First and foremost, if you are looking for a great all-inclusive resort with adults only; where you can be absolutely relaxed, lounging on the beach; and where the food and drinks taste great; this is the place for you. Definitely go!
We went to the Blue Diamond during the first week in August 2013 and absolutely enjoyed it. This was during their low season and there were only about 60 guests at the resort so it felt a little more exclusive. Many of the guests were on their honeymoon. Although this is the rainy season, in eight days it only rained once and when it did, it was for just a short period of time and it cooled the temps off a bit. I definitely recommend a visit in early August.
The rooms were great. We stayed in one of the Palafitos rooms, which were a short walk from the beach. They are in the best location, in my opinion. We had a nice sized porch and a large sun deck on top. This was a great place to spend at night before heading to bed because you could see all of the stars. The shower was large and outside there was a tub that the staff would fill up with a bubble bath if you asked them. We never took advantage of the bubble bath, but it was available. The only issue with the room was that it took a few minutes for the shower water to warm up. It literally took about five minutes, but we just cut on the water, grabbed a beer, and waited.
The restaurants were all good. They all served excellent food. During our stay, because it was wasn't very full, they alternated opening the Ambar and the Aquamarine restaurants at night. Don't expect to lose weight here because the food is so good.
The two bars were nice too. The beach bar opened in the morning and stayed open late. It was right by the pool so you didn't have to go far from either the pool or the beach and in most cases a server would come to you and take your order for drinks so you didn't even have to move.
The M-Bar, located by the Ambar was only open in the evenings. It was nice and we even smoked the hookah on it one night after dinner.
This was a great place for just doing nothing. However, we did a few things while we were there. Serena took us out snorkeling. The snorkeling trip lasts about an hour and the reef is about 1/4 mile or so off of the beach in front of the resort. It was a great snorkeling trip and Serena was a great guide. They have scuba diving as well, but we didn't do it. They also have kayaks, paddle boards, and a sun fish sailboat, all of which you can take out during the day. There are jet skis for rent. There are also day trips you can take for a small fee. We went to Coba for one of the days and we set it up through Best Day travel. BD usually has a rep over by the beach for a few hours around lunchtime. They have a lot of other trips you can do and usually you can set it up the day prior. There is a spa on site, but we didn't get any of the spa treatments. They have a small fitness center which is adequate for basic workouts and some cardio on bikes or treadmills. Then again, I wasn't on vacation to spend all of my time working out. They also offer a Temazcal session. If you haven't done it, I recommend it. Expect to spend about 1.5 hours in the very hot steam room and if you have health issues, then it isn't for you.
The service at the Blue Diamond was absolutely phenomenal. One day we spent about 6 hours lounging on the beach and Cesar served us drinks and food without us having to even leave the beach for any food or drinks. Cesar provided absolutely wonderful service and we felt like royalty that day.
Guillermo, Eisenmann, Dagoberto, Roman, and Juan Alberto were all absolutely wonderful servers. We found ourselves trying to have one of these guys serve us when we went for meals. There are a lot of other good servers that work at the resort, but these guys really stood out.
Lucio and Daniel were great bartenders. Lucio took care of us at the beach bar and I never caught him without a smile on his face. Daniel worked at the M-Bar and don't be fooled by his age, he is a good bartender. Daniel is very social too and will be happy to talk to you if it's slow at the bar.
Overall this was a great vacation. Don't expect things to happen fast. When you go for meals or order drinks, they keep a slow pace. The first day of this was a little annoying, but after that, I liked the slower pace and figured, what's the rush? Plus, sometimes I needed the extra time to eat all of the food.
Some tips I recommend before you go:
-They provide bug spray but we took our own because we knew it would be a little better. There are mosquitoes and you will need to use it. Don't worry though because they aren't too bad.
-Most everywhere accepts the U.S. Dollar. We took about $800 and exchanged it for Pesos in the airport. I probably should have only exchanged about $200 and kept the rest in dollars.
-Check out 5th Avenue. It cost us about 200 pesos to go and the same coming back. Given it was a 15 minute drive on the highway, I felt like it wasn't a bad price. 5th Avenue has some cool stuff and definitely negotiate prices.
-I got sick the first night, but I don't think it was the hotel because my wife didn't get sick. I was on a very strict diet for about 3 months with no alcohol prior to the trip so having the rich food and alcohol probably made me sick. Take some pepto or other stomach medicine just in case. We had to call a doctor and she charged about $200 for the visit and meds and this is probably a good amount of emergency cash to have. Don't let me getting sick turn you off. I just want you to be prepared.
-We waited until the last couple of days to tip the servers and bartenders. Instead of leaving small tips each day, we found that giving bigger tips to servers that stood out a little easier. Just don't wait until the last day because you might miss someone who is off work the last couple of days of your trip.
We will definitely be going back. I'm not sure how soon it will be because we want to visit some other countries, but the next time we go to Mexico, we will stay at the Blue Diamond.
The Palafitos or beachfront rooms are the best because they are closes to the beach, which has a bar...
