“Great Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

My husband and I stayed here 30th May - 11th June, the first few days we experienced hurricane Barbara, but the rest of our trip was amazing. Our room was very spacious and overlooked the court yard and was no extra charge. The food was fabulous and the Al La Carte Restaurants were excellent. The staff were very friendly and worked extremely hard to ensure the perfect stay. The beach is perfection with golden sands, clear waters and waiter service with ice cold drinks.
My only gripe, is the pool bar - would be happier if this was not in the main pool as some guests were in there all day drinking without bathroom breaks ! We both prefer the pool but tended to go to the sea more for this reason. We would and have recommended this hotel to family and friends.
There were also people who were upgraded for free from the closed while refurbished Yucatan - this was not a problem for us but some did lack the dress code at dinner ; ie short shorts and no collar or sleeves in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Register with Riu Class and present your card upon checkin and your room selection will be much bett...

We went to the Riu Palace Riviera Maya for our friends' wedding in October 2012. It was both my husband and I's first time staying at an all inclusive, and we enjoyed our time. There were plenty of activities, the food was pretty decent, and the beach was absolutely gorgeous. My only complaint would be that they watered down the drinks and they only had one choice when it came to beer, despite boasting a "selection" of brew on their website. Overall, it was a nice resort and a good bargain. The service was pretty good, the room was lovely. The hotel did have a strange odor which stayed in my suitcase for like 2 months, which is something I think they could afford to address. Overall it is something between "average" and "very good," I would say "good." I wouldn't not suggest this place. The wedding itself was absolutely WONDERFUL, the star of the show, and I would definitely recommend Riu Palace for weddings/civil unions/etc.

I loved this hotel! There was not one bad thing about it. From the minute you pull up and are greeted with towels and drinks, to the day you leave, you are treated like royalty. The staff cannot do enough for you at all times. The bartenders and servers are hilarious, funny, helpful, and speak English fairly well. There is entertainment every night in the outdoor area where there is a dance floor, large stage and a smaller stage. There is food available 24 hrs a day. The food is decent but what do you expect from an all inclusive? The beach is PERFECTION. Big, white sands with clear, clean water. There is a large section between the gigantic pools and the sand where there is hundreds of palm trees and lounge chairs if you want to relax out of the sun but still be out and about with everyone else. The best part for me, being a NY-er, every morning I was able to walk (5 mins and safe) to Starbucks in the little town. There was also some shopping there. Fifth avenue is a short cab ride away which has restaurants, boutique shopping ( I spent $150 on a dress! It's not cheap!) and another Starbucks. Beware of the coke dealers in the alley though. If you plan on buying an excursion trip to Cancun nightlife or a waterpark, you can meet the sales people in the lobby every morning at Riu. This was the best vacation I have ever had. Spa I didnt visit but the gym was good.

Having been upgraded from the riu Mexico for our honeymoon we found the hotel to be superb. The staff were fantastic especially Lester(our favourite bar waiter-never an empty glass. As for the animation team..Ricky,Rafa,Rudy,Angie,Julie,Hector,Diago and David made our holiday..so so funny! The food was amazing with so much choice(never a dicky tummy). The hotel is like a palace with plenty of traditional features unlike the Mexico which we found to be too contemporay. The sea was beautiful with golden sand and clear turquoise water.we found the trips a bit expensive averaging £100 each,we did do Xplor which was well worth it for adrenaline junkies. The only downfall was having 3000 peso stolen from our safe...having complained was told by security it was impossible but watch your safe when it spells 'closed' wait a couple of seconds and your code appears I.e Don't use your safe with staff in the room,we were told by rep to go to police station on our last day and report it and claim off our insurance! As for tipping the average wage there is approx £75 a month so they do rely on tipping, however they treat you well if you do or don't(a staff member had a 3000peso tip from me.We met some great people but please don't go in the sports bar and start on the shots..you made lose the next day!APart from the theft we can recommend this hotel but sadly we will not be holidaying with RIu anymore on principle.

Travelled out from East Midlands via Thomson in May and had two lovely weeks at the hotel with gorgeous weather everyday bar one, when it rained.

The hotel on arrival for us was jaw dropping on entering the reception area, how classy it looked and the reception could not be more helpful.

Bedrooms, Junior Suite, was large with separate lower seating area, large bed (2 singles together), plenty of cupboard space and large twin sinked bathroom. Balcony was on the small side but did have 2 chairs and small table located. View not to write home about looks like Thomson clients do not get courtyard views and no sea-views form any room. Well maintained by cleaning staff mini bar stocked up everyday along with all toiletries.

Bar: Main bar adjacent to reception area was large light and ideal for cooling off after a long day with any drink that you could imagine. The sports bar had pool tables, air hockey, plenty of tv,s and food that you could help yourself to. Beach bar was ideally placed between pool and beach again serving all drinks that are imaginable. Worth asking staff to make up their favourite cocktails, well worth the experience.

Dining: Main restaurant buffet style is large but not noisy well staffed and very clean, beach restaurant is open air and a gained staff are friendly and helpful. A La Carte eating in any of the five restaurants is well worth the effort of booking especially our favourite the Krystal, went twice and second time was better than first.

Food: excellent choice and can not fault any of it, have seen previous reviews who said food was not up to much but please if you can not find something to eat here you taste buds are not working correctly.

Location: right on the beach and about 20 minute walk to the shops and night life of Playa Del Carmen. The beach whilst soft sand was not necessary kept spotless and some of the sunbeds could do with being renewed but have sen worse. Pool can be noisy so if want quiet need to stay on the beach and hope entertainment staff stay away from your area.

Entertainment: Different show every night which was well rehearsed and the team tried their best. Local acts also brought in like Tijuana band and acrobats. The room used was large however we sat outside and enjoyed the shows from the open air. During the day busy entertainment programme in place.

Staff: Very friendly and could not do enough for you. Would say that 75% of guests were American who tipped a lot, staff did not favour them because of that which is nice to see.

Trips: Did not do any as could not drag our selfs away from this lovely hotel.

Overall well worth 11 hours of flying to stop here, would highly recommend this hotel and which is unusual for us yes we would return. Thank you Riu for looking after us.

Room Tip: Ask for courtyard view.

We are not big fans of all-inclusive resorts. We stayed in one about 25 years ago and have avoided them ever since. We were at the RIU Palace for the wedding of our nephew. The wedding was wonderful. The most pleasant surprise, however, was the resort. This is a great hotel with a wonderful staff. The overall quality of the operation is very impressive - and we have stayed in many hotels (at all price points) around the world. The rooms (we had a suite) are reasonably large with a seating area to watch TV and a balcony. The food was actually quite good considering the fact that the hotel has to feed more than 500 people every day. The best breakfast items for me were the cooked- to- order eggs and the pancakes. For dinner the best item was the rib-eye steak. Overall, it was a great 4 days, and we are seriously considering returning.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 3rd floor are quieter.

Here's a breakdown of my family's experience at the Riu in Playa del Carmen.

Dates: July 5 - 10

Weather: mid 80-90's everyday, rained at least once a day..never lasted more than an hour

Ocean: warm, clean, amazing....ocean temp was 84ish...best part of the trip

Beach: amazing! Clean sand, plenty of beach chairs, helpful staff that brought you drinks (tip them big towards the beginning of your stay and you'll get treated like royalty). Hammocks on the bech, plenty of palm tree shade if wanted. Close walk to restrooms, hotel room and snack area. Fun beach activities, water activities and beach vendors selling trinkets, cigars, hats and other things.
Best beach I've been to while staying at a resort...really is breathtaking and amazing.

Pool: 10-15 degrees hotter then the beach, very crowded (get there early to reserve a spot). Noisy but plenty of entertainment. Pool is kept clean and is very warm. My feeling was..I'm in Mexico, why would I want to stay by the pool all day when there is an epic beach just 100 yards away..but this is a nice pool for the person that prefers it.

Food: good but I've had better at other all-inclusives. The steak and Japanese restaurants were awesome but you have to get reservations early..they fill up quick. Buffett always had a nice variety and was tasty but by the 5th day we were burned out on it. I'd probably stear clear of eating extra fresh fruit and veggies..one of our friends was with us got very sick and she had been chomping down on the fresh fruit and veggies for 3 days ( everyone else in our party avoided them and we didn't get sick at all). Overall I'd rate the food a 6.5-7 out of 10...not the best but not bad either.

Drinks: tip your bartender, converse with them a bit and you'll get a great drink and friendly service. The lobby bar was amazing and was always empty! Highly recommended...the bartenders make great drinks and were fun to talk with. Pool and beach drinks seemed a biit watered down.

Rooms: clean but average. Don't expect the Ritz..but hey, it Mexico .. You shouldn't be in your room anyway!

Staff: overall very friendly...remember people, this is their home land..not ours... We are visiting them... If you treat these people nicely they will be overly nice in return. It sickens me how some of the guests treated the staff like they were their servants....they are hard working people who make such little money...treat them nicely and your trip will be enhanced..I could see the difference.

Safety: not once did we feel unsafe. I had my 15 y/o daughter with us and there was never a problem..very very safe.

Tours: use YukkaTreks. We hired a private tour guide to take us to the Coba ruins and we climbed the pyramid...it was amazing and he was so informative. They took us to a cenote to swim in afterwards....Coba is the place to go if you want to see ruins...only one left you can climb. It's about a 65 minute drive from the Riu but was worth it

Overall: we had a blast, no regrets, no major complaints. The Riu is an average to slightly above average all-inclusive. Don't expect the Ritz and you'll be fine. The beach and ocean are amazing..the food is good..the country is beautiful. I wouldn't recommend it if your looking to host a wedding. My wife and I got married in the Dominican Republic and after this trip, we were glad we did. This is the place you go to for a nice vacation or family vacation. It's not party city but it's not the bingo hall....a great getaway for the price.
