“All staff in every department friendly and obliging”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2010

Just returned from 11 nights at this hotel. I'll try not to repeat recent reviews and let you know things perhaps omitted or different.
We spent most days on the beach. Once or twice there was a drinks service offered on the beach. Once a week at lunchtime there was food and drink served outside at the entrance to the beach.
Food was excellent. I didn't speak to anyone with an upset tummy. We tried all 3 speciality restaurants. Enjoyed them all. The buffet was excellent. There were about 24 tables outside on a verrandah. We always sat there. We were always served our drinks and coffee.
There were a couple of cats that visited but they were no problem. Occassionally there were geckos on the ceiling here. When I say outside there was a high roof.
In the Asian you could have deep fried ice cream for dessert.
There are no tea making facilities in the room but there are Nescafe coffee machines which were tempermental. Also in the restaurant near the beach you could help yourself to Nachos and popcorn
We asked for diet pepsi in our fridge and they were happy to provide this.
We had a whole day of rain. They did everything to amuse us. They put up gaming tables in the lobby and moved the table tennis table there to. The was a book exchange by the towel shack at the pool and they moved these too. They also produced all sorts of board games.
The shower was very efficient. I dislike the little sachets of shampoo and shower gel but that was my only complaint about the room. We were on the top floor of the pink block nearest the pool and the sea overlooking the next hotel and found it perfect. Sunny balcony in th morning.
If you want something from the evening stalls every few nights do so as they are packing up to get a bargain. We never had a problem getting a sun bed but we are early birds.
We lunched in the Tequila and Yucatan and had pre dinner drinks in them too,We preferred our hotel only because it was smaller. You can also have lunch at the beach club of the Riu Lupita which is up the beach the other direction.
We walked the road into town. It was about 30mins at a leisurely pace. There is a Walmart there but we didn't buy anything. I'm sure it would be great for value if you were not all inclusive. Oh, and the great bed debate. We didn't ask for a topper, the mattress did have a thin quilty cover. It was firm but very comfortable. Enjoy, I wish I was still there

This was our 8th trip to this part of Mexico and without a doubt the staff at the Riu Playacar are the friendliest and most efficient we've encountered anywhere. Whether interacting with guests or each other, they were just a happy bunch. That can go a long way towards making an enjoyable experience for all.

Rooms are comfortable and spotless. I witnessed a housekeeping supervisor running a finger around the outside of the sliding glass door to check for dust! Even the balconies were immaculate. The rooms appeared to have been recently updated. Bathrooms were spacious and the toilets were another "best in the RM". If you've visited Mexico before then you know how hit and miss that can be. Updated toilets and sewer systems are a definite luxury! Another resort just a stone's throw away still has a "no paper in the toilet" policy.

Taste in food can be very subjective but we thought it was delicious overall. Lots of variety and something for everyone! It was better than most we've had in the area. The meats were seasoned and cooked perfectly, for the most part, which is a rarity! Drinks are the typical AI fare, which is to say they aren't great, but the margaritas on Mexican night in the buffet were delicious, so they can make a good one when they want to ;-)

The beach is gorgeous, with lots of palapas and not much shade and the pools are adequate (nothing spectacular) with lots of both. They don't have poolside or beachside service per se but staff members make the rounds offering drinks, ice cream and fresh fruit on a regular basis which is a nice touch.

Overall a great little resort, just the perfect size, with amazing employees. We'll be back!

I stayed at the Riu Playacar in February of 2009. I went down with a girlfriend of mine. We had a fantastic time! I did a quick breakdown of the hotel:

Check In:
Quick, efficient, friendly...just what we wanted after 5+ hours of travelling!

Food:
The buffet was delicious! I didn't do any of the A La Cartes, but the buffet was always plentiful. The food was hot, and there was plenty to go around! It was always being re-filled with fresh food, it was always nice and hot! The drinks were always well mixed, ice cold and the staff actually made what you asked for.

Beach:
LOVED the beach! It was very large, beautiful soft sand and lots of place to set out your chair and relax! Ocean was a bit choppy, but nothing you can do about that, plus, I love the waves!

Rooms:
The rooms were very nice. I found the beds to be very comfortable. It was roomy, the balcony was great and I always found there to be enough hot water. :)

Overall I absolutly loved my stay at Riu. Great staff + beautiful hotel + amazing location = fantastic vacation!

Once I got there, I knew it was going to be great. The people on the reception were incredibly nice and helpful, always with a smile on their faces. When we went to dinner, the staff would come and talk to us, see if everything was ok and asking us where we were from, when were we leaving, etc.
The rooms were nice and big, although the bathroom didn't have a door, only a curtain. The rooms were always very clean and cool because of the air conditioner. We stayed at the green building, the one furthest to the beach, which was nice, because it was far from the confusion and noise.
The food was great, especially in the breakfast, such great variety. The pool area was super fun, music all day with activities, and the animation staff were incredible, super fun, as we would sometimes go to the bar and drink tequila, including the people who worked at the bar! Also I loved the pool bar!
The animation at night wasn't anything special for me, but it depends on the taste (we watched Mariachi, Maya Show, etc).
The beach was not full at all and it was pretty peaceful and quiet.
Also great discos in the Fifth Avenue, not so far away from the hotel.

I would SO want to come back there! And from the other RIU's I saw (Tequila, Lupita and Yucatan) this looked definitly the best.

Hotel:- excellent facilities, food and service. Location is ideal and right on the beach. Note there are no parasols on the beach just palm trees for shelter. The restaurant/bar/lobby areas are good and the service at front desk and everywhere around the hotel was excellent. The place is keep very clean and tidy and everyone takes great pride in what they do.

Food:- Good choice with mixed menu to suit and cater for all nationalities. We always found something different to eat during our 2 week stay.

Water:- Not convinced of the quality of the water in the hotel for drinking as both my wife and I suffered with upset stomachs for a number of days. Stick to bottled water from the start including brushing teeth.

Drinks:- Whilst freely available I would suggest caution as far are cocktails particularly when mixtures of cream based ingredients are added. The heat and humidity are high enough for concern when it comes to cream/milk based products.

Weather:- We visited between 19 June to 3 July and whilst the temperature was bearable, the humidity did make it feel very uncomfortable. Best time to visit would probably be in the high season around Jan/Feb. Also we encountered a tropical storm (Alex) which lasted for 4 days and made it difficult to get around. You can always borrow an umbrella from the front desk.

Site seeing:- We visited Chichen Itza which was an interesting trip. Our guide was amazing (Rex) who had a wealth of knowledge and experience. A word of caution though, if you are visiting this great site particularly during the hot months, it gets very hot over 100F and there is not much shelter. Luckily our tour guide had arranged for umbrellas which were extremely useful to protect from the direct sun. People have been reported to faint due to the heat. Also wear suitable clothing to cover the neck and shoulder and take insect spray as there are horse flies which have quite a painful bite.

Xcaret :- This was another amazing place we visited and thoroughly enjoyed it. Be aware that the tour operators will sell you the full day’s package at around $99 per person which includes entrance and lunch. You can take the halve day option which we did and it worked out to $69 per person. There is an evening show which starts at 7pm if you like seeing traditional Mexican dancing. If you using a taxi to get back to your hotel, then buy your return taxi voucher just before the entrance to the park so that later on once the show finishes you don’t have to queue.

Taxis:- All around the resort there are excellent taxi services and from most hotels there are taxis waiting outside to take you around. From the Riu Playacar to Play del Carmen it is a $5 or 50 pesos ride to 5th Avenue. Here there are all the typical shops catering for tourists. You can also get a very good exchange rate to change $, £ or Euro into pesos. Probably better rate than most hotels will offer.

Airport:- At departure two things to be aware of. A tax levy of $110 or £38 per person is payable so make sure you have some money left over. Also for folks travelling to UK, if you exceed your baggage allowance of 20KG there will be a charge imposed of $20/kilo. You can carry drinks (water) including any local liquor in your hand luggage even before you go through to security so don’t add any additional weight to your main bags by having liquor in you main case. Also carry shoes etc in your hand luggage to avoid being over the baggage limits.

Hope this has been a useful review for all going to Mexico. It is a beautiful country to experience in every way.

We stayed at the Riu Playacar June 16 - 26. I'm not sure where to begin. The resort has so much to offer. When we first arrived at the hotel we were greeted with a friendly "hola" and a welcome drink. "Check- in" was quick and easy. We got there around 11:00 a.m. and "check-in" wasn't until 3:00 but they had our room ready within an hour. They took our bags up to the second floor. We stayed in a junior suite in the pink building which overlooks the pool and has a view of Cozumel. The room was very pretty. We had a large swan towel animal on the bed swimming in rose petals when we got there. There was a large sitting area across from the bed with a sofa and chair. It was decorated very nice. There's a big walk in closet with six large cubes to stack your stuff in. This came in very handy since I brought too much stuff. The bathroom is nice with his and her sinks and a bathtub shower. There's also a refrigerator stocked with soda, beer and plenty of bottled water. They refill the refrigerator every 2 days but if you run out all you have to do is buzz the front desk and they'll bring you more. There's also a stocked bar above the refrigerator. Our cleaning lady was wonderful. She kept the room spotless and left us a different towel animal everyday. There's 2 large lagoon type pools at the resort. One is the quiet pool and the other one has a swim up bar with plenty of entertainment and games. We went back and forth between the two pools. There are a lot of actvities going on around the resort . They had 2 beach barbecues, swimsuit fashion show, cocktail class (lots of fun! - lots of drinks!), horseshoes, rifle shooting, ping pong, tennis, tequila volleyball, drinking games, scuba lessons, water aerobics and lots more. The beaches are beautiful. White sand and turquoise blue water You can walk all the way to Playa Del Carmen on the beach. It's breathtaking! They have jet ski's, parasailing, canoes, paddleboats and sailboats at the beach. There's also plenty of chairs at the beach and pools. The food is really good with LOTS to choose from. Lunch is served near the pool area and breakfast and dinner are up by the front lobby. They also have an Asian restaurant and a steak house. Our favorite was breakfast. French toast (yum), omelets (stuffed with ham and cheese), bacon and sausage, cereals, muffins and donuts, huge fruit bar and lots of fresh juices. Too much to name and sooo good! Good variety to choose from at lunch too. Dinner was different every night. They had Mexico night and Asian night at the buffet while we were there. At Asian night you can get the best sushi. They had 9 different types to chose from and oh so good. They always have a pasta station and a Mexican food station set up no matter which night you're there. There's lots of comfort food (potatoes and sauces and fried foods), lots of healthy food (grilled chicken, grilled fish/seafood, salad and fruit bars) and lots of foods in between (seafood, roast pig, roast beef, soups. If you can't find anything to eat then there's something wrong with you. Now to the staff - They're fantastic! Alexxx and Dani will joke around with you at the bars and make you the best drinks. If you need more alcohol in your drink, don't complain - just ask. They'll do you up right. Be sure and ask for the electric lemonade. The bar tenders work very hard and they really have a lot of fun with everyone. You'll make friends with them the first day. The animacion team is unbelieveable! (A big shoutout to Super Chuie) They not only entertain everyone with the games throughout the day but they also put together the shows at night. There's a Michael Jackson show, a Burlesque show, a crazy couples show (we had to get on stage for this one - don't be shy!), Mayan show etc. You need to see each show at least one time - it's worth it. The staff at this resort is by far the best I've seen. They really want you to have a good time. WE LOVED OUR VACATION! A big hello to our friends from Holland and our Boston "Bwoston" friends :)
