We are a couple in our 40’s and stayed at OGFX during June 2006.
RESORT LAYOUT
This is a huge resort with 29 acres and 750 rooms. There are five main areas. The main building with lobby, reception, shops, restaurants, and theater. Flamenco Buildings consisting of buildings 18 – 22 around a very large, activity, pool. Cangrejo Buildings consisting of buildings 14 –17 around a smaller, quiet, pool. Royal Club, exclusive rooms and pool. Beach Club with beach, bar, buffet restaurant, and Adults only pool.
The areas are dispersed over the property so they are more or less isolated from one another. This makes for considerable walking but gives the feeling of a smaller resort since the guests are also dispersed over the property. Takes a couple days to get oriented and find the quickest route to the various areas.
Although spread out, nothing is more than a 5 -10 minute walk away. There is also a shuttle tram with several stops. Rode it a couple times and never waited more than 5 minutes. Riding the tram allows you to see areas of the resort you wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
ROOMS
We stayed in a Junior Suite. The Jr Suites are double the size of a Deluxe (aka Superior) room because of an added sitting area. Was glad to have the extra area for reading or lounging before going out at night and upon returning. The couches are comfortable enough to be an extra bed.
Amenities in the room included coffee maker, dead bolt lock, hair dryer, iron and small ironing board, ceiling fan, safe, and even a couple umbrellas. A/C was as cold as you wanted it.
The room in divided in half by a pony wall so that the room is open. The bedroom side has a king bed, large closet with plenty of hangers and shelves, two end tables, desk, and chair. The sitting area has a sofa and built-in couch, armoire with TV, fridge and drawers, chair, and a couple of tables. Bathroom features a full length mirror, oversize shower, large towels, and a shampoo and body wash dispenser.
The small TV has a satellite feed with PPV movies. (a few English language channels including CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC. The cube refrigerator holds 8 water bottles and maybe 4 cans.
Our room (19109) was ground floor at a corner. Our patio wrapped the room. If you have a family that requires two rooms, they have a nice configuration. Next to our room was a Deluxe with two double beds (superior room). The rooms share a small foyer with a door to the interior of the building, You can lock the foyer door from the inside to have free access between each room. I included a diagram in my photos to better illustrate the configuration.
Although our building (Flamenco 19) was adjacent to the “Activity” pool, our room was at a far corner so we didn’t hear any of the activities from the pool. The building interiors are tile and concrete so noise from walking, loud conversations, and door slams can be a problem. The one night we went to bed early (10:00 PM) we did awake several times to the collateral noise of people coming in later that night. Earplugs are suggested if you don’t plan on hitting the bed late and hard.
POOLS/BEACH
The Flamenco“activity” pool is where the fun & games, announcements, and loud music take place. This is the largest pool and has a swim up bar. A snack bar (buffet) and regular bar are on top of the swim up bar. A few trees provide the only shade for this pool.
The Cangrejo “quiet” pool is surrounded by palapas with light screening. Within the pool there are several “jacuzzis’. These are jetted recessed areas that while not heated are enjoyable to sit in. This pool has a swing bar with adjacent showers and restrooms. This was our favorite pool.
The “Adults Only” pool is a saltwater pool constructed of rock. We didn’t find the pool very inviting to enter. Topless sunbathing is permitted at this pool. This pool has palapas and a shower. Bar service is available from the Beach Club buffet. The best feature of this pool is the sound of the ocean waves crashing against the rocky shore.
Beach Area. Man-made and more of a small lagoon. The beach is sandy but the waves are very small as they enter from the ocean through a small inlet. The ocean is not readily visible from the beach. The beach area also features swinging, canopied covered beds. There is a bar adjacent to the beach. The “Adults only” pool and Beach Club buffet are located next to the beach.
General- There are plenty of chaises at each pool. Towels are available at the beach, quiet pool and activity pool. Beverage orders are taken at each area but it can take awhile for the servers to come around as there usually seemed to be only one person working each area. However, the bars are usually convenient to walk to.
FOOD/RESTURANTS
Found the buffet food to be above average for an AI. Each buffet (3 ) had similar items with the larger ones offering more choices. Ice cream is available at all and was very good as were the bakery items. For whatever reason, there was a shortage of salt shakers. I usually had to search a bit before I found one.
Kid friendly items such as chicken nuggets, burgers, hot dogs, and fries were available at all the buffets.
Service was typical of most buffets. Wait staff was prompt to appear with initial beverage orders but not around much for refills.
Espresso, Cappuccino, and Café Latte are available at “The Buffet” but you need to ask.
We did not dine at any of the reservation restaurants preferring to head in to PDC to enjoy the many good restaurants there. Others were very complimentary of the food in the OGFX’s restaurants.
Pacos’ Tacos offers al la carte Mexican food. Service was good as was the food.
In the mornings there is a cart near the lobby bar that offers self-serve coffee, tea, and sweet breads.
BARS
Along with the beach bars, there is a lobby bar, sports bar, and discothèque. Sports bar has several flat screen TVs and was a good place to watch World Cup matches. DJ in the disco got things moving and crazy.
OTHER-
Snorkel equipment is available for free for 60 minutes. A $30 charge is posted for any time after that.
There is a money exchange at the front desk. Competitive rate but not the market rate.
Convenience Store on-site (Tobacco Shop) offers sundries, sport and energy drinks, souvenirs; tobacco, and medical items (even Viagra OTC)
Internet access is available for $5 for 20 minutes.
Taxi fare to PDC (Calle 5) is $100 pesos each way.
Tipping-as always not expected but appreciated. We usually did about $1 a drink order, a couple dollars for baggage, and a couple more for housekeeping every day.
Xacret-adjacent to OGFX. The resort provides a gondola ride to the park. The distance is only about 50 meters so walking is definitely an option. You receive a free one day pass allowing you to enter and leave as you please. Location allows you to arrive early before the cruise ship excursion crowds.
Service-found most everyone to be pleasant, customer oriented, and fluent in English.
Crowds-Never stood in line for more than a couple minutes at the front desk, buffets, bars, or anywhere else. Plenty of chaises and palapas for everyone to share.
Entertainment-Can’t opine as we did not attend any shows. We did enjoy the band that plays prior to the shows in the early evening.
Weather- Every weather website predicted 60% to 100% chance of rain every day of our trip. We saw only short showers on a couple days and had pleanty of sun and partly cloudy days. Not the usual humidy and heat you’d expect this time of year. So don’t pay attention to the weather forecasts.
Travel Arrangements – Air and land transportation was handled by FunJet/LOMAS. Excellent experience as always.
Check-in/out- Our room was available when we checked in around 11:00 AM. No waiting at check out. Had a late flight out but they held our bags in storage. You have full use of the resort, including the showers in the gym until you leave.
Pueblo Del Rio- This is the river walk that runs through the main building. It is lined with shops and hotel rooms above the shops.
Gym- Did not use but saw that it was comparable to a small Bally’s or Gold’s Gym. Good quality equipment consisting of Olympic weights, cable machines, and plenty of cardio. Never saw more than a couple people using this facility.
Snorkeling- Okay at the beach if you haven’t done much snorkeling before because there are fish to see. Booked a tour on-line with Tank Ha in town for $30/person. Took us not too very far from OGFX and experienced some of the best snorkeling ever. (even better than Cozumel). Abundant coral, colorful sea fans, shallow water, and so many fish you almost had to push them out of the way.
Clientel- Couples and small groups. Families with small children. Good diversity of Americans, Canadians, and UK with a smaller percentage of other nationalities.
WOULD WE RETURN?
Loved the resort, rooms, and staff. However, the reason we go to PDC is for the endless sandy beach along the aquamarine, topaz, and turquoise water. The beach at OGFX, while nice enough, does not compare to the beaches along PDC and Playacar. Sorry, but for this reason alone we would not return to OGFX.
