“Loved el mandarin”

After reading reviews I too was nervous. Excellent place. My sister got married on the beach there and there were about 30 of us.

Upon check in, very polite and got us to our rooms right away. We were in the pool within 30 minutes of check in. Facilities are incredible-clean, and always being groomed. Entertainment was fabulous and we had a great time. Would recommend this place to anyone. We traveled with our two children 5 & 7 and they are already asking when we could go back again!

Our family stayed from april 19th to the 26th, had a wonderful holiday, the breakfast and lunch were excellent but dinner wasnt so great, met lots of nice people and the hotel staff were very friendly. Beware to take cash if you want to do water sports or any beauty treatments. You cannot charge anything to your room. Our room was very large and perfect for a family of four, we never ran out of hot water and the air conditioner worked fine.
Older resort needs some upgrades, the stones around the pool are uneven and you have to be careful with bare feet. Our children loved the angel fish in the ocean and the crabs, and turtles to look at. The gardens are beautiful. We also loved the band that played in the lobby and dancing lessons.

Got back last week from an amazing 2 weeks in mexico at the Club El Mandarin. Everything from the travel advisor to our drive home was perfect, no problems at all....perfecto. Beautiful, clean, resort, happy, friendly, helpfull staff. The pool palapa is where it's at, for casual breakfast in your bikini to quiet drinks under the stars (lobby was very busy- still amazing service though). The food and presentation at the buffet beat the socks off any buffet we've ever seen (totally amazed). All the staff are so HARD working. We both have nothing to complain about, except....power kept going out in our room most every night. BIG DEAL. Can't wait to go back next year :)

My husband and I stayed at the Mandarin from April 13th through the 19th. We had the time of our lives!! There were a few negatives about this resort but over all I would return. The first day we arrived the A/C did not work very well but we told the staff in the morning and they were quick to fix it and it was like an icebox every day forward. Apparently there are power issues down in Mexico; it was nothing the hotel could control. We were not affected personally but I did hear a few other guests complain about no power in the rooms and the hot water running out. One day the shower piece broke but was promptly fixed. We were in a room right next to the main building were the disco was, the first night it was annoying because the music was VERY loud, but every night after that we were so tired that it did not make a difference. There is a show every night, we only attended two, and there is the disco, which we also went two times. The staff was extremely nice and tried to keep things interesting. There was always something to do. Some people on the web site here have complained about the music by the pool, it did not bother me and half the time I was in my own world relaxing or playing a game that I couldn’t even tell you the name of one song that was played. I also saw somewhere that someone complained about seaweed, HELLO you are on a beach, besides the staff had it cleaned up immediately. The other guests where a total blast too, it didn’t matter if you understood each other or not, every one danced and played games together. I have to send a HUGE Hello to the CRAZIES GUYS FROM Rhode Island and to our new Friends from Alberta, JAIMIE AND CLINT…Si, Si, Si. Yes the drinks were very watered down, BUT I learned by another guest, just ask the bartender to make them strong and they are happy to oblige. The beach was ok, there are this angel fish very close to the beach line and they will swim all around and under you, that kind of grossed me out so I was good with just staying in the pool, not to many people did go into the ocean, the water was blue but a little cloudy, we were further south one day for a Dolphin Adventure and that beach was so clear, so the beaches further south are a bit better, but I prefer being closer to Cancun and the Airport. The food was ok, the buffet got a little boring our favorite night was Mexican night, the upstairs restaurant was stupid, it was way to much of a production, it took to long to sit you, and serve you. The Mexican restaurant was a bit of the same way but not as much and the food was great. There was plenty of chairs on the beach and you can always find a shady spot if you want on. The last night we were there the hotel staff put on a strip show for the ladies in the disco (it was kept pretty clean, I’d say PG 16), the men were mucho hot!! The rooms and the ground were spot less; I never smelled anything funny, no sewer smells or anything. This is one of the more economy resorts but over all we had a great time and I would go back. If you are looking for everything to be perfect then go to the more expensive hotels but if you are just looking to relax and are on a budget then I recommend Club Mandarin.

My husband and I went on vacation with another couple which first and foremost makes any vacation fun. We actually had a really good time despite a few things. Reception accommodated us with rooms that faced the ocean by slipping them a 50 dollar bill. The beach was really relaxing and the pool was well kept with pool activities all day long. We spent a lot of time in the town of Playa Del Carmen, only a $10 cab ride each way. The few nights we were actually there for dinner, the food was horrible, and the nightly shows were so cheesy. Breakfast was always very nice, even lunch too, with a lot of selection. Oh, and if you get a late night hankering for something to eat, you are screwed. Dinner closes early and nothing is open late, not even a snack bar! I personally love this town and will probably choose to stay at a quaint hotel there in the city versus an all-inclusive. If you stay at the resort you are really missing out!!

Mandarin was ok, but needs to update. Older buildings. Lost power two nights we stayed there. Much emphasis on drinking and alcohol. Staff was wonderful- warm and welcoming. Spoke English well. Area beautiful. cabbies, shopkeepers & most locals speak English. Small ants in our bathroom.

We just spent a week at the Club El Mandarin and, although we enjoyed our holiday, we wouldn't go back to this hotel. Our experience was very mixed: some things were good, some things were not-so-good. Our summary is that if you get a package deal of a good price, then you will probably have a very nice time, but don't stay here looking for perfection.

Some details: we loved the bar/lobby area, with its big wicker chairs and lots of plants; having cocktails by the turtle pool in the evening, among long colonades and palm trees. The front desk staff were extremely helpful at all times and responded with efficiency when we complained. Everything was very clean. Some of the theme nights in the main buffet were rather good, particularly the Mexican night. The grounds are beautiful, and the fact that it is surrounded by jungle is wonderful. The clientele was quite international, which we liked, and the small size of the resort made it easy to make friends.

Things that we didn't like: there was a smell of drains in our room, and one night there was a flood in our block. We were surprised at how quickly it was dealt with, but nonetheless, it was irritating to be woken up at 4am with water slooshing under the door. There was intermittent power for a while, and although this seemed out of control of the hotel for the most part, there was a night when some rooms had power and ours didn't. Also we had insufficient hot water resulting in several cold showers, and after complaining on two occasions, we were moved to another room. The staff were very courteous about the complaints.

The food was ok, but at times pretty average. The breakfast omlettes were very good, and the guacamole excellent! The fish at dinner was good too, but often many of the dishes looked rather tired. The a la carte restaurant was a bit hit and miss: my food was overcooked and uninspiring but my husband's was delicious.

The entertainment staff were full of energy. The constant raucous music at the poolside was a bit irritating, and the evening entertainment was frankly bad (except for a traditional dance troop from Playa del Carmen), but other activities were fun. Top marks to Annie and the beach volleyball.

If the food were improved, music played at the pool only occasionally, and some of the issues with rooms were ironed out, our experience would have been much better.
