Just returned from a 10 day wonderful vacation at Secrets Capri. The resort is definitely for couples, so I would not recommend it to singles. The place and the staff were just amazing. Our favorite restaurant for dinner was Portofino, although we were very happy with all of the food at the resort. The live music at Portofino was wonderful. We went to the buffet for breakfast and ordered room service a couple of mornings - yumm. Lunches we did either at the beach, the Seaside Grill or just snacked on finger sandwiches and other snack foods at the lobby bar (they roll them out at 4 pm every afternoon). Of course, we really enjoyed our "magic fridge" which kept refilling itself every day with water and Coronitas (cute baby size Coronas). :-)) We miss it!!!
Everyone at the resort is so happy and smiley. As the other reviews said, same great service is given regardless of tips, but we felt like we just had to tip for the service we got, so I would definitely bring lots of singles. The front desk will change the $$ for you though, if you run out (US or pesos, as you wish).
We stayed in room 220, which was on the south side and "tropical view". At check in we were asked if we wanted to upgrade to an ocean and pool view room for $75/night (this appears to be standard, based on our discussions with other couples there). Since we were staying 10 nights, we figured that $750 would be better spent on massages and other things, so we stayed with "tropical". Our room was the very first one on the side of the building, so we had ocean, beach and jungle view. It was really private and we were very happy with it. I would say - see your room first before you decide to upgrade.
Since we were one of the few couples there not on their honeymoon, anniversary (or married at all), we did not get towel art on our bed, which was totally fine and I am sure if we asked we would have gotten it. :-) We did get rose pettals one day and a huge lilly flower arrangement the other, which were just a couple of extra touches that the hotel did that made the stay really special.
One night we saw that the hammock area on the beach (by the way, they do remove the hammocks for the night) was lit up blue and the little gazebo area where they had massage tables set up for the beach massages was lit up red. They had put up sheets around them, set up a walkway on the beach with candles from the pool area leading to the water and had tikki torches right by the water. They also had a DJ spinning some music and had wine and champaigne available - it was a full moon and so the beach was set up for star and moon gazing. They also set up individual sitting/laying areas with sheets and huge white pillows on the sand around the beach for couples to lay down, sip wine/champaigne and star gaze... :-)))
We took out the kayaks and went snorkeling. My boyfriend did scuba lesson and diving as well and really enjoyed it, so he went again the next day and the instructor guys were so happy he liked it, they gave him a discount. I got the impression that all of the entertainment staff were just so happy if guests did anything (as opposed to drink at the pool bar all day everyday), but there was no pressure to - you could just sit at the pool bar, or in the pool or on the beach, which we did for the first day or two. :-) Jorge (diving and snorkeling guide), Jaime (scuba instructor) and Martin (the boat captain) were awesome - when my boyfriend went scuba, I went on the boat with him and they would just give me snorkeling gear - the reef is right in front of hte hotel, so it was nice.
The beach was OK - it does not even compare to Playa or Tulum. We also found that the beach was MUCH nicer if you walk ed south just about 10 minutes, which we did a couple of times (Maya koba, which is being built there will have a very nice beach).
The Mexican show at the hotel was very nice and the dancers were great. We took a picture with Pancho the donkey. :-))There were also two guitar guys at the Desires I believe on a Th or a Fri night - classic rock cover - they were great!
There is really nothing negative to say about the hotel. The toilet being sort of in the open - you can get over it, plus they give you incents to burn if you wish and you can turn the TV up loud or go on a balcony or whatever. Not a big deal at all.
One thing - watch out for the crazy wave runners. Even though the swimming area is roped off at the beach, one went right through it and almost ran over a couple. Pretty scary!
We did Tulum Extreme tour - highly highly recommend it. Zip lines, rapelling into the Cenotes/caves, snorkelling, the Tulum ruins and the beach - all for about $90. You can also buy a CD with the pictures that they take of you during the trip, I think for $20. You leave at 8 am and are back to the hotel at 4 pm. It was so much fun!!! The beaches in Tulum are AMAZING!
After the Extreme adventure, we had beach massages and they were very nice. I had a mani/pedi the first night and Margarita did a fantastic job. The spa is very nice. The gym was nice as well.
Trip to Playa was fun. We took a cab there and back ($12 each way). The hotel had a free bus or van, but you had to sign up in advance and it was on a strict time table (leave at 6, pick up at 10 or something like that). The cabbies also gave us good restaurant suggestions: the spelling is not right, but the good Mayan food restaurant Yal Cha? is on 8th st between 5th and 10th. If you go, ask for a table in their courtyard.
We also went to Tulum and had lunch at this small local restaurant right on the beach (I wish I remembered the name of it - turn left towards the beaches at the first intersection in Tulum, then turn left to go North, it will be one of the last beach access stops before you hit the ruins from the back entrance). They had an amazing mixed shrimp/fish ceviche and the chef's specialty marinated garlic/veggie platter. If you see Le Mezzanine restaurant/bar/hotel, stop in - we did not eat there, but it is worth it just to check out - it is a 4 room hotel right on the beach, with a swanky bar/restaurant attached.
We would stay at Secrets Capri again and would recommend it to anyone without any reservations! The area overall is simply amazing and the people are great!
