We stayed at Riu Palace Riviera Maya from October 22, 2007 to October 28, 2007. After reading reviews obsessively for the past 6 months, we were both a bit apprehensive. I'm going to give a detailed review, as I know that was what helped me most as we were selecting our honeymoon spot and preparing for our much-needed vacation.
Our travel agent booked our trip through Apple Vacations. Upon arriving in Cancun, we were directed to a bus that would take us to our hotel. This took about 1.5 hours, as we had to drop off folks at about 6 other resorts along the way. Once we arrived at the Riu Palace, we were quite pleased with the appearance of the front of the resort and lobby area. The front desk staff person was very courteous - we had asked for a good room location or upgrade, and were given a room that faced the courtyard (very near the pool), yet had an ocean view. A bell hop brought our luggage to our room. As soon as he opened the door, we were absolutely overwhelmed by the intense musty smell. We had read about this in reviews, but the smell was worse than we had imagined it would be. We brought along some Glade gel room fresheners to set out, but they did not work. I'd suggest bringing Glade plug-ins or something more powerful. We opted to keep the patio door open nearly the entire time we were there, despite allowing the humidity to come in, because the musty smell was a lot worse with the a/c on. The humidity caused everything in the room (including the floor) to get damp (as in, sliding around on your flip-flops while walking across the room damp). Because the floor is tiled and there are glass tops on the furniture, the only places in the room for the moisture to settle is in the couch, rug, and bedding. The hotel cannot help the climate, though, and we *were* warned about the humidity problem through other Trip Advisor reviews.
We were very impressed with the hard-working and courteous employees of the hotel. Unlike other reviews, we did not get the impression that the courteousness was forced. Wait staff in the dining room and restaurants were incredibly attentive. We left tips at most meals - a small gesture to show appreciation for their service. I think it helped that the resort was not near capacity. We tried the Chili's Steak House the first night - the meal was pretty decent. We also tried the Mexican restaurant and Sir Oliver, the gourmet restaurant. Both were decent. Just a hint: if you were not a fan of the steak at the steak house, do not order the 'fillet' at the gourmet place, as it is the same cut. The stuffed chicken was great though!). The breakfast buffet in the main dining room was great - varied choices, hot food stations, etc. The lunch and dinner buffets seemed to be the same each night, but were still decent (especially for a buffet).
The pool area is great - we always had a choice of chairs because the resort was not that busy. Also, they have a significant amount of beach/sandy area for lounge chairs as well. If you wish to walk along the beach, you can just go down a few stairs. Not awkward or a pain at all. Immediately north of the resort, along the beach, is a place where you can rent jet skis. We paid $60 for 30 mins of "fun." The hubby enjoyed this much more than I did. The pool bar is enjoyable, and the bartenders are upbeat and cheerful. Just a note to request the premium liquor if you have a preference, otherwise they give you local.
We did 2 excursions while we were there - which we booked through the Apple rep. One was to Chichen Itza. We paid about $87 per person, and it included a 3.5 hour bus ride there (picking up folks at other resorts for about 1.5 of those hours), a guided tour of the ruins, lunch at a Mayan resort place -- including seeing a beautiful, 150 foot deep, sink hole, and the bus ride back. On the way back, the bus took us through some Mayan villages. It was a bit long, but they cannot help how far we are staying from the ruins...it was just a tough pill to swallow being stuck inside a bus for 7 hrs on a beautiful day. The other we did was much more enjoyable - Royal Garrafon. We paid just under $90 a person for this excursion and it was definitely worth it. We were taken by minivan to Cancun (without making other pick-ups! yes!), and then boarded a large ship. We had a full breakfast and beverages while they took us on a 40 min boat ride to the Isla del Mujres (sp?). From there, we had a good 5 hours to either swim with the dolphins (extra charge) or go straight to Garrafon for unlimited snorkeling, zip lining, kayaking, etc. Open bar and buffet all day. We also opted to get a ferry ride into the downtown area for some mojitos and shopping. The tour was just the right amount of time and we were very pleased.
Each night there is a show - we think it was put on by resort staff one night (off-Broadway show-esque), and they brought in a Michael Jackson impersonator another night, who was surprisingly good! We met a wonderful waiter there on our first night, and he subsequently brought a bottle of champagne to our room every night of our stay!
The mini-bar in the room was nice. A man came through daily to restock water, soda, etc. Once we ran out of rum and it took them quite a while to replenish it, but that was all. We tipped the turn-down service and house keeping every other day. We walked back to our room a few times while house keeping was there, and we could see that they did an intense cleaning of the room every day (except changing of the sheets - that didn't happen once during our stay). But they squeegied (sp?) the floors, dresser, every surface in the room. They also bring around fresh towels as part of the turn-down service.
The biggest let-down was (as other reviews noted) coming home and finding that every single article of clothing we had brought was literally damp from the humidity. As in, clothes did not get put in the dryer after the spin cycle of the wash type of damp. The musty smell was so overpowering that we had to wash everything twice to get the smell out (I'm still contemplating a third round of wash).
In all, there were many more positives than negatives. The staff works so hard to make sure your stay is enjoyable. Hope this review is helpful!
