“Another fabulous vacation at the Riu Palace Mexico”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

We just got back from our third vacation to the Riu Palace Mexico. What a fabulous resort! The staff is absolutely the best, the food gets better every year, and the hotel is spotless! This year they added retractable sun shades around the pools, which are terrific. We can hardly wait until we go back next year. There is no place that i would rather go!

Visited Palace Mexico for two weeks in Feb. 2014. Was our anniversary, searched for best rated resort within our price range and due to the recent renovation we selected this one.

We are highly experience travelers and enjoy fine dining restaurants regularly.

The good: great beach, well decorated and size of rooms, well stocked with water soft drink, and liquor. Very clean and well maintained resort and grounds. Chrystal and steak house restaurants are good, all mornings and most nights buffet is good .If you like to drink alcohol this is the resort for you.

The bad: Food: Buffett Mexican and Mediterranean sections were insulting, very bland and poorly executed dishes, in general meats are not tenderized and generally overcooked. Lunch in only served at snack bar rear beach, grilled food and salad sections are best option, Italian, Sushi and Mexican are below standard.
Of the a la cart restaurants we tried, the Italian average, visited Mexican restaurant on day 5, we got food poisoning so I would give it very poor.

After being sick for 2-3 days my wife and I attempted to see the manager but she was busy, we were approached the Ramon the assistant manager, we explained our food poising situation, he listened, asked what we ate and when we arrived names and room number, stated he was going to investigate, At no time did he offer an apology, appear concerned or offer any once of concern or any humanity gestures given the circumstances we found ourselves due to his restaurants doing. That was the last we heard from him, we saw him on multiple occasions and he simple ignored us as though nothing had ever happened.
Needless to say, our anniversary was spent rear and around a toilet after selecting a so called 5 star resort.
The biggest disappointment besides the fact that we both got food poisoning , was that we approached management with a serious situation and we were ignored.
We do not recommend this hotel simply because we lost confidence in the management of this hotel; and strongly feel that should something happen to you are on your own.

Returned to this hotel after 7 years and it was just as good as the first time, in fact better now that it has been refurbished. The staff are so friendly and helpful and can't do enough to help. As returners, we were regularly being asked (both verbally and in writing) if we were happy with everything and to let them know immediately if there were any problems. For Valentine's Day we received a bottle of bubbly and 2 champagne glasses in the room, together with a note wishing us a lovely day.

The bedroom was a good size with plenty of drawer and wardrobe space, a wall mounted TV with adequate English channels and a large comfortable bed. The room was open plan and included a Jacuzzi bath and separate shower, with 'his and hers' sinks and twin mirrors.

The variety and quality of daily buffet food was fabulous, as was the food in the 5 specialty restaurants. The new 24 hour (restricted) buffet service was so convenient too, just for a snack and a drink. All of the drinks were first class (especially the cocktails) and included premium brands.
We found all members of staff to be polite, friendly and helpful but some were outstanding, particularly Daniel in the piano bar and Santiago in the buffet restaurant. Others, whose names we didn't catch were also extremely helpful.

The beach is good with plenty of available sunbeds most of the time but the sea can be a little rough at times, although quite warm. Unfortunately a number of people put towels on sunbeds early in the morning to reserve them for the day and didn't use them until much later, despite requests not to do so but management didn't follow this up.
Late afternoons the pool bar became a little noisy as drinkers became boisterous from the alcohol but generally it was all in good humour.

Overall we can't fault this hotel, we think it is great.

Room Tip: Pay extra to have a room overlooking the fountains, they're much better than those overlooking t...

The hotel is awesome. We choose it because it was walking distance to the town. But in 14 days we only went in there twice! It is really pleasant at the hotel area!
We especially enjoyed the wild life to be seen. Lots of birds and animals. Close to the pool-area there was a pair of Iguana-lizard (One meter from head to tail!) living. The male often sat in the tree just above your head.
All meals are fantastic, good vines and beer, fantastic drinks and Martinis, so we ended up with a couple of extra kilos on our way back home ;)
Some rooms - ours as well the first days, (and also the Krystal and the japanese rest.) had an unpleasant smell! You have to wash everything when you come home!

Room Tip: We had room 1099, on the first floor, with a large balcony in the shadow in the afternoon - good wi...

Our stay was to celebrate Valentines and winter get away. Being our first time at this resort and in Playa Car, we were surprised to find the Playa Car village was a completely gated and secure community that was safe to walk outside the walls of the Riu.

Upon arrival our first impression was no regrets, we picked a great resort. Easy to check in and a short time to get to our room.

Room - is a semi open concept with a private toilet, frosted glass shower, and a curtain to separate all bathroom amenities from the sleeping area, this was not a problem for us. Also a well stocked refrigerator with water, soda, and Dos Equis beer. Coffee and a tea maker was included. A wall mounted liquor dispenser with Bacardi, Jose Quervo, Smirnoff, and brandy was plentiful. The bed could have been a bit softer but it was not uncomfortable. The sitting area with a couch and private balcony wasa nice touch.

Pools - there are 4 pools to choose from with plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. The central pool is were the swim up bar was. All are close to the lunch buffet area.

Beach - a clean white sand beach lined with palm trees for shade if you prefer not to sit in direct sun light and plenty of lounge chairs.

Food - lunch and dinner buffets are plentiful. They have absolutely all food choices for any diet. We dined A La Carte 3 evenings, Mexican, Japanese, and Fusion. All were very good but I would vote the Mexican as the best since they had multiple regional choices throughout the meal. A 24 hour lounge is a great touch for those who need a snack, beer, wine, coffee, or deserts on off times. In addition they have a coffee café area near the main lobby. Also they have a daily BBQ on the beach.

Bars - the pool bar and lobby bar is convenient with full drink menus. I did not find the drinks watered down but if you want an extra splash just ask. Top shelf liquor was available.

Service - there is no shortage of people wanting to please you. Waiter, waitresses, and bartenders, ensure you are attended to. Maids keep your room clean daily. They all deserve to be tipped.

Property - this place is super clean and well maintained. manicuring and cleaning continues daily. The Riu is a 2 mile walk (30 minutes) or a 7 dollar taxi ride to Playa Del Carmen 5th Ave if you would like to shop.

Our last impression was no regrets, we picked a great resort. I would come back here anytime.

This was our first visit to a Rui hotel and The Rui Palace Mexico was a nice break away!
The check in was easy and luggage was brought quickly to our ground floor Junior Suite over looking the Court yard.
By reading the other reviews, there was mention of noise on the bottom floor. There was definitely some ( I really hope the lady in the next room looks into quitting smoking and looks after her harsh cough).
I must say we slept well overall after a day of sun and excellent food and drinks.
The grounds are impeccable. The rooms were very clean and in good repair. The staff were very friendly and most could speak passable English.
I found the food to be outstanding in the buffet. I love seafood and there was no disappointment in selection. On the other hand my husband did not fair out as well as he is some what a picky eater. His comment was that the salad dressings were not well marked so you weren't quite sure which one you were having. The buns were dried out for the hamburgers. The grill at the beach was a nice touch.
I enjoyed the steak and lobster at the Steak house. We didn't like the idea of the reservation having to be made first thing at the bar. If you weren't there by 8:30 am, it was quite possible you would not get your first choice. There was two sittings 6:30 and 8:30. A 7:30 sitting would have been better for our liking but it didn't make or break the holiday. Not a fan of the the Italian Restaurant but it may have been my choice of Ravioli. I have had better out of a can. Very bland.
There was no problem finding chairs at the beach or pool. The beach had few weeds and was otherwise very clean and safe. We enjoyed long walks both ways each day. It is an easy 20-30 minute walk to town by beach or by road. Always felt safe and was not hounded by vendors either way. On the other hand the vendors in Playa Del Carmen are a bit bothersome but most take a simple "no thank you".
The pools are just OK. I love the pools that you can walk around through the resorts. These 4 pools are somewhat small. We did not go into the pool that had the bar. There was tables in that pool and some visitors would perch themselves on the chair and had never leave??? Drinking and smoking and never leaving?... We stayed on the dry land side.
The wait staff was unbelievable! We always took large cups to resorts as it was sometimes hard to get another drink. These people were there before you could finish. There was always staff delivering large trays of drinks to the beach. You just had to pick out what you wanted.
We took a day and went by ferry to Cozumel. It was $26 return each. We were going to rent a car but decided on a taxi for the same price($70 for 2 1/2 hour and it could have been longer)The driver was knowledgable about his home land and we were taken to the places we were interested in seeing. There was a lot of people taking scooters that had never been on one before. Not smart as dental work is expensive and so are broken bones!
We cannot comment about the entertainment on the resort as we are early to bed, early to rise people so didn't capture the shows and the noise did not keep us up.
We wandered into to the other Riu hotels. I would think the Mayan Rivera Palace would also be a good selection.
The resort had many British, European, South and North Americans. It was a real melting pot. Mostly older crowd but there was families with young children. We experienced a wedding on the lawn while we were there. Nicely set up and the bride look beautiful on Valentines Day.
We received delivered to our room chocolate dipped strawberries with other homemade chocolates and a note from the Executive Chef. Also received champagne another night, wishing us a happy valentines. The rooms were decorated with rose petals , Hersey kisses, towel creations.
Enough said....go enjoy yourselves!
Just don't book with Sunwing.... 3 hour delay on the way down and 11 hour delay on way back with no real explanation. Nothing like ruining a rest by sleeping on the floor in a freezing cold Cancun airport!

My husband and I took a long, overdue couple's vacation. The Riu Palace Mexico was absolutely the perfect place to reconnect. We had a very clean room with staff that continually restocked our fridge, linens, and gave us privacy when requested. The restaurants had food choices from around the globe. One could only go hungry by choice as there was so much to choose from. The service provided was superb. An empty plate was removed quickly and beverages were refilled in moments...even in the buffet restaurants. Bar and lounge service was also great. The staff rotated between bars and restaurants and remembered guests and their preferences from one place to the next. Front desk staff was helpful and friendly. So much of the staff throughout the resort was multilingual making it fun for everyone. Although we chose to leave our children at home this time, there were families vacationing as well. The activities staff had plenty of fun activities for the adults as well as the children. The night entertainment was fun too. We took a little time to check out the other Riu properties in the area and found them to offer similar amenities. We did use the Wi-Fi included in the price which would have been an additional charge at some resorts. The beach area was well maintained as were the pools and manicured grounds. All-in-all, we enjoyed a wonderful time at this hotel/resort. We are ready to go back again next year!
