We enjoyed our 2nd stay at Playa Maya earlier this month, booked directly through Steve at the hotel with ease after having our travel agent recommend the hotel to us for a stay this past March. Good thing she did, too, because we were so pleased to have found such a nice, welcoming, more upscale property on the beach in Playa (though our stay off the beach at La Tortuga 2-3 years ago was also quite good). In fact we have already begun emailing Steve about a possible return next spring.
Really surprising before writing this to read back through some of the more recent reviews here. You do really have to wonder who is writing some of them, particularly the one a few down that asks the same question in the title. I'd start with that one, though, as guess what: there was no gym at the hotel for either of our first two stays. Guess Steve & co must have put one in for that family and then took it back out again, huh?!? We stood in what they told us USED to be a gym before the hurricanes, a nice little room with AC, sofa and chairs, and (most importantly for us) a PC with free Internet access. That was great for staying in touch with things back home on both stays.
For us the staff at reception (Pedro, Anna and Maitay) were all very helpful, especially with restaurant recommendations and special requests (wife always wants extra pillows). We were served mostly by Joaquin at the beach, also excellent. They set out the beach chairs for us every morning. Breakfast was clear: an announcement right on the menu tells you that you get any of their breakfast combinations free. I stuck with those and they were plenty but my wife was happy to order eggs benedict and pay extra. Reception staff also reminded us about the included breakfast when they showed us to the room (maybe people aren't listening to everything then?).
We had a jacuzzi room with a garden and liked the additional space. Figure you're on the beach every day so don't need the ocean view. Lots of channels in English, too. We did have a problem with hot water being out one day, but just reported it to the desk and waited until after breakfast to shower, and it was fine.
My advice is to remember that there are a lot of crazies out there, and it looks like some of them have found Trip advisor, judging by some of those comments. We loved Playa Maya and will return for a 3rd stay when we can!
