My name is MacKenzie. I am 24 years old and from the United States. This was my third visit to Playa del Carmen and my second visit to the LunaBlue Hotel. I came to Playa del Carmen to model swimwear, with my photographer Ken and another model, and we will be returning to the LunaBlue for the rest of our stays in Playa del Carmen because we had an incredible experience due to the very hospitable, accommodating, friendly and honest staff. We stayed 8 nights at the LunaBlue and it was wonderful. In fact, it was such a positive experience that having read the negative reviews I am deeply offended and insulted at some of the things people have said, primarily because I know they aren't telling the truth.
The staff was like a second family for me during my time here, starting with the owners, Tony and Cheri Head. They went above and beyond in accommodating us and making sure we had the best possible experience at their hotel as well as in Mexico. They gave us some great ideas for photoshoot locations, places to eat, and neat beaches and places to see that weren't too crowded or touristy. Tony actually took time out of his busy schedule to accompany us in one day and show us the area. We had our own personal tour guide!
We were also very impressed with the employees at the LunaBlue hotel, who we got to know pretty well throughout the week.
Jorge, the bartender, has a great sense of humor and he makes a delicious piña colada, but be sure to try the "sarita b. careful" and "sex on the bar" drinks as well. The swings at the bar are a lot of fun! -especially if you have a mild case of A.D.D like me! :)
Everyone at the front desk - Jaime, Alex, Mario - they are all very warm, friendly, and honest. They were very helpful whenever we had any questions and came to our door to let us know when we had messages. Even the maids, Gloria and Areli are very sweet and always smiling!
The hotel was also incredibly clean. Everything, from the pool, to the garden, to the hotel rooms is very clean and well maintained. It was always nice to open the door to my room to a very fresh, clean smell and to discover towel art on my bed!
I thought the mattresses were firm, but comfortable. I have problems with my hips sometimes, but I did not fall asleep, nor wake up in any pain.
I thought the rooms were nicely decorated and I liked the fact that there was a dresser with plenty of room for all of our clothes, a book shelf/shelves in the bathroom for all or my make up/hair and skin products. I loved the kitchen! We went to the grocery store and got a few items for sandwiches and smoothies. We made smoothies every morning and had tea or coffee and locally made chocolate or orange sweet bread from the lobby in the morning, which was great for breakfast. We made sandwiches for when we were out at the beach, and we even used the stove to heat up some delicious leftovers! I also liked that we had a full length mirror in the room.
The air conditioning was wonderful. They give you a little remote when you check in so you can control it from your bed, which is nice.
The rooms don't have TVs, which in my opinion is great! If you're on vacation you should be out exploring the area anyway. And if you're going to be in the hotel room, catch up on your reading! They have a lending area in the reception area if you need a book. Or, use the wifi!
I stayed in room 5, on the second floor next to the street. The wireless Internet worked great for myself and the other model who was sharing the room with me. She had a laptop and I was on my iPhone. We both had great Internet access. Our photographer stayed in room six, and his Internet wasn't as strong, but it still worked fine. He preferred to use it right outside of his room because the weather was beautiful and it overlooked the garden.
Oh and as far as the mosquitoes go, you will get them in any tropical location, but I didn't really have much of a problem with them - just a few bites here and there, which was to be expected. Even paradise has it's challenges :)
Being in room 5, near the street I found it to be actually pretty quiet. You don't get a lot of traffic passing through the street, mainly just people walking by. The only noise you'll hear is live music coming from the bar on Wednesday and Friday nights, but it's very nice to listen to and ends promptly at 11 so everyone can get some sleep.
Overall, I love this hotel. I love the people that run it and who work here, and there's something so peaceful about it. There is a lovely garden, beautiful artwork, swings at the bar, a water feature, and the new pool is my favorite addition! I have seen baby frogs, a couple of small lizards and geckos, and the hotel is also home to a few cats the owners have rescued who are very friendly :)
Ignore any and all of the negative reviews, because I have read all of them, and none of them have been anywhere near my experience, and some are complete crap that people made up because they were upset about something unrelated or was made up to benefit other, competing hotels. If you need anything, just ask! You will be surprised at just how helpful everyone really is! Happy travels everyone! You will love Playa del Carmen and this hotel! Maybe I'll see you at the LunaBlue during my next stay!
