“Exotic home on the beach!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

What a beautiful little boutique hotel facing out to the beach! The location was fun, just a quick walk across the sand to the front door, the staff were consistently warm and helpful, and the food service was the best in Playa del Carmen. We spent 10 nights in the Deluxe Balcony room on the 3rd floor, waking up each morning to a magnificent view of the ocean. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The breakfasts couldn't have been any better, delicious food served by Carlos, Juan and Luciano, and a table on the beach with an unparalleled view. We were in Playa del Carmen long enough to try a variety of restaurants but no one served food as delicious and high quality as the Playa Maya. The front desk staff were very accommodating and admirably improving their English every day in order to provide excellent service. Thank you, Marie, Pablo and Oscar. You do the management credit! Our room service lady did more than keep our room clean and create incredible towel art: she even brought me some medicinal cream for some nasty insect bites on my legs. Thank you, thank you for that! I can't end this review without commenting on the excellent massage staff employed by Playa Maya. They are excellent, standards are high, and nothing beats lying on the beach and having your stresses massaged away. Truly an exotic and thoroughly satisfying experience. See you again sometime soon.

Room Tip: Spend the extra to face the ocean. It is a luxury to sit out on the balcony and hear the waves lapp...

I arrived on Nov. 28th and stayed for 3 nights. Stayed in a deluxe balcony room because I wanted to splurge for a great view. Don't think I would splurge again as I feel it was not worth it, yes you can see the ocean and it is beautiful but the balcony is so small that you really did not want to spend any time out there (room 304) The room was clean and basic, bathroom was clean and never had a problem with hot water. Fridge was a nice addition. Staff was very kind and I even enjoyed a massage there. I will probably stay elsewhere next time though

Hello again, and thanks for posting your comments on your stay at our property. We're glad you found so many aspects of it to your liking, but wanted to comment and clear up some confusion regarding the less impressive aspects you mentioned, involving your room choice and the view and balcony.

I've just looked back through our correspondence, and I see that we actually never discussed with you our Deluxe rooms. That would indeed have been the type to go for if what you were trying to do was splurge for a great view, as you put it. We make it a point to note on our site that the Deluxe type is the type that offers our best ocean views.

However you first indicated you would like to go with just a garden view Standard room, citing cost concerns, and it was only later, when you mentioned the possibility of some ocean view, that we began discussing our intermediate-priced Superior rooms as a possible alternative — a compromise between our most economical and nicest options.

We spent some time comparing and contrasting the Superior and Standard for you, noting for example that the Superior rooms with ocean view would be on an elevated floor and offer a roomier, 2-person balcony than those in the Standard rooms, which are really just big enough for 1 person to enjoy. We also referred you to the pages on our site that display these rooms and photos of the views from each of them, for your reference, hoping that would help you make the best decision based on your preferences.

Ultimately you elected to go with the Superior type, but again not the Deluxe, as you state in your review here. If you check your confirmation, you'll see that the Superior is clearly noted there as being the type you reserved. And actually, if you compare with our site, you may note that the view from the particular Superior room you had is actually also better than what we showed you for this room type, as we intentionally show on our site only views from the lowest floor units of the type, precisely so that people may be pleasantly surprised by receiving something better than advertised, upon their arrival, but certainly nothing less than that. You may also note that the balcony there is also described as a balcony for 2, and indeed if you recall you had 2 chairs and a small table on your balcony for your use.

Anyway, given your comments here, it sounds like you might have been happier either actually splurging for that great view you referred to and that is offered by our Deluxe rooms, or perhaps going for the savings and and the more economical Standard room. But of course we never know, we can only just provide people the information and go with what they decide. :-) So again we're sorry you weren't happier with those aspects of the Superior room, but we just want to make sure others don't get the wrong idea about our rooms. And again we're very glad you enjoyed the location, staff, cleanliness, massage and other aspects of the stay that you mentioned. Happy travels to you!

My wife and I recently stayed with some friends at the Playa Maya from December 28 - January 4. This was our fourth time to Playa del Carmen, but our first time venturing away from an all inclusive resort. So after one week at a resort we took a taxi to Playa Maya. Right from the beginning the hotel staff made us feel welcome. As soon as they saw us with our luggage, two employees ran over and carried our suitcases across the beach and into the hotel. Upon check in, it was immediately evident they all made an effort to remember our names.

The next day, there was no need to get up early for beach loungers - the hotel staff had two set up for us already. After breakfast on the beach (included each day) we settled into endless days of relaxation on the beach. The service on the beach for food or beverages was always very good...with a waive of your hand to catch their eye, one of the staff would promptly come over to help us. The food was always excellent, although we really only tried a handful of items from the sizeable menu.

Our room was clean and cool (thanks to the A/C), with a wonderful view from the third floor. The deluxe balcony had a very comfortable king sized bed, flat screen TV, closet, safe and a small bathroom. We did find the hot water was limited each day, so if you need a long hot shower every day, you will be disappointed. Free wi-fi is available throughout the hotel and on the beach.

One of the many bonuses for us was the proximity to 5th Avenue in Playa del Carmen. A short one block stroll from the hotel, and the endless bars, restaurants and stores for shopping offer something to do any day or night. (for the night owls, you should check out Cocco Bongo - a late night club)

Overall we really enjoyed our trip and would absolutely return. If you are looking for large, all inclusive, luxurious and 5 star accommodations, the Hotel Playa Maya may not be for you. If you are looking for a small, comfortable, clean boutique hotel where the staff make you feel at home, I would highly recommend it. Never before have I stayed at a hotel where I left knowing the names of so may of the staff. My thank you to Stepen Ryberg for answering all of our questions during the booking process and greeting us when we arrived. And my thanks to Marie, Oscar, Juan, Louis, Carlos, Jesus, Sergio, Luciano, Alberto and of course, Angelina, who provided a few extras without having to ask - like a powerbar when she saw all of our devices.

We spent 5 nights in the Deluxe Balcony room on the 3rd floor. This hotel was exactly what we were looking for. It's right on the beach, so you have to enter from the sand. It's a block off the main strip so you won't hear any of the noise from the street at night. All we heard each night was the gentle pounding of the surf. Our room had a TV with enough English language channels to keep us entertained before bed, and a DVD player. We had a fridge with complimentary beer, soda and water. Each day we returned to an impressive towel decoration on our bed. The free breakfast was great--pancakes, waffles or eggs(and not the rubbery, assembly line type you get in the US chains, but made to order). We loved eating right on the beach with our toes in the powdery sand. The staff was extremely friendly--always greeting us with "Hola, como estas?" The hotel is in a perfect location. It's within walking distance to the Cozumel ferry, a block off the main strip and right on the beach. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We were in room 302, which I think had the best view. We had a beautiful view of the sea.

We booked 5 nights at the Playa Maya following 5 nights at a Cancun all inclusive. Yes, we definitely wanted a different experience and you get it with Playa Maya.

The previous reviews give an accurate account of the pros and cons of the property. We felt the pros FAR exceeded the cons. The staff is very, very friendly and actually seem to care that you have a good time. The named staffers in prior reviews are definitely as good as suggested. The place does feel like "home". The food? Well, the food (particularly the coconut shrimp and fish tacos) is among the best Mexican food in Playa Del Carmen. You can even bring your own bottle of wine to the restaurant and they will open it and provide glasses, giving you an unbelievable view of the blue sea. The room was clean, relatively spacious and the balcony in our 3rd floor room provided a great view. I would point out the bed was more comfortable than our new, high tech all inclusive in Cancun. The hotel will provide recommendations, and directions, for off site restaurants and attractions.

Now, the cons: you have to want to experience a boutique hotel to enjoy Playa Maya. If you want luxury, you will be disappointed. The pool area is miniscule and there's nothing to do inside the hotel if the weather turns bad. The internet service is mediocre. (We did not turn on the TV during our stay so we cannot comment on it.) We found the "one towel per person per day" policy rather stingy. We also found the detailed list of fines for lost items a bit of a turn-off when we checked in. The facility lacks an elevator and is not handicapped friendly. The bathroom is small and has only one sink. The hot water is limited. There are a very limited number of rooms with acceptable water views.

Would we stay here again? Of course. No question.

Room Tip: Rooms best for a view would include 302, 301 and 202. Most other rooms do not have a view of the vi...

We stayed for 2 weeks at Playa Maya in a top floor room with balcony and sea view. It really suited our needs for pure relaxation, being right on the beach and so close to so many bars and restaurants.

The staff were very efficient and courteous, be it serving breakfast, putting out sun-loungers or cleaning the room (with much-pictured towel animals!). The room itself was clean, with a big comfy bed and good air-con, with fridge provided and unlimited drinking water on tap.

Main room for improvement would be to upgrade the internet and tv - internet was very unreliable and slow at best, while the tv lacked for english-language channels among the 80+ available.

We came back to our vacation "Home" for the second straight year for all the reasons many others have mentioned before. We want to personally thank Stephen for a seamless booking and the superior staff he has put together that made our 1 week stay the 1st of October another memorable experience. I know I am leaving a few folks out but I have to thank Maria, Pablo and Julianna at the front desk, Juan and Fidel in housekeeping, and last but not least Luciano and Carlos and Alberto at the restaurant and beach for doing everything they could to make us smile.

Room Tip: Try a full body massage 1 hr $25us
