“No Shower No Privacy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

We were very excited to book the romantic tress house for our vacation. But when we arrived, we wished someone would have told us some of the not-so-romantic details of the hotel. Here is a list of objective features/observations of the hotel, you use your own judgment.

1. Frequent water loss. Our shower ran out of water completely 2 times in 4 nights 3 days and hot water 1 time.
2. No privacy. One room has no door. The second bedroom and the bath room have wicker doors. That means whatever you do in the bedroom or bathroom can be heard by anyone in the house—or seen.
3. No easy access to public beach. The hotel is 5 min walk from the beach. But it's a private beach that belongs to another hotel. We walked about 40 min north to a public beach. I think you can also walk south to another public beach but I don't know how far.
4. No phone to call for help, even If you loss water in the middle of a shower. That means you have to have someone in the house every time when you take a shower. And since there is no wifi or tv in the room, you probably should prepare something else to do when waiting.
5. Safety concern. The windows can't be locked from the inside. We didn’t have anyone breaking in but when I went to bed at night, it’s in the back of my mind.
6. Poor sound insulation The roof of the house is made out of hay. It’s romantic but also means you can hear constructions & dog barking at 4:00 AM.
7. No two way lock for the front door. You can either lock the door from the inside by a deadbolt or outside by a lock. That means all people stay in the house need to come and go at the same time.--Or if someone comes back late he/she needs to wake up someone inside to open the door.
8. Persisting problems, no action from the management. The owner knows the water problem but had no intention to fix it. When I told him the first time I lost water at 1:00AM, he didn’t act surprised or apologetic. It obviously happened before but he has no intention to fix it.
9. Lying owner. When we discovered there was no wifi in the house, the owner told me “the cable company just changed the service today. I will buy something tomorrow to fix it”. But later the manager told us there was never wifi in the house. And will not be.
10. Great manager. The manager Omar is very helpful and professional. He tried all he could to help us with problems we have encountered. Unfortunately the owner explicitly expressed that he doesn't care about the problems we had and Omar couldn't do much to make up for it.

Room Tip: Our room had shower, lock and privacy problems, I'm not sure whether it is for all rooms or just...

Close to everything you need, 5 min to the beach and 5-10min to the main shopping street, but far enough to be hidden away and quiet. Rooms are very unique with outdoor showers and little touches to make your stay more personal. Super friendly owners who were very helpful with all our questions. Would stay here again.

This is not your traditional hotel!! It's seems to be beautiful at first but when you are shown your room it's a completely different story. The shower doesn't work, we stayed here 2 nights without a shower!! The tub/bathroom is badly kept and unclean. Be ware of stray dogs! Also learn to love spiders and mosquitos in your room. The noise from the bars/clubs and restaurants go on all night! Not a bad location. Plenty of restaurants to walk to eat. Far from the main attractions but free wifi! Hopefully they fix the bathrooms soon.

Room Tip: Don't expect much for your money! No A/C and no heating.

It was our anniversary so it was a special trip for us. We made our reservation in booking.com, we were not sure which hotel to choose.. many options, but we thought that a property with more caribbean ambience not just one more concrete building would be great. Well.. we found Shalala! an awesome hotel right in the center of restaurants and bars, great location!. I love Tulum and this was definitely a great spot to stay in Playa del Carmen within a natural ambience and feel apart to relax, but near all the best of the city.
Staff very friendly and helped us arranging our tours for very reasonable prices and excellent vehicles .
We really liked that the other rooms were located in independent buildings apart from ours. the beach was 2 minutes walking down the road, we spent lot of time there. There is no place like this natural paradise in Playa; you should definitely stay here.

Love writting this review! If you are a COUPLE or a FAMILY looking to get out of the crazy impersonal resort feel of the area.. this is your special venue also with a pool. The grounds are well kept (even after a storm) the misquitoes are also well attended too and you will have such a great expeirence feeling cared for that your happiness and needs are just par for the course for the property owners. This is a small comfortable property. We are a couple from San Diego Ca. and we are used to hospitality being over done that we serious wish this at home, beautifuly remodeled and perfectly situated within walking distance of fantastic food and the beach was here so our friends and family could experience it. We would take anyone there and will stay again!! So Gracias Shalala (Merci). Stay here stay here stay here!! We hardly ever left.

Room Tip: They have balconies on all rooms, and if you want just a room there is a smaller Cabana. Families th...
