“We enjoyed it!!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

My husband and I stayed at Riu Tequila 10/6-10/11. It was a short, but enjoyable stay.

The Good:
-The staff are super friendly and accommodating. Being that my husband and I were one of the few couples from the United States everyone remembered our name and took great care of us. My favorite staff were Martin at the pool bar, Jose at the main bar, and Lili- hotel entertainment staff. Also, my husband's luggage got delayed at the airport and the staff were very helpful in assisting us to get it delivered to the hotel.
-Bartenders kept the drinks flowing. Drinks are pretty weak, but all you have to do is order a shot with it and you're good. Also, tip them- they work hard for very little pay.
-The pool was never overcrowded and we could always get a good spot.
- The staff cleaned constantly. The bathrooms in the lobby and sports bar were impeccable. Even though the rooms are a tad bit dated ours was spotless.
-Free wifi in the hotel lobby- this came in handy for posting pics on Instagram and checking Facebook.
- While I didn't eat most things on the buffet because they didn't appeal to my taste buds, there were plenty options each meal to choose from. I believe everyone could find something to satisfy their appetite.
- It's an easy walk to the beach and if you're lazy or tired, the hotel shuttle (actually a golf cart) runs back and forth to the beach every 5 minutes.
- Access to the Yucatan across the street which has a gym and (at least in my opinion) a slightly younger, hipper crowd. I enjoyed lounging by their pool.
- Plenty of activities. I've stayed at other all- inclusive resorts and this has to be the hardest working entertainment staff I have ever seen.

The Bad:
-Bathroom towels were rough- I didn't mind, but my husband hated them.
-Late night food options are minimal to none. The only food available after 10:30PM is in refrigerators in the sports bar. I tried a hamburger and it made me sick.
- There is no room service.
- Coatis (sp?)- the wildlife that inhabit the resort. They weren't necessarily bad, but they're just everywhere so be prepared to have them follow you at night LOL.
- Poorly lit paths- I'm a little afraid of the dark and would have appreciated better lighting on the paths to the rooms.

In summary, this is a great hotel for the price. It is not 5 star and does not advertise itself as such so don't expect that upon arrival. If you want a 5 star experience, stay at the Palace across the street. If you want an enjoyable vacation on a budget, you will love this resort.

Flew with Thomson on Dreamliner, flight 10.5 hours, comfortable, plenty of leg room, food horrendous so make sure you take some snacks. Arrived in Cancun airport, had to wait 90 minutes for bus to leave airport for hotel destination transfer takes 50 mins. When we arrived at the hotel check in was very quick, they had our rooms keys waiting and there was bell boys waiting for your cases, once delivered (they will wait for a tip) The hotel provides you with one room key with the biggest key ring I have ever seen, this is uncomfortable to keep in your pocket. The room was large, it had a very bad smell of damp, the rooms are dark, but basic essentials were there, the bedding and towels all smelt of damp too. The room was clean though. The room had two double beds, a small fridge which is stocked every other day, all beverages are free in the room, but not branded, Vodka was like paint stripper. The room has a large wardrobe with plenty of hanging space and also sufficient draws. The rooms were always cleaned daily, but sometimes not until 5pm which was annoying because it interrupted our siesta time. The toilet and shower are separate, there is no light in the shower and can be dark. There was an issue with the bathroom light, it was flickering and we couldn’t see properly, it took 3 days for this to be resolved. Beach towels are provided, again poor condition, stained and smelt of food. The beach is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel, it is kept very nice, plenty of sunbeds and shaded areas if required, you don’t get any hassle from the beach sellers, you can also use the Playacar and Yucatan facilities for lunch, snacks and drinks. You can also walk into Playacar, small shopping centre within 2 minutes, there is a Starbucks with free WIFI. Also you can walk into Playa Carmen the main town area within 20 mins, nice walk, nice shops, you get hassled a lot but best ignore when walking through the flea market, if you decide to buy anything please don’t go with the original price, try and come to an agreement, designer shops are very expensive and you can get cheaper in UK. Silver is reasonable though. In playa Carmen there is a wide variety of restaurants and bars if you fancied a change from the hotel, its perfectly safe but you have to be street wise.
The food in general was not the best nowhere near 5*, breakfast was basic, the usual fruits, cereals, breads and a cooked breakfast which was of poor quality, majority of food was cold and you had to wait for food to be refilled. Lunch was at the snack bar by the pool, exactly the same every day, burgers, hot dogs, salads, fries and pizza, this was also cold mostly because the food had been out for so long, Soft drinks are available on a self-service basis and alcohol at the pool bar. There is also a Sports Bar which is 24 hours, best place to chill (Good air-con) there are also sandwiches free in the fridges. You can also use all facilities at the Yucatan or Playa Car. Yucatan is all brand new, however in the lunch restaurant there is a bad smell of sewage which can put you off. The buffet restaurant in the evening isn’t very good either, there is no waiter service (unless you tip or are Spanish) You find your own table and get your drinks from the self service, the evening meal consists of meats, fries, potatoes, salads, soups, most nights there was something to eat, food again was cold and you had to queue for fresh food. The table cloths were dirty on occasions too. One night there was a RIU quality manager handing out questionnaires on that particular night the waiter service was outstanding (Funny that). There is also a dessert counter, Ice-cream was available but the freezers were filthy and had not been cleaned.
The entertainment was ok, the team are very focused in making sure that you have a good time, but they are very in your face, especially around the pool and at night time. The best shows were the ones that were brought in from outside, such as, The Mexican Show and Circus Show. There is also a nightclub on the complex which is worth a visit. The kids show starts at 8.30pm-9.30pm (same most evenings) Evening entertainment finishes at 10.30pm, nothing provided after.
The pool areas were large, plenty of sun loungers in shade and sun, however they have a problem with Coates (Racoon type animals) there are literally hundreds of them, they are quite tame and friendly, the first few days we found them interesting to watch, however, they will steal your drinks and cause carnage if you leave your bags open by the pool because they will eat anything sweet. These are also running around the snack bar jumping on tables eating the left-over food that hadn’t been cleaned away, the snack bar also has birds flying everywhere. There is a swim up bar in the pool where the same people tended to stay getting drunk, using bad language and on occasions vomiting in the pool (Not acceptable) At this hotel there were a lot of gangs of youngsters, getting drunk, loud shouting, swearing and nothing was done about this.
Thomson provides a number of trips, which are quite expensive. We went to Chichin Itza priced £140 for the two of us through Thomson. This was a good trip the guide was outstanding, there is food included but I suggest you pack a lunch, the trip felt rushed but well worth it.
To conclude if Riu upgraded the Tequila and provided better customer service training for their staff it would improve dramatically - because this hotel has a lot of potential. You get what you pay for and this is the cheapest option.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms are better and end room ideal - corner room

The best hotel ever- Riu Tequila in Mexico :)
Any drink, any food :) Still remember beautiful beach with palms and white sand :))
I wish everyone to go there and to feel that.
Our flight was delay by 18 hours so we had extra night for free. Thank you Thomson :)

Room Tip: Any room next to reception.

We took our two boys in end of aug begin of September, for two weeks and had two days of sun the rest just threw it down with rain,it was a real disappointment. We loved the food as there was something different we found each nite we liked so for people to slag of the food is shocking, rooms was ok,nothing exciting, entertainment was ok bit cheesy but ok, the down falls I would say on this holiday were a lot of Spanish and Germans dead nosy and being sick all round the pool area wasn't nice, also if your taking hair straighteners sometimes they don't work, plus my husbands hair clippers dint work iver.the drinks are watered down so always ask for doubles, and the sports bar food I wouldn't have it as it's old food from leftovers. Defo recommend the pirate ship with don't it twice now and loved it both times, and Xcaret was good and have been there twice now to. Mozzie well they ate me alive so just be carefull of them, and we loved the little creatures there like ant eater looking things part from knocking are drinks over all the time, found a few of the staff members quite rude, and we didn't have our room cleaned everyday iver . But overall we would go back as the kids loved it, just hope it gets a bit of a freshen up be for we do decide. Defo go the beach aswell or 5th ave both are well worth the look.

We have just spent 2 weeks in this hotel and to be honest the place is very dated the rooms although clean needed a lot of updating done to them, the lighting was a joke, found it impossible to read at night, even to get ready to go out, the lighting was poor. We understand that the Tequila is the next hotel to get a make over, in our mind not a moment to soon. The staff were excellent, other than the waiters at the steak restaurant, who really needed to go to charm school!!! The meal was rushed and not all that nice, the whole evening was awful. We actually was disappointed with the food on a whole, the butter was no better than stork margarine which I use in cooking! yuk on a slice of toast. This hotel needs a lot of improvements in our opinion, we won't be returning.
