soaps in the bathroom. The day before we were leaving, our house boy came by with tiny shampoo, conditioner and lotion bottles, offering them to me and indirectly expecting to be tipped. Would've been nice we had them from the day we arrived. The staff though polite is a little to tip hungry. Overall very Tacky!
The beach was beautiful. We had a beautiful 2BR villa that was literally on the beach, with a huge balcony with a jacuzzi, and a full ocean view. It made us forgive a lot. The pools were very nice. Lots of space, lots of lounge chairs, steps from the beach. The activities center had lot of fun poolside activities for kids and adults alike. The spa was FABULOUS. We had massages and facials that were just unbelievable and not too overpriced either. The Spa was well appointed, very clean, very beautiful and relaxing. The staff there was well trained, polite and very professional. Definitely an A+. The concierge desk was very helpful and polite. However very eager to sign us up for a sales presentation. Literally each member of the concierge team that we encountered offered us the presentation that we declined each time.
This was our third trip to Cancun so we knew what to expect but overall we were very disappointed especially since this resort is so highly rated and reviewed on Trip Advisor. We were told that Royal Resorts would no longer be with Interval International but with RCI. Wonder if some of what we experienced had anything to do with it.
