“Quiet and relaxing boutique hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

Great relaxing small hotel right in the centre of Playa del Carmen. Outdoor you have the shops, bars and beaches in walking distance, once inside the garden of the hotel the relaxing and silence atmosphere is superb. Very nice staff who will do anything to make your stay even more comfortable. Rooms are nice and clean, bed is good and you can get a hammock and towels for free. On the beach you can make free use of the sunbeds at two different beachclubs. Great value for money!

Room Tip: Ask for a room further away from Coco Bongo. We had no noise at all!

Stayed at the XXX January 15-19th. This was my first time staying at this hotel and booked the room through a travel site. I flew into Can Cun International Airport, took the city bus ($12) to playa and walked north(8min) up 5th ave took a right (west) at 12th 1 block and was at the hotel. The hotel is located directly kiddy corner from Coco Bongo which is heavily advertised so if you can find Coco, you can find the hotel.

The lobby area is clean and quite as it the hotel in general. My room was #9 located on the ground level. The room was very clean and did not have that typical musty Mexican smell which was nice. All the rooms face the pool. The bed was comfortable for Mexico as most beds in the area are very hard.

I tippled the maid $4 a day and she did a fantastic job. The hotel is located 1 block west of the main 5th Ave where all the shops and restaurants are. Also, you are only a 1.5 block walk to the beach where there are several beach clubs. The hotel will give you beach towels to use. The beach club due east from the hotel that they recommend I would stay AWAY from (next to blue parrot). This beach club charges $5 for a beer and $10 for tacos. If you walk towards playa (south) along the beach there are beach clubs about every 50 yards where beer is $1. I walked away from playa about 2 miles north and there were not many beach clubs that way so your best luck is to walk towards Playa.

***If you stay in Playa I HIGHLY recommend eating at the restaurant Tarraya off of 2nd ave along 5th. This restaurant is on the ocean and I have been going here for over 15 years. Literally the best fish I have ever had. The garlic butter sauce and tarraya sauce are my favorites. Also they have a beach club you can use as well. I ate here all 4 nights (see below photos)

Overall I was very pleased with the hotel and will stay here again. I was there Tues-Sat and was not bothered by the noise from clubs or 5th ave. Yes, you will get some street noise like random honking or the church bell but it did not bother me.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side may be not as noisy.

We stayed for a week over New Year's. We cannot recommend this hotel.

The Good:
- Hotel is very centrally located in PDC, 150m from the Beach and 50m from 5th Avenue.
- Lots of restaurants, bars and clubs around.
- Small / boutique style hotel.

The Bad:
- Club Cogo Bongo is right across the street. You won't sleep before 6.00am. You don't just hear some music, the rooms are shaking.
- You have the choice of either freezing to death during sleep or leaving the AC turned off.
- Rooms are dark and the ones on the top floor are right under the thatched roof. Expect all sorts of insects to crawl in.
- "Breakfast" is served at the "argentinean steakhouse" next door. You are right not to expect breakfast to be one of the core competencies of a steakhouse. It's terrible.
- We had explicitly booked separate beds in our reservation. We got king-size beds.
- Beach is very crowded and a little dirty in this area.
- At night the hotel courtyard (pool + bar) belongs to an army of blood-thirsty mosquitoes. We weren't bitten once outside the hotel. The hotel garden with its "jungle style" seems to be a prime breeding ground.

Conclusion:
If you love to party and don't plan on sleeping too much / before 6.00am, this hotel's location allows you to fall out of the bar / club and into your bed right across the street.

If you want a comfortable, relaxing holiday, with good food, good sleep and a beautiful beach, go to one of the nice resorts instead.

If you want a more authentic, "local", "true-mexican-style" experience than in the big resorts, there must be better (and cheaper!) ways than this hotel. Also, this location, 50m from the most touristy place in PDC (5th Avenue) is probably not where you should be looking.

The hotel could have GREAT potential. The inside patio with jungle like BEAUTIFUL GARDEN, really nice swimming pool and wooden styled cabins looked romantic, stylish, sexy, really nice! That was the reason we decided for this hotel. Unfortunatelly the rooms don´t corespond with this image at all, they are ORDINARY, almost borring with office-like furniture and used :(
The location is just fine, in the center of Playa del Carmen (it did not feel noisy...but I guess it depends on your room) and about 3 blocks from the beach. Service was ok (but not so warm and friendly as we expected) and the reception area also felt kind of cold, more like an office than a reception of a "jungle style" hotel. I simply expected more for the price.

Service 3.5/5
- Only one of the front desk managers was helpful. She seems to carry the brunt of the work but when the other staff were working they knew far less about the area. (granted we speak very little spanish so that might be a factor)

Value 2/5
- Considering we didn't sleep at all there are far better places to stay. The pool is small and the water is freezing. There is barely any light in the rooms and our air conditioner stopped working completely! They recycle the same towels so when the room is cleaned they take away the towels without replacing them until later in the day.

Sleep Quality 1/5
- Horrible. You're situated between the noisiest church I've ever heard and the most annoying night club that plays horrible techno music between 11-6:30am. We didn't get any sleep 3/5 nights we stayed here. The music permeates the entire hotel so changing rooms isn't an option either. If the music weren't enough we were also eaten alive by mosquitos during the night.

Cleanliness 2.5/5
- Rooms are overall clean but the hotel has a lot of vegetation around it. We saw lizards, bugs and cockroaches in our room during our stay.

Location 2/5
- Location is great to be able to get to everything. You're close to the beach as well as shopping on 5th avenue. Only issue is that the hotel is further south, which is close to the more touristy locations and has inferior (crowded, dirty) beaches compared to the northern area. Rating goes down given our inability to sleep at all however because of the church and the nightclub.

Rooms
- Decently sized rooms, good water pressure and hot water.

Excellent hotel - just the best spot to stay in Playa if you want more of a real local and friendly experience as opposed to a vast all-inclusive resort! Charming and small with lovely palapas style rooms around a rectangular pool that is great for "proper" swimming - a few laps before breakfast.
Friendly staff, clean rooms that have double sinks in the rooms and smallish showers/wc in a separate area.(the one suite has a jacuzzi and is still a good price).,Beds are large and comfy and rooms have plenty of space overall.
The location is perfect - one block from 5th Ave and many great restaurants, nice bars close by plus some nightclubs. Due to the latter it can be noisy on some nights but not too bad! Very cosmopolitan/european guests overall so its very relaxed!
Only two issues are that the rooms are quite dark at night - need more lights - and the pool barman constantly plays the TV tele-novella's far too loud!
Overall excellent with great pricing - this will always be our spot to stay in Playa.

I went to this trip for a friends wedding, the hotel was occupied mostly by friends. It is a good hotel for what you pay. The rooms are very spacious, clean, confortable, etc. The breakfast that you have included is very complete and just a block away. The only bad thing is the beach to which this hotel has access isnt the best. The location of the hotel is very good, its near to the 5ta avenida, and most of the nightclubs.
