“Changes aren't always for the best...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

Well, after our first stay at the Acanto (honeymoon 2007), we wanted to return to the same hotel in 2013. This time we brought 2 other couples with us. Based on the rave reviews of the hotel, they were excited to join us. In 2007, this hotel was the most romantic boutique hotel we had ever stayed in. The few rooms they had were perfect and the staff was so helpful. Now in 2013, all of Playa has expanded...including the Acanto. While we were not expecting the exact same experience, we figured the expansion would just be an updated version of the great floor plans and attention to detail the rooms had before...sadly, this is not so.

The staff is still very helpful and pleasant, but the attention to detail seems to have left behind. While the updated look of the rooms (artwork, furniture etc.) were a pleasant surprise, the bathrooms left something to be desired. Also, the beach club, restaurant and gym you are able to use are not on the premises. The rooftop also left something to be desired. I may be nitpicking here...but prior to the expansion, this was the perfect boutique hotel. I know change is inevitable, but I just wish they would have thought it out better.

I still think it is one of the nicer hotels in the area and I am in no way discouraging new comers to stay here. We are still having a great time and the hotel is clean and nicely decorated. For us, if we come back to Playa, we may look into another option for lodging.

Hi we were very happy to have you back at Acanto this month with your friends.

We are happy that you were able to enjoy the brand new property, rooms, and amenities that we offer. The full units all have kitchens, marble floors and bathrooms with organic soap and shampoo ,marble counters and Onyx sinks, central air, plasma tvs and much more, that the previous property did not have. While the hotel is now larger than it was we have tried very hard to keep the same charm and style while providing modern amenities and comforts.

Our common area roof top is enjoyed by all of our guests, with the jacuzzi and bbq and limitless views. Should you return to Acanto we suggest the penthouse unit so you will have your own private roof top

The beach club is just a block away ad mentioned on our website and gym across the street.

We are proud of our in house Spa Relaquation and hope that you were able to enjoy it

Please let us know what we could add to the rooms which would have made your stay a better experience.

We take all comments very seriously and always welcome feedback

Thank you and we hope to see you again.

Matt

My husband and I just stayed at the Acanto Hotel for our 2nd time. We enjoyed our stay just as much as our first visit or better. The weather this time of year is perfect. The Hotels location is perfect! Steps away from famous 5 th Avenue but yet it's quiet at the hotel. We enjoyed a quick walk to the beach daily too. The accommodations are wonderful, we had everything we needed and were so comfortable during our stay.
We took advantage of the hotels communication package this trip ( which was so great!) it was internet and calls to the states. Thanks again.....We will be back soon!

We couldn't have asked for a better location to fit all our wants for a great vacation. The boutique style condo/hotel sits just off 5th Avenue and within walking distance to just about everything you'd want to do while in PDC. We stayed in the studio penthouse which I had thought would have views of the city and water, but it doesn't. Nevertheless there are stairs leading to the rooftop where we had our own jacuzzi and deck area. The views of the Caribbean and Cozumel from there are more than spectacular.
Our room was very nice and the maid service did a great job of cleaning and not imposing on us. Karen at the front desk is very special and a great asset to the hotel.
The hotel, with its Spanish architecture, is very charming and the use of candles was a nice touch.
The hotel has a beach arrangement with Wicky's, which is couple of blocks away, but not an issue for us.
If being in a small boutique style hotel close to everything and you don't mind a little walking then the Acanto is a great option for you.

We have only one unit with ocean view from the room. It is a one bedroom penthouse however all the 1 and 2 bedroom penthouses have incredible views of the ocean, city and Cozumel

the beach is 1.5 blocks away and we have 3 beach clubs that we are affiliated with where we offer chairs and discounts

This is a lovely, comfortable and relaxed hotel. The staff is fun (You know who you are!) and very accomodating. We discovered that DVD's from the U.S. won't play on Mexican DVD Machines :(
The atmosphere lends to socializing with other quests. There are rooftop hot tubs and grills for use, and many areas to hang out. We were served tequila shots at the pool! It looks so pretty at night with candles and soft lighting. Smokers stand near the entrance, and it blows into the lobby an pool area. That was the only thing that could be improved upon.

Room Tip: You must walk up steps on one side of the property. If that is difficult, ask for a room on the side...

We rented the 1 bedroom master villa. It has a nice kitchen (not a lot of pots/pans to cook with, but sufficient and probably standard), spacious living room with a large dining room table, and a large master bedroom and bathroom. Everything is modern, clean, new, and comfortable. It feels like home for the time you're there. The roof-top jacuzzi and grills are very beautiful although we didn't end up using them much. The courtyard is very beautiful with nice beach chairs and a small pool which is great for a dip if you don't want to go down to the beach. Even though it is like a condo, the staff cleans your room each day which was really nice.

You're about a block from the beach and right on 5th Avenue which is fun to walk up and down with kids - lots of great restaurants nearby. If you're staying in Playa, this is a great location as you are central to everything. There are fisherman right on the beach that will sell you freshly caught fish at 10am in the morning which makes for great grilling from the roof top.

Matthew and Karen took good care of us and were always available and very responsive and helpful with whatever we needed. Karen at the front desk was great with our daughter who still asks about her now that we're back.

A few things to note - the Wireless in the rooms is not free. They are clear about that on the website, but I had read free Wi-fi and missed it was only in the lobby. It is very high quality - high speed and worked flawlessly the entire week we were there. It cost us $50USD for the week. I think if I had a choice of poor wifi and $50 for the week, I'd pay the $50, so I was happy with it.

The other thing is that with the one-bedroom we were in, there is a single hotel room on the end that connects by a locked door that I assume they use to turn it into a 2 bedroom unit if the same family is occupying both spaces. That door is fairly thin and we could hear our neighbors quite well (and they us) when we were in our living room. During our week long stay, there were probably 3 or 4 families that came through and used that room. Only one was up late at night to the point where it woke us up. I closed the door on the master bedroom and put some white noise on via my iPhone and we slept through the noise. Other than that it wasn't really an issue. I'm sure we could have asked to switch rooms, but it wasn't really a big deal.

We had a great stay and will stay there again next time!

Just to clarify regarding the wifi. For $50 We offer unlimited wifi and calls to USA and Canada for a week. it cost less for shorter stays. All the 1, 2 and 3 bedroom units have telephones for the calls to USA and Canada

We are also adding additional soundproofing to the connecting rooms and unless we are fully occupied do not put guests in connecting rooms. This allows all guests to have the most privacy

Acanto Boutique Hotel sits one block from the beach and steps away from the main shopping thoroughfare in Playa del Carmen. Our room was HUGE with an eat-in kitchen, wrapped terrace, giant king-sized bed and two flat screen TVs. The staff is super-friendly. Our side of the hotel is entirely new, as it was built around an existing structure that was recently renovated. The courtyard circles a plunge pool surrounded by chaise lounges. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone looking for more than just a hotel room, in Playa del Carmen.

Room Tip: Pick one on the 2nd or 3rd floor so you can enjoy the views from your balcony of the streets below!

I came down to Playa del Carmen with 2 other girl friends and we rented the 2 bedroom villa. The villa/apt was fantastic: modern, immaculate, very comfortable bed/pillows, kitchen, comfortable sofas, etc....I could not ask for more! The pictures of rooms/grounds you see on their website are very accurate. The hotel is new and we really enjoyed our stay here and will return.

We liked that the hotel is on a side street just off of 5th Avenue (shopping and restaurants) and yet it is still very peaceful. The beach is just down the street and very convenient.

I have seen some reviews that complain there is no restaurant/water. As there are many good restaurants in PdC this was not a concern for me...breakfast at 100% Natural (great fresh fruit and vegetable juice smoothies and many choices for traditional Mexican Breakfast/Lunch). Also, The Bakery or any little place right on the beach is wonderful. Ask reception for dinner recommendations or just walk around and take your pick.

WATER/SNACKS...there is a little pharmacy on 5th that sells water, cokes, chips, etc. As we had a full kitchen this was not a problem to stop by and stock up. Directions to the Rx. Exit hotel towards 5th Ave. Once on 5th take left and it is 2nd or 3rd shop on left hand side...next to Ice Cream Store.

Room Tip: The rooms on the inner courtyard are more quiet. We had the 2 bed villa so one room was on the stre...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Acanto Hotel is praised by the Media: Travel + Leisure Magazine says "Mexico's Riviera Maya is known for its sprawling resorts, but the new 21 units of 1,2 or 3 bedroom fully furnished accommodations at the Acanto Boutique Hotel is the best alternative to any mega resort. This hacienda-style property, one block from the beach and the area's pedestrian-filled la Quinta Avenida is set around a courtyard that's home to a swimming pool w chaise lounges and lanterns. Spanish accents influence the interiors, where curved windows frame views of the gardens. All guests enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi phone calls, daily continental breakfast, access to the beach, daily maid service, concierge service and discounts to many local area restaurants. Acanto also offers 1, 2 and 3 bedroom Penthouse units offering private roof top areas with Jacuzzi and BBQs with sweeping views of the Caribbean. Frommer's Travel Guide says"In my view, this property is the most romantic yet family friendly hotel in Playa del Carmen. There is intimacy and flair and even a sense of isolation. The stylish accommodations are endowed with color and texture, all encircling a swimming pool and softly lit courtyard that draw a division between this small enclave and the world outside the hotel's door. The accommodations are large and comfortable and all include full kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms. The location is great, just around the corner from La Quinta Avenida, on a secluded and quiet side street, surrounded by restaurants offering live music, great food and drinks. Acanto offers a Romantic yet family friendly atmosphere where our experienced staff will cater to your every need. All guests will enjoy our swimming pool and rooftop Jacuzzi & BBQ, marble floors and bathrooms, granite counter tops, central air conditioning, ceiling fans, flat screen TVs, telephones, terraces and so much more. All of our accommodations are energy efficient and ecologically friendly. We provide organic natural soaps and shampoo for all of our guests and are a smoke free facility.
