“Great Time in Paradise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

The one thing missing was an ocean view from our room. apartment style complex
There are ocean view rooms so if it is important to you then you may need to pay extra and make sure to mention it at reservation.
What a gorgeous place! grounds great! wildlife, rooms were modern, clean and comfortable, resort was small easy to get around. It was my b day and they sent me a cake and card to my room.
Pools right by the ocean you can relax and still see the ocean from the pool
Pool is not a big party more subdued w/music playing but with no kids the resort takes on a VERY relaxed and posh atmosphere.
Beach: sporadic waiter service but I walked to the bar often (exercise:) beach is powder, long and clean there is a glass wall but this mean you are that close to the ocean and you could go either right of left of it and be right on the beach, water was lovely, fishes swimming at your feet.
Daily activities, volleyball, kayaking etc! to the left of the resort down the beach a 10 min walk is a natural lagoon. We also kayaked to the lagoon one day with a few cold ones and had a great time
lounger chairs and Palapa's no problem getting one..you my have to drag it to where you want to be , but so what.
Cabana beds were a nice touch and you do not have to be VIP to use them.
Food was ok at buffet the fresh juices were great! the ala carte restaurants were very good!! house wine is TERRIBLE but you can buy a bottle as you will not have a choice, consider buying some and bring it with you!
Massage on beach professional, relaxing and reasonable price
Staff Service was very good, the staff always go out of their way to make you feel good if you smile and are friendly, and tip and TRY to say a few Spanish words they work hard for you!
Night life there was a Saxophone player that could be heard through out the resort, before dinner nice touch!. If you are with a partner I think it is perfect place for a romantic time.
The nightly entertainment was good but this time I did not go although I could see the stage from the plaza,,staying outside was a big deal to me, as the winter in Canada was very long.
Buying from the locals feels great! support small business! they came twice in the week with lots of things to buy.
Partying not so much...but we did jump into the pool the first night with new friends, if you want to party every night this is not the right place it is very quite after midnight , unless you leave to go to the clubs! Coco Bongo's(book it at hotel) is the best party ever!! been to the one in Cancun and now Playa what a great time!
Transportation to during the day to town or Tulum easy as we took a a shuttle van easy they stop on the highway and pick you up! you have to walk to highway 10mins (exercise) nice vans, and cheap..all the way to Tulum! and back.go to Tulum and get a guide if you have not gone before.
The other guests were great it is an international hotel, met new friends from France, Britain, USA.
Just remember if you want a little more subdued/romantic holiday this is a good spot, if you want to party hard and loud you may need to go somewhere else or you will be bored in the evenings
I went with a single girlfriend this time and would not go back with a girlfriend not enough single people for her to meet, but I would go back with my husband. I would go to a RIU for a pary atmosphere.
Thank you Ocean Maya I had a great time!

The staff, food and accommodations were great. The weather was cloudy for the first two and a half days but still very warm. Despite the weather we had a great time and who wouldn't with all the various activities throughout the day from water sports to dancing, music and all of restaurants were great. Mikes Coffee shop cannot be beat, every coffee they make is excellent and atmosphere just as excellent. We appreciated the staff and their kind service. When we checked in we got a room with two beds instead of one as we had requested and booked but the next day they moved us to the room type we requested. We had a porch near the pool and La Dolce Vita, quiet with a good view of the beach.
We would go back and or recommend this place to anyone looking for an all-inclusive adult’s only resort.

Room Tip: As you look at the hotel from an aerial view from the beach the rooms near the pool on the left I wo...

This hotel is really special. Such a friendly welcoming place. The location is brilliant right on the beach and just a short walk from the amazing blue lagoon. Plenty of food to choose from all cooked to a high standard with very friendly chefs and waiter's and waitresses. The staff at this hotel just cant seem to do enough for you. They will always go the extra mile to ensure your holiday is great. The entertainment team at the ocean maya are brilliant. They always seem to have so much energy and always have a smile on there face and have something to do for everyone. From beach/water volleyball to blackjack and poker. They also do a great job of remembering all the guests by name. All in all well worth its 5 star rating and I shall be returning next year.

Arrived back on Sunday am after a fab 2 week holiday at this hotel.
The grounds are beautiful and well kept. Whilst there we saw staff working hard on the gardens and general up keep of the hotel every day so keeping it as tidy all the time.
We had a balcony room which was large with a huge bed and a nice view over the surrounding 'jungle'. Maid service and new supplies in the fridge everyday. Once or twice something missing but a quick call to reception and it was brought up in moments.
Food was great. Always enough choice at buffet and we enjoyed the Italian and Japanese.
Pools aren't huge but plenty big enough and we sat on the beach area where there was always enough beds.
All staff we dealt with were friendly and helpful.
Went with Thomson and have no complaints. Lindsey the rep was very nice and full of ideas to help you enjoy your holiday.
Short taxi ride to Playa and the bars and shops is a nice trip.
This hotel is great for a relaxed holiday. We really enjoyed it and met some lovely people.
We would go back.

Room Tip: Don't worry about taking towels as there are plenty in the room and you also get clean pool towe...

My wife and I have made a commitment to go to Mexico every May for our anniversary and this year we chose the Ocean Maya based on its location near Playa and price. We've been to the VIM and CRT so far, plus have been through easily a dozen time share presentations as well so we have a lot to compare the Ocean to.

I should also mentioned that we traveled with 4 friends and the overall impression was similar to this. The Ocean isn't great, but the staff are wonderful and work so hard. I would give this a higher rating if the hotel hired more of them. Here's why:

1) We have seen no other hotel that did not have enough staff to pick up used plastic drink cups on a regular basis. If you get to the pool late, you may have to pick-up the other guests cups since the staff just isn't able to. I do not blame the staff for this at all.

2) We were in building 10 from 5/29-6/6 and complained about mesquitos many times, but nothing was done about it. We met another couple that was also in this building and had the same issue. Seemed to be mostly in the closet for some reason. The door does not have a screen and was never left open either.

3) El Churro is the lunch option next to the pool. I had read another review saying the birds would eat off of the buffet. We only saw it once, but thankfully it was on our first day. We stayed away from the fruit and ice cream. Apparently they loved sprinkles. Yuck!

Tips: Bring a pool lounger! Not every resort provides them, but you can buy them there for $17.50 or hit Target/Walmart before you leave if you're smart about it.

Also, the ocean is not good here. I mean it. Although if you take a walk to the lagoon, you will see resorts with even worse. Lagoon was awesome though.

Overall, we still had a good time because, after all, you're in Mexico! I don't think we will be back, but would consider it if they add more to this wonderful staff.

June 6th-12th, 2014 stay…...Ocean Maya Royale......simply put.......is among the best for what you’re paying! I’m amazed by the one’s who post whining comments on petty complaints........Not sure what kind of people they are exactly but they need to go somewhere else! We spent 7 days there this past week (from Oklahoma) and NEVER experienced “odors”, “attitudes” or “issues”. Did get respectfully asked to go dry off before lunch one day but no worries, the tile floors are slippery when wet....duh! The Blue Moon is the ONLY dining that request you dress up (pants and shirt for us, skirt and top for the ladies (and Sandals are OK too for the guys, wish I’d have know that) The staff wasn’t overly friendly but always eager to please and busted their butts to go over the top!! Granted, some aren’t always “delighted” to see you “all the time” but then again, you wouldn’t be either if you were dealing with Americans, Brits and Europeans day in and day out. The rooms and (firm) beds are perfect with great AC, the food isn’t “perfect” but for a fairly priced A.I. (with options at every corner) what’s there really to complain about? And the Pools / Beach are full of good times! Tony, Nacho and Miguel at the “active” pool / pool bar are AWESOME! They’ll get you loaded if you’re not careful.....just ask my brother and my son. Water volleyball, competition games and friendly atmosphere allow for some great fellowship and we made many, new /great friends from all over.....England, Europe, Colorado, Georgia and Arizona! Really gonna miss them all but will stay in touch. If you’re a bit on the quiet side, the BIG pool is your escape. Relaxed, quick dippers and readers will love it! Scuba diving is great for the price and Diego was a STUD! Very patient with the German (couple) diver’s who definitely needed a free refresher course in the pool..........their loss....... they missed an awesome dive! Overall..........you can’t beat Ocean Maya. We’ve experienced Cozumel, Dominican, Nassau, St. Martin, St. Thomas and more and I put this retreat at the top. If you’re disappointed after your experience .......... then you’ve got issues ........... not the Resort! Here’s some great Insider info as well. Take a 15 minute stroll up the beach (north to the third PRICEY resort). You may run into some confrontation if you cross paths with Resort staff in that they consider it private. Just keep your Maya wrist band concealed and you’ll be fine. As you approach the big wooden bridge that crossing the small canal (outflow from the Cenotes), start hanging a left and head towards the resort itself to the main paved entry road, just past the employees/maintenance area. Stay to your right until you reach a concrete/sand maintenance road surrounded by mangrove forrest. It eventually leads (another 200 yards or so) to a stone island/turn around. Turn right, going sown a narrow (4’ wide) path about another 100 yards to the staging point. Grab a life jacket/float and jump or climb down to the crystal clear, 10-15’ deep hidden Cenotes (underground cave/pool). It’s de-luted salt water fed from the ocean and flows/returns to the same canal just across the original Big wooden bridge. Drift/Snorkel the canal back towards the coastline and take in all the amazing sites of fish and mangroves.... you won’t be disappointed!! Make sure to bring a snorkel and goggles from the Dive Shop!!!! Enjoy......…. B. McMains Tulsa,Ok…USA

Room Tip: Book at least a Maya Deluxe……..do not do the Privilege (unless you want to be catered to. Ocean vie...

My boyfriend and I stayed at the ocean maya for a week in arriving on April 29. We enjoyed our stay! Met some amazing new friends and enjoyed our time in the pool.

The bartenders at night in the lobby bar could be quite rude and seemed inconvenienced by asking for drinks, night time entertainment could be much better..

No reservations for the a la carte restaurants were abit of a hassle, as for the complaints about the food I have nothing bad to say, a buffet is a buffet. The Italian was good, Blue moon has some delicious oysters.

Grounds of the resort were well maintained and beautiful! Lots of wildlife to see, not bothersome by any means. Our room was clean, the maids do an excellent job, majority of the Staff was very polite - Ignacio at the pool bar was great.

I have to say Daniel Castro at the pool during the say and mexican a la carte at night made our trip! He went above and beyond to ensure we had a great time every day!!

All in all we had a great experience and would travel back to the ocean maya royale!!
