Booked through Travelocity; flight, transport from airport and hotel - all went smoothly. Having heard about construction noise and room allocation problems, I contacted T/Ocity, who in turn contacted RPR to request room away from construction - they were informed that request was noted (blah!). I personally e-mailed hotel (Marisol Andrade) to make same request and was informed I could up-grade for $40 per night to make sure...(I obviously was booked in lower category room). Because I needed to send CC details plus ID and signature, I informed Marisol that I'd wait till check-in to upgrade - she informed me that hotel was full and upgrade, even paying for it, might not be available. Checking in on Sat 2nd Dec, sure enough.....no upgrade available that night, but I was told to come back next morning at 10 after guests checked out (I went at 9). First room was 713 on second floor in construction building (Uxmal), almost at end of block, far from ocean (which you could see leaning out over balcony!). The room, though very nice, was lacking an important element....namely, air-conditioning! It didn't work and wasnt repaired until 6pm (we got room at 1pm) and then blew an icy blast over the bed and we weren't able to regulate it (I spent the night with my head under the covers..llolol). Plus, had to call housekeeping right away because the balcony furniture and hammock was covered in dust (obviously from construction on upper floor).
I have to say that I wasn't impressed with our welcome; no drink, hubby had to carry cases up the stairs, and the check-in clerk didn't give any orientation of the hotel or what to do - fortunately I'm a TA afficionado and had read all info)). Perhaps it was my fault because I didn't go to the "club" desk to get my "welcome" package (read.....timeshare trap). However, the bell-boy was more than informed and friendly and soon had us in our "hot" room.
To cut a long story short, the next day I managed, with the help of Cynthia at the front desk, to pay $40 a night extra and move to Room 352 in building Coba - top floor, big balcony, great view of pool and ocean (highly recommend this room - if you like two beds)). Nice furnishings, shower and toilet area separate from vanity area,(including magnifying mirror) with jacuzzi IN the room and a chaise lounge - plenty of space in the room. Mini-fridge well stocked and also bottles of booze (tequilla, rum, vodka and whisky).......all handily placed in cabinet beside the chaise lounge!))(Cabinet also holds the TV). TV has MANY channels, lots in English, though we hardly turned it on. Our housekeeper was very good and (with the help of tips)), brought extra towels etc and cleaned the room quite early in the day. We had turn-down service 3 nights....(wonder what happened the other 4 nights)). Robes and slippers were provided in the room.
My husband used the gym quite a few days (when it rained!) and said the equipment was good and the facility was modern.....except for the leaks in the roof and the buckets to catch the rain!!
Having read that the resort was turning adults only sometime in Nov., it was a surprise to find children there.....during our week, probably about a dozen, including babies, toddlers and 6-8 yrs old. Some people found it disturbing.......
The resort changed its beach towel distribution policy on Mon 4th Dec; you now get a towel card and have to use it to obtain a towel (you'll be charged if you lose the towel and can't produce the card). However, I asked the front desk for another card (3 in all for 2 of us) and was given one no problem and you could change the towels at any time.....thank goodness, because it rained so much and we were caught in it on the beach and the towels got soaked! Plenty of loungers on the beach - we don't use the pool, but appeared to have sufficient loungers there for guests too, and the resort was supposed to be full the week we were there. Lovely, white, soft sand. Some large rocks in water, but walk slightly to the left away from pier and almost no rocks; though, strong surf the week we were there (people surfing) and very windy. There's a "beach butler" who VERY occasionally comes round with bottles of cold water and cold towels...but his cart with sun-tan lotions and magazines is there for guests' use as required; plus, there is a "canoe" near the pool with bottles of water on ice. I didn't see waiter service on the beach, but that might have been due to the inclement weather a lot of the time. You can walk for a very long way north on the beach; also south, but just to the ferry pier (probably 20 mins stroll).
We did hear construction noise.....on the beach and on our balcony and we were at the other end of the resort from it....I think the music muffles it for those round the pool (you don't hear the music on the beach most of the time). However, it wasn't too bad for us, but I did hear complaints from many guests who were in that building ........they're SUPPOSED to have ALL done by Dec 22nd.......BUT.....there is construction on another project, not connected to RPR on the north side of the resort and they were occasionally pile-driving when we were there .....
Because of the weather, a lot of the planned activities didn't take place round the pool......this is where I feel the entertainment staff need to be more imaginative. They had a couple of things in the lobby, but most were cancelled. There were shows every night except Sunday and they were performed either in the lobby or in the theatre by a very talented troupe of dancers and lasted about 45 mins (from 9pm). Also, every night in the lobby bar area, a group played and sang and you could dance if you wanted to.(this finished about 11pm). There was also another musical entertainment group outside the buffet restaurant when it wasn't raining.
The food was quite good; buffet selection was small but nice both at breakfast and dinner (we lunched at Pelicanos by the beach - a la carte). However, the music played in ALL the dining options was (IMHO) awful! Not happy, holiday (or even romantic), but like a funeral dirge...ugh! I did try and gently suggest a change...but was informed that was all they had! We had dinner in Maria Maries a few times - once was wonderful and the next night the same meal was bad....we heard this comment from others; seems to be not much consistency. I have to say that the service in all dining options we tried, leaves a bit to be desired for a "luxury" resort......they're very friendly and quick to clear plates but not to check on refills or ask if all is ok (and we tip all the time). Drinks were fine and you got better liquor if you asked for it...otherwise, well drinks. Plus, the barmen were willing to make drinks to your specifications))
We needed a late check-out (5pm) and paid $50 to keep a room (though we had to move to another room for the afternoon). Normal check-out is at 12pm. They do have a hospitality room, but seemingly you are allocated 30 mins to shower etc. We preferred to pay.........
I realize this is a long review, but know that there are lots of you needing information on this resort and hope that this has been helpful. My husband and I (we're in our 50s) enjoyed ourselves despite the less than perfect weather! (we've been to Playa area 3 times in last 4 years at this time of year plus another 7,8 times in May and August and never experienced bad weather before) and met nice, friendly people. The hotel was very nice and we would consider staying here again.
