“Great alternative to renting a condo.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We just recently departed a week long stay at Playa Maya. We didn’t see any poo beach, tiny bar or a murky swimming pool but what we did see we liked very much. (see my posted photos of our stay)
This hotel was a great place to stay and a good alternative to renting a condo if you want to be right on the water. The room is equipped with a coffee pot, air conditioning and a mini fridge to stock all the cerveza you can drink. That’s all one really needs, right? For folks that are concerned about safety, this hotel has a secure entrance and room safe.
The staff at this hotel is excellent and very friendly and helpful. Restaurants and bars are right around the corner. Can’t wait to come back!

Just returned from my first stay at Playa Maya and can't wait to go back. Wonderful service from the moment I walked in. I love the beach and always look for a location where I can see and hear it from my room. Playa Maya exceeded my expectations for location and much more. The beach and water are great for walking, swimming or relaxing with a book. So nice to be in a small hotel with personal service from the staff. They made sure everything was perfect -- room, beach chairs, food and drinks, suggestions for restaurants, etc. Bonus: they were happy to help me with my Spanish! The room was clean, comfortable and had a beautiful view. Mini-fridge was great for keeping snacks and cold drinks.

Room Tip: higher floors have best view

Just back home one week after a 9th stay at Playa Maya, another 3 week one, and it's becoming hard to believe the experience can keep getting better every year. But, it does. The beach was excellent this year, full and wide driven by favourable winds and waves.

The service is legendary, delivered by a staff that must have one of the lowest turnover rates in Playa del Carmen. From housekeeping to beach food/beverage service to storing a cake in the restaurant fridge for us in advance of a house party to packaging up two watercolours we bought for transport home, they can handle anything with excellence.

The weather was a bit cool this year, but there was no hint of any "poo beach" smell at any time in late February/early March. The one or two days some seaweed washed in overnight, it was promptly cleaned up each morning.

Playa Maya should be rated # 1.

Room Tip: Top floor ocean view rooms are our choice

Playa Maya is truly a rest and relaxation destination hidden gem!

Here's what you get:
+ Location - situated on a great natural beach in Playa del Carmen; only a few steps from your room to the coral white sand and beautiful warm Caribbean waters; very short walk to a plethora of restaurants, shops, water activities and entertainment; only beach access to the hotel; hotel is far enough away from late night party spots to maintain a quiet and restful experience
+ Service - outstanding personal service from a friendly, caring and professional staff whom enjoy their work making your stay truly enjoyable and memorable; no line ups; no waiting for service; great attention to detail; none of the numerous 5 star resorts I have stayed in can match the exceptional personal service from the staff and owners that is genuine and consistent for the duration of your stay
+ Accommodations - 20 total rooms; more than adequate for space and comfort; quality mattresses; excellent hot showers; many rooms with good ocean views; very clean; good sized in-room safes; quiet and effective air conditioning; small but nice pool and spa tub; on site professional massage for very reasonable prices; on site security
+ Food - all of the food and beverages are outstanding in quality, freshness, presentation and value; good selection; ability to accommodate some reasonable special requests; dine on the beach; kitchen closes at 4 PM and Bar at 9 PM; can charge meals and drinks to your room

If you are looking for rest and relaxation, good value, quiet, clean comfortable moderate accommodations, great food, great service, a small quaint quality hotel on a beautiful natural beach located close to shops, restaurants, entertainment, water activities and access to other amenities, are understanding of what the hotel and area offers, and are friendly and willing to share an enjoyable experience with new like-minded friends, then Playa Maya is a great choice.

Don't come here if you are looking for total seclusion or grand royalty, even though you get a taste of both at Playa Maya.

If I could give a higher rating for the food, staff and service, I would! When you experience Playa Maya and do meet many of the repeat customers, some of whom have been staying here for numerous extended vacations, it certainly speaks volumes about Playa Maya. I will most definitely be coming back here!

Thank you Stephen and staff for a superb experience!

Harvey K.

Back to Playa Maya for my 5th time and still love this small, botique hotel right on the water. Beautiful view of water from our room; private lounge chairs waiting for you on the beach in the morning, as is your included breakfast. Staff was great as usual and finally got to meet the owner Stephen was we were eating breakfast. As I have stated in the past, my favorite room is 302. Will definately be back again! Thank you Stephen for the complimentary bottles of beer and soda waiting in our refrig as well as the bottle of tequila!

We were lucky to visit this wonderful hotel in December. We booked the economy suite and this consisted of 2 rooms with 4 double beds. We were so impressed with everything at this resort. It's situated on one of the loveliest beaches in Playa. The breakfast which is included in the price was great as we're the 2 bottles of water that was left every day. Eating in 5 th avenue is ridiculous and we got ripped off the first night and paid 100 dollars for a terrible meal. We wandered away from 5 th avenue the next night and found some wonderful restaurants where the locals eat. Please do yourself a favour give Cancun a miss and visit this wonderful little town and stay at this amazing g hotel .

The Good:
*Inexpensive to stay
*Great location for dining and walking up and down all the avenues
*Nice view from upper balconies, beautiful sunrises
*Very clean - maids were fantastic
*Hardworking staff, friendly service
*Complimentary breakfast was nice

The Bad:
*Poo beach - hard to enjoy the beach when it smells so bad - every single day, all day. Even opening the windows in the hotel room would bring the stench in.
*Tiny, unusable pool, murky water
*Tiny on site bar - have to leave to get drinks and hang out
*Walking across another resorts beach to get to hotel gets annoying

Decent, clean budget hotel, but I won't be back to stay!
