Playa Maya is the perfect hotel right on the beach of Playa del Carmen. If you are trying to stay away from the mega resorts and want a small hotel, this is the place to be. The room is a good size(we stayed in superior balcony room) with comfortable bed(most are harder in Mexico), closet, drawers, refrigerator & TV with cable & a.c. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food is very good in the restaurant. I kept hearing how good the coconut shrimp was, and everyone was right, they were delicious! The hotel is a short walk to where all the action is on 5th Avenue, but far enough away so its quite at night. I would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again. Thanks Steve!

Hotel has only beach entrance about 50 ft walk from street. Very clean large room king size bed flat panel tv. Breakfast included in rate when we were there. Free internet access, free bottled water.
Lunch at hotel restaurant very good. Beach level no drop to water no rocks in water. Pool 4 ft deep great if u have small kids or do not want ocean. No elevator but hotel is only 3 flights up. Would stay again.

We like the smaller hotels that have a more personal feel. We also prefer a beachside setting. We got both with Playa-Maya. We found via the net, used TripAdvisor to get the scoop, and booked direct. All worked out great. Small hotel directly on beach with beach-only access. Right next to the Alhambra Hotel and 6th Street, a block from the main 5th Avenue shopping. Hotel maticulously maintained, owners very attentive, and staff very friendly and helpful. Stayed a full two weeks and enjoyed every minute. Pay a little extra for the ocean view rooms: look out directly at ocean and Cozumel. Garden Jacuzzi Rooms nice, and garden very picturesque, but note that rooms are a bit dark due to garden palapa. Nothing but the highest regards for this hotel and would recommend highly. If you're into the smaller hotel setting without the mega-resort services and amenities this is the place to stay.

My daughters planned this vacation for my 60th birthday and it was wonderful. The internet pictures of the hotel were exactly the way it was in person, our room was clean, comfortable and with a wonderful view of the ocean. We had a terrace with a hammock and even though the air conditioner was on all the time, I was able to sleep really well because it was so quite. The wait staff was attentive not only during our meals, also when spending time on the beach, helping with lounge chairs, umbrellas, drinks and food. We had the best beach by far with very little damage from last year's hurricanes. When we walked to the north of our hotel, there were mega hotels with less beach area than we had and they were loaded with sun bathers. I loved our hotel, the beach and especially the great people we met there. I almost forgot, my daughter, Joslyn, treated me to a massage on the beach and it was the best I've ever had. A wonderful gentlemen gently worked my tired muscles, while I listened to the peaceful sounds of the ocean accompanied by beautiful Mexican music.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Adios,

Lee

  • Tips/Secrets: — Be willing to explore other areas. We rented a car and paid extra for insurance with no deductible. It was worth it because we had a fender bender immediately and we were completely covered. Also, ask to see the rental agreement in English.

We enjoyed our 2nd stay at Playa Maya earlier this month, booked directly through Steve at the hotel with ease after having our travel agent recommend the hotel to us for a stay this past March. Good thing she did, too, because we were so pleased to have found such a nice, welcoming, more upscale property on the beach in Playa (though our stay off the beach at La Tortuga 2-3 years ago was also quite good). In fact we have already begun emailing Steve about a possible return next spring.

Really surprising before writing this to read back through some of the more recent reviews here. You do really have to wonder who is writing some of them, particularly the one a few down that asks the same question in the title. I'd start with that one, though, as guess what: there was no gym at the hotel for either of our first two stays. Guess Steve & co must have put one in for that family and then took it back out again, huh?!? We stood in what they told us USED to be a gym before the hurricanes, a nice little room with AC, sofa and chairs, and (most importantly for us) a PC with free Internet access. That was great for staying in touch with things back home on both stays.

For us the staff at reception (Pedro, Anna and Maitay) were all very helpful, especially with restaurant recommendations and special requests (wife always wants extra pillows). We were served mostly by Joaquin at the beach, also excellent. They set out the beach chairs for us every morning. Breakfast was clear: an announcement right on the menu tells you that you get any of their breakfast combinations free. I stuck with those and they were plenty but my wife was happy to order eggs benedict and pay extra. Reception staff also reminded us about the included breakfast when they showed us to the room (maybe people aren't listening to everything then?).

We had a jacuzzi room with a garden and liked the additional space. Figure you're on the beach every day so don't need the ocean view. Lots of channels in English, too. We did have a problem with hot water being out one day, but just reported it to the desk and waited until after breakfast to shower, and it was fine.

My advice is to remember that there are a lot of crazies out there, and it looks like some of them have found Trip advisor, judging by some of those comments. We loved Playa Maya and will return for a 3rd stay when we can!
