“Love the character of this smaller resort”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

My husband and I (retirees) specifically returned to this resort as it offers most everything people in general are looking for in resort with a flair above average. It offers the mature character of an older seasoned resort which carters to the happiness and welfare of their clients. The grounds are beautifully kept. We enjoy the "tame" wildlife often seen around the resort. The choice and quality of food was a much higher grade that more expensive resorts that we have stayed at in the Mayan Riveria. The buffet room offers a large covered terrace seating area where we enjoyed are breakfacts. Lots of daily activites to select from. Often daily arts, craft and cooking displays happen around the pool during the day. Clean and sandy beach. Short 15-20 minute walk into Playa del Carmen and the local Mayan ruins along the beach area. Small shopping mall across the street with a Starbucks and internet cafe.

Spacious rooms with balconies are very clean and maintained, although a bit dated in appearance. In room bar and fridge. Lots of storage room for clothes and luggage so you are not living out of a suitcase as in some resorts.

Live nightly entertainment at their theatre, as well as, in the lobby before their big evening theatre show.

Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Great value for the price. Diffinetly would return again.

Room Tip: There are 3 accommodation buildings facing each other on each side of the main walkway between the m...

Love staying here. I have stayed at nicer resorts but I still prefer the Riu Playacar, when I look at the big picture. The rooms are dated and beds uncomfortable but you can get a mattress pad makes it much better. How much time are you in your room I could have cared less that it was dated. It is a smaller resort so you are able to get a seat at the bar and never wait for anything you get what you want when you want it and with great service. You do not have to walk far to get to anything. The beach is amazing, go to another resort lets say across the street, that means you need to cross the street to go to the beach I'm not a fan of doing that. Compared to other resorts in the same area the riu playacar has the largest beach front and cleanest. A few years back after a major storm destroyed some of the beach this resort spent some money to restore there beach and made it even better. The food is bar far not fine dining but it is not bad at all. There is something for everyone including children plus they will do a lot of made to order all you have to do is ask. We did hop to other resorts I believe it was the tequila that had a nice sports bar that we enjoyed it was during hockey playoff so my husband was happy. What I disliked about the tequila was it was larger and I went to there main bar which was 4 to 5 people deep so getting a drink took some time. Yes the tequila was much more updated it is newer, I still prefer the convenience of the riu playacar. It had the same food as it sister resorts. I have been 6 times to Playa del Carmen coming up on # 7 and this will be my 4th at riu playacar. I will never try another resort (unless something were to go really bad) because this place has everything important to me for a great vacation at a very reasonable price. If you are looking for fancy this is not the place. If you are looking for relaxing fun with great service without any kind of a wait this is your place.

Room Tip: I like building 5 and 6 its close to the beach. If you want to be away from the noise of the lounge...

Just returned from this resort. 2nd time there and it was wonderful! Check in was easy, my room was very nice. Small resort which I like. Easy to get around, 2 pools, one with swim up bar. My 2 favorite things..the beach is great and there are PLENTY of chaises. No need to run out and reserve one..2nd..the food is awesome!!!!! I travel a lot and there food in especiaaly the buffets is great. Weather was mid 90's, not one drop of rain, sunny, sunny sunny...here is the sad part. This resort will be leveled next April and a new Riu built in it's place,,a Palace style...when things are good why can't they be left alone? It is such a wonderful cozy Mexican flair resort..wish they would leave it as is but...go now before ..don't hesitate..it will be gone!

Room Tip: there are only 3 buildings on each side of the walkway..total of 6...you can't go wrong with any...

Stayed from 29th March - 13th April and after a long flight and just over an hour of a transfer we had arrived. At reception we were met with a cool drink and many warm smiles from the staff on duty. The warmth and friendliness of these lovely people never faltered the whole 2 weeks we were there. An amazing staff throughout this hotel!
Rooms are nice and clean although a bit dated and we had no problem with the beds being too hard. We slept well every night. The food was amazing and the chefs and kitchen staff work sooo hard. We found the buffet to be best and enjoyed all the food which was beautifully presented daily. Something for everyone I'd say. No skimpy measures at the bars either and your room drinks service is replenished every 2 days. Can't comment on evening entertainment as we never went to any but comments from others suggested that it was mostly acceptable and enjoyable.
The beach is lovely and clean and the sea most days wasn't too choppy. Again, can't comment on the pool as we prefer the beach but it always looked lovely and clean any time we passed.
Not far into Playa del Carmen and costs 70 pesos in a taxi. A big shout out to all the Canadians we met. A good laugh! If you do decide to come here you will not be disappointed and we'd once again like to thank all staff at this hotel for making our stay an enjoyable, memorable one.

Just returned from a fantastic 2 weeks stay at the Riu Playacar.

BEACH

The beach is wide and beautiful. There are plenty of loungers and you can be in the sun or shade no matter of time you go. The ocean is warm and has a sandy bottom anywhere you swim.

POOLS

The swimming pools are on the small side but the water is warm. In the quiet pool, you can get a lounger is the sun or shade at any time of the day. There is no need for people to save loungers.

FOOD

The food is excellent and plentiful. Every day you have numerous choices.

ROOMS

There are 6 buildings, all 3 stories high. The rooms are dated especially the bathroom. We spent so little time in the room, this is a minor point. The room was cleaned completely to our satisfaction every day.

STAFF

The staff are friendly, always have a smile and will assist you in any way they can. A special mention to Froy and Abraham in the lobby bar. They are very friendly and hard-working individuals.

Also, a special mention to Israel who is part of the Animation Staff. Not only did he draw a map showing us where we could get the authentic Mexican shopping experience but he also offered to take us there on his day off. This is above and beyond the call of duty.

It is unfortunate Riu is tearing this hotel down to erect a Grand Palace as we definitely would have returned.

Thank you Riu Playacar for a fabulous 2 week vacation.

I cannot say enough great things about our week at RIU Playa Car! Service was Fantastic! Food was outstanding and a huge choice at every meal! Anyone who complains wouldn't be happy anywhere! There was so much to choose from. My husband and I celebrated our 24th anniversary during our stay and RIU left a gift in our room, it was really nice of them to recognize our special day! We spent our week relaxing, eating and drinking. Got to meet wonderful people from all over the world. We also enjoyed talking with employees and getting to know them, as well. We will visit again! Thank you for a spectacular week!

My family and I stayed here for two weeks from the 29th March. From the moment we stepped foot in the hotel the staff could not do enough to help you! They are always working so hard. A special mention to Karen on Reception who greeted us with the warmest welcome. The hotel has a strong Authentic Mexican theme throughout. The rooms were lovely, plenty of space and spotless. The beds were comfortable (don't understand all the moans on here about them being hard!) The beach is out of this world!!!! There are always plenty of sunbeds available around the pool and beach, it never looks crowded. There are two pools, one for entertainment and the other is quiet. These are also lovely. The food and drinks were excellent, so much choice. The waiters are the nicest people you could meet (special mention to Carlos, Rodiber, Tomas and Hector!). If we were to return to this area, I would choose the Riu Playacar in a second!
