“Gorgeous authentic style..great staff...perfect location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

Our family of 4 (2 sons ages 19 & 15) stayed for a couple of nights before heading to meet friends in Cancun. My hubby really wanted me to see Playa and I found this hotel through Tripadvisor. I was (as usual) not disappointed by following the reviews and choosing to stay at Hotel Cielo! The staff was welcoming (I wish I could remember the lady's name and young man with her) and they were accomodating to our needs from activity and dining recommendations to a forgotten hair dryer. The place is beautifully decorated in authentic Mexican style and the location couldn't be better. I am typically one to insist on beachfront hotel, but was so glad we chose to do something a little different. The hotel was literally steps away and actually I liked it was " just off the beaten path". The room was immaculate, great condition, fresh towels everyday. They offer towels to take to the beach, and provide unique soaps, shampoo and best aloe I've ever used in my life! And the view....awesome! The food in restaurant was excellent. They offer 50% breakfast for their guests and 10% off of lunch and dinners. Read in previous post they had best hamburgers...(I thought...seriously? A hamburger in Mexico??), but we had one as a late night snack and holy cow!! They were so good! I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a boutique style, warm and friendly, perfectly located place to vacation! When we return to Playa, we will absolutely stay at Hotel Cielo! Gracias por todo, Hotel Cielo!

Thank you Lynneeloo for taking the time to write your review

We really appreciate the kind words & we are delighted that we were able to help create a great vacation experience for you & your family

And yes ....thats right, our restaurant Carboncitos, now serves the Best Burger in Playa.

I was tired of eating terrible burgers so I started cooking them for myself in the kitchen....it was then I decided to let Playa know what a great Burger should be like.

I originally did for the locals longing for a great Hamburger but we had an overwhelming response from tourists as well, thanks for noticing what a Burger should be like :) & glad you enjoyed it.

Thank you for the recommendations

Stayed here 3 nights before moving to an all inclusive. Boy were we wrong. We didn't want to leave Hotel Cielo!
Rooms were impeccably cleaned every day, hotel staff was excellent, restaurant down stairs is
amazing and by far the best dinner in town.
We had such a nice time. Can't wait to head south again. We will absolutely stay here again.

I just wanted to post this to thank them for their help. We have stayed there before and have always felt welcome. This time I asked for a favor to pickup a special tequila that my wife likes from a local restaurant that would be closed while we were in Playa. They came thru in a big way and had it waiting for us. A big thanks to Miguel and staff for their help. It could not have been a better stay. Gracias

Very friendly reception at this hotel and we really enjoyed our stay. The location is very central to a lot of important things in Playa - public beach, bus station, ferry, etc... However, bear in mind this area is extremely touristy. If you're looking for quieter, more peaceful beach experience, you'll want to look at least a few blocks north (probably a mile) which is where we ate most of our meals. We definitely liked where we were though for the vicinity to public transportation.

The hotel itself is very basic - the only amenities were shampoo, soap and aloe which were all local and nice. However, no hair dryer, iron, etc.... Air conditioning was present, but being that it isn't built in, it never got too cool.

The biggest disappointment was the "roof terrace" pictured in the gallery on the site and on trip advisor. This was closed or under construction while we were there so we didn't get to enjoy it. Part of the reason we booked was for the scenic views pictured from the roof - and we couldn't get those.

That being said, the decor was cute and very authentic looking. We had a nice view overlooking the water and the markets below. We thought the bed was rather comfortable and the balcony was a nice place to sit and relax.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you're looking for a luxurious stay, however, it was great for travelers looking for a decent hotel and a good price with a great location.

Room Tip: We liked our room (21) that had a view of the ocean. There were quite a few stairs with no elevators...

Hi Anngie , thank you for taking the time to write your review

Although it is not a review we like, we do try learn from it & see where we can improve.

We at Hotel Cielo are concerned & I would like to take a moment to address your comments

Please understand, we never claim to be a luxury hotel, we pride ourselves on our warmth & charm, not the latest or trendiest fad, swim up bars or a gym.

What we provide is a traditional Mexican Hacienda style Boutique hotel, with amenities that are suitable for any vacationer , well..... with exception of course the Luxury traveler

I have provided a list below:

Air Conditioning
Pillow top Mattresses of excellent quality
Free WiFi
Free cold drinking water on every floor
Cable TV with 32"LED tvs
Complimentary Beach Towels
All natural / biodegradable soap & shampoo
All natural aloe gel for after sun
800 gram Bath towels
Small in-room Safe
300 thread count linens
50% off entire breakfast menu & 10% off lunch & dinner at Carboncitos
Our breath taking roof top (our apologies, it was closed for up dating )
Hair dryers & Irons are available upon request
24 Hour Reception

We are also a 3 - 3 & 1/2 Star hotel, not a 4 or 5 Star hotel

Hotel Cielo offers excellent quality, with affordable prices, we try to provide 5 star service & create a home like atmosphere for all our guests...this is what we strive for.

I will definitely look into the air conditioner issue, all our A/Cs are about a year old but sometimes the freon runs low with high use in this heat, we just wish you would of told us while you were here so you weren't inconvenienced, it could of been fixed in 5 minutes but thank you for bringing this to our attention, we appreciate it.

We feel Hotel Cielo is above basic, we are a very good hotel & many other reviewers agree, and is the reason we are a top contender here in Playa, we are truly sorry you felt differently

We really do care, we are always trying to improve & we just want our guests to truly enjoy their selves

Anngie, we know there are many hotels in Playa del Carmen, so thank you for choosing Hotel Cielo & we look forward to seeing you when you return to the beautiful Mayan Riviera

A friend and I stayed for 3 nights over a weekend in May. The location was great for our short last minute trip. I won't recommend staying for a week. It has the basics, no frills (no pool or gym)but clean and well kept. Something to note about Ave 5 in La Playa is that it's all walking street no motor vechicles, which was cool.

Pros:
- Location - very short walk from the ADA bus terminal which we took from Cancun airport. There was a park near the bus terminal too where locals and tourists can hang out and enjoy mexican snacks from the street vendors.
- You can see the beach from the 4th st walkway from the front desk.
- the beach is just 2 blocks and the sand on this side is much cleaner and the water level is just right
- You are very close to Ave 5, where all the bar, restaurants, stores are. But this is one end of Ave 5 its not central to all the boozy or crowded tourist action if you are looking for that. We enjoyed it even if it was walk a bit to get to Mamacitas.
- AC works great
- Awesome helpful staff. Edgar was very helpful is telling us how to get to a local restaurant and mapped it for us.
- Decently priced
- One of the reviews mention the beds were lumpy. but I found it rather comfortable and i slept well

Cons:
-No breakfast but the restaurant next door has discounted rates with the hotel
-no scenic views from the rooms. You will need to use the curtains to shut out street lights from coming into the room at night as well as the hallway lights or you can just turn the hallway lights off.
-Rooms are dimly lit and not well laid out or just small. in our room, the mirror was behind the flat screen tv. Every room is laid out differently and came in different sizes.

I'd recommend this place for a short trip. If you are not looking for luxurious amentities, there are plenty of other hotels too that may provide the same or better.

I would not call this no frills, we even have a repeat guest who is an actress with many awards under her belt, she is also an Academy Award, Tony, & Golden Globe winner...... If Cielo were no frills hotel, I am sure she would not be staying with us or return

We are also a 3 - 3 & 1/2 Star hotel, not a 4 or 5 Star hotel

Hotel Cielo offers excellent quality, with affordable prices, we try to provide 5 star service & create a home like atmosphere for all our guests...this is what we strive for.

I will definitely look into the mirror & lighting issue, possibly the bulbs may have been mixed up, thanks for bringing this to our attention, we appreciate it.

As for the breakfast, we chose to offer our guests a 50% discount for a great breakfast , instead of giving a free cup of coffee, fruit & a piece of bread.....we have had an overwhelming response from this & our guests love it, we are sorry that you felt this was a negative

We feel Hotel Cielo is above average, we are a very good hotel & many other reviewers agree, there really are not many options in our category, you say there are, but in actuality for our qualiyty & price point, there are only 6 or 7, the rest will definitey fall into the no frills catergory & this is the reason we are a top contener here in Playa

I hope you feel differently & maybe see us a in a different light, we really do care, we are always trying to improve & we just want our guests to be happy

I picked this hotel based off all the wonderful reviews this place had on trip advisor, and everything that everyone has said about this place is true. The rooms where clean, the showers had hot water, strong wifi, and the beds were so comfortable. All three gentlemen who were running the hotel desk were very pleasent, and if we ran into an issue, they were very accommodating and had an answer to every question. Even when it came down to recommendations on places to visit on the strip or which excursion to go on, they pointed us in the right direction. It's located not even a 5 minuet walk from the bus stop (which is cheaper to take from the airport than a taxi, and much more comfortable) and the beach is within view from the street. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, and not located next to a club, then this is the place for you. With that being said, if you just so happen to want to check out the club scene, its within walking distance. There is also a restaurant located on the floor level called Carboncitos which is very delightful, and they also give you a discount during breakfast for staying at Hotel Cielo. The only complaint I would have, if you would even consider it one, is that the roof top was closed for renovation, but I'm sure when they are done it will look as beautiful as the rest of the hotel does. I would definitely come back and stay here again. Thank you Hotel Cielo for making my first time visit to Playa Del Carmen so wonderful. Keep up the good work!!!!
