This was our first trip to Mexico and it couldn't have been greater! We loved this resort. It was very clean, the staff is hardworking and very friendly. The beach is spectacular. We walked for an hour every morning. The location is awesome as we could take a nice walk to town either by beach or road. We also visited Xel-Ha which was only about a 45 minute trip away. I was never worried about our safety, even outside the resort. The rooms have a safe to keep valuables so you don't have to worry. Housekeeping was always very pleasant, hardworking and did a great job cleaning the room. The grounds are plush and jungle-like so it was very relaxing. Two staff members made our stay great, Wilberth and Armando. Willy is so personable and cute! Everytime he sees you he has a smile, greets you and talks. He just draws you in with his charisma. Armando was our bartender in the lobby. He is also hardworking and funny and gives great service at the bar. He cracked us up! We got pictures with both of them before we left. Food overall was very good. We plan to come back someday and we will stay right here again!! Thank you to all the staff for a great stay! Scott & Suzy

Room Tip: Second and third floors offer more privacy.

I read reviews for a month before booking the Reef Playacar. As with all reviews everyone has a different opinion on good and bad and in between. We have been to Mexico 12 times staying a different resort all but once. The Reef Playacar was as good as many we have stayed at. The rooms were a little old, beds a little hard, good pillows, balcony, good air con. , large bathroom, mini fridge, T.V.room safe $ was an antique but was fine once we got onto it., and kept clean by our girl Liz. Food was better than most all inclusives, some meals were excellent. The bars and banos accessible, snack bar at the beach was easy, ice cream parlour delicious. Staff we met were all fun, helpful, pleasant and happy. The beach is a 6 star. The grounds are very jungle like, easy to navigate, very well kept; a nice property if youre looking for Mexico on a small scale. I do not like the mega hotels with 1000 rooms spread out like a small city. We chose this place because it was small and user friendly. We took 3 young adults ( girls) and there was not really much for them to do. The night life is dead. None of us cared as we used the hotel and facilities, beach, bars, pools ,day beds and loungers all day, and had wonderful meals together at night. My only complaint , and I am a die hard red wine person, the house wine was undrinkable. The worst I have ever had. Had to buy wine if you wanted something quaffable. Upon returning home I have since found out you could buy wine in town and take it to the restaurants. Did not like having a bar tab at all inclusive. Also no reservations required for the al a carte restaurants, but closed shoes for men enforced. Lots of excursions available, many of them close by. A great place overall, unless you are looking for glitzy and fancy. A nice Mexican experience. Would return to this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor, in the older section. We loved it. Only noisy when early morning depa...

We were there from March 2nd to the 16th. We like smaller resorts. The ground are really beautiful with a jungle like atmosphere. Everything was really good, food, beach, room as well as cleanliness all over. They are always cleaning. Now for the staff, everyone tries to please us to make our stay a better place. They are hard working happy staff members. We spoke with other people that had stayed at other next door resorts as well as at the "Riu" in Dec 2012 which is rated 5* and found the service and the staff to be nowhere as friendly and accommodating as the staff at the "Reef" . THE STAFF:I agree with the other reviews. The staff is AMAZING! Each last one of them aim to make you feel comfortable & welcome, like a good friend! Wilberth or Willy, this hilarious young man is a source of information. He is everywhere on the resort at once. Ask him anything and he will be more than happy to get you what you need. At the buffet area, Roxanna was always pleasant as well as the servers, Eric (Mario Lopez) Irving, Mary Rodriguez were always fast to serve us. We would always try to sit in their area. Now for Victoria, excellent with omellettes.
The 4 to 6 pm special coffee everyday was a delight with Guillermo in the middle of the resort by the small cenote,Flambée coffee's with brandy or whatever you like. NOW for the activity staff. What can I say but WOW!! We developped a friendship with them. Ana, Nayoly (Coo-Coo...BEACH VOLLEYBALL!!!!), ITZEL so sweet, and Claudia. We looked forward to seeing them around everyday. the night before leaving, we wnt to a local Mexican restaurant in Playa with several staff members and they paid the bill. We were very surprised since they insisted we were their guest. The food and company was excellent. Thank you to all the Staff at the Reef for making our stay so special The snack bar offered very good nachos, burgers (with guacomole & salsa), fries, chicken wings, pizza.
PLAYA beach in one word. "Spectacular"
Because of it's small size, this resort offers a very personal service to it's visitors. We've met other couples and developped friendships. The staff recognises you making the stay all that more special. We loved the ambiance of The Reef. WeI have come to appreciate the advantages of a smaller resort. The closeness to Playa Del Carmen is a definite bonus.Playa Del Carmen is a 15 minute walk from The Reef and can be accessed by the road or the beach.
The area of Playacar is a gated community making it totally safe to exit the resort for walks or shopping at the flea market. There is also a Starbucks. THE ROOMS: The rooms were kept very clean throughout our stay. We got the upgrated room, so we had a coffee machine, a king size bed,and access to the Mexican grill restaurant for free. The rooms are in 3 story buildings. Thank you to all the Staff at the Reef for making our stay so special!!!
The big question is: Would we go back? The answer: We would definitely go back!

The Reef Playacar

My husband and I stayed at The Reef March 15th to the 22nd. We booked this resort based the great reviews found on Trip Advisor.

THE RESORT: small resort with about 220 rooms. The grounds are absolutely beautiful. A jungle like atmosphere with lush gardens, waterfalls and a cenote. The resort & gardens are very well kept. There are two pools, one having a swim up bar, one buffet, a snack bar, ice cream parlor as well as two restaurants & 4 bars. The area of Playacar is a gated community making it totally safe to exit the resort for walks or shopping at the flea market. There is also a Starbucks. Playa Del Carmen is a 15 minute walk from The Reef and can be accessed by the road or the beach.

THE ROOMS: The rooms are in 3 story buildings. Almost half of them have been renovated. Unforutnately, we were put in older room. It needed some TLC but was clean. Each room is large with a patio door and small balcony with an additional window allowing in natural light. Being at ground level, this was appreciated. Each room is equipped with a flatscreen TV, a full bathroom including hairdryer. We had a king size bed. The mattress was great for me, a little firm according to my husband. If you pay the extra $$ for the superior room, you will have a coffee machine, robe, free safe and access to the Mexican grill restaurant for free. Our room was situated on the ground level of building 9 (room 912). Privacy is an issue at this level, but someone's gotta be on ground level. We kept the curtains closed most of the time which was a bit of a bummer. I believe that being at ground level is the reason it was extremely humid with a nasty musty odor that did not go away no matter what airing out we tried. Our clothes and sheets seemed always wet and to dry them we had to hang them out on the balcony. This was a bother to us as it was unconfortable but we didn't let it ruin our vacation. We tried to change rooms but none were available. Try to get a 2nd or 3rd floor room! Airconditioning worked perfectly.

THE BARS: My husband and I enjoy good drinks. We were pleasantly surpised at the quality of the drinks. They have a great variety and not watered down. Get to know Victor, he'll take good care of you. In our opinion, the wine was awfull. This is often the case in all inclusive's...The two restaurants allow you to buy bottles of better quality or you can simply bring your own.

THE STAFF:I agree with the other reviews. The staff is AMAZING! Each last one of them aim to make you feel comfortable & welcome, like a good friend! Wilberth or Willy, has got to be the best of them all. This hilarious young man is a source of information. He is everywhere on the resort at once. Ask him anything and he will be more than happy to get you what you need. His stamina definitely stands out and his presence made our stay at The Reef an even better one. Thank's Willy!

THE ACTIVITIES: The resort offers several activites (stretching on the beach, water aerobics, volleyball, ping pong, spanish lessons, dance classes ect) Again, the staff is great but they won't insist if this is not your cup of tea. The dive center for water sports has got to be the most complete one I have seen to date. 4 catamarans, 3 seadoo's, one boat for deep sea diving or snorkeling, para sailing, kites, kayaks and this new thing that are like boots you hook up to your feet that propulses water lifting you high up above the sea. I didn't try it but it sure looked cool.

THE BEACH: One word, WOW!!!! Crystal blue water with white sand. The bottom of the sea is equally sandy with no rocks to hurt your feet on. The largest beach compared to the neighbouring resorts. Great beach for long walks. There were always plenty of loungers with parasols and day beds available. I even noticed people from other resorts squatting The Reefs beach...
The pools: Nice size with cool water which was great considering the heat. Cleaned daily.

THE FOOD: I am normally easy to please and can live on chicken alone but I found the buffet to be lacking somewhat at lunch and supper. There was little variety making it repetitive at times. I did however always find something to eat. I really enjoy mexican food and was surprised at how little there was in the buffet. In order to satisfy my love of Mexican food, we ate in town a few times. Others I takled to were pleased with the food. Just goes to show, opinions can differ. Breakfast was great, absolutely no complaints.
The snack bar offered very good nachos, burgers, fries, chicken wings, pizza and ice cream.
The restaurants (Italian & Mexican) were good. No reservations are required for the restaurants which is a nice change. Just show up and eat! Proper attire and closed shoes for men are required in the restaurants.
Ice cream parlor: Sadly I didn't get to taste it but heard it was really good. Opening hours are a little odd though (4pm - 6pm).
Coffee place: Outside living room in the middle of the resort by the cenote. Flambée coffee's with brandy or whatever you like (4pm-6pm), yum.

After years of travelling, my husband and I have come to appreciate the advantages of a smaller resort. Because of it's small size, this resort offers a very personal service to it's visitors. We've met other couples and developped friendships. The staff recognises you making the stay all that more special. We loved the ambiance of The Reef. The closeness to Playa is a definite bonus. Once all rooms are renovated, we would definitely go back. I would recommend this resort for couples ages 30 And up. There were some children, but very few. The resort has several floors with ramps or stairs, possibly making it difficult for some people to get around.

Enjoy your vacation!!!!

Room Tip: Get upper floor (less humid and less noise). Try for renovated room.

Stayed at the "Reef" playcar in March
Wasn't sure what to expect from reading all the reviews before going, they were very mixed.
This was a very clean resort with very hard working, happy staff members. I stayed next door at the "Riu" in Dec 2012 which is rated 5* and found the service and the staff to be nowhere as friendly and accommodating as the staff at the "Reef"

The Reef is a smaller resort, very cozy, the room were average. We stayed in a renovated room close to the pool. Loved our room location as we were close to everything, only downfall was that this room had 2 double beds instead of king size, they seem to be very short on rooms with king size beds. Room had a nice glass shower, beds were a little hard, but had the best linens and pillows, we had a digital safe free with our upgraded premium wristbands. It was nice to have the upgraded wristbands as it allowed us to use "Nico's" this is where the heated hot tub was and the better drinks and such a nice place to relax, with comfy cushioned chairs and beds, we spent a lot of time there.

Food was not the greatest. Breakfast was the best by far, always had fresh fruit, yogurt, fresh cooked eggs at the egg station, juices were good
Lunch & Dinner
Not much variety, food always seemed like it had been cooked awhile before it was served, never hot, even when waiting for a fresh tray of food, came out luke warm.

Our last evening we went to the Italian ala cart. It was ok, nothing special, they do have a section in this menu that you have to pay extra for, also there is an extra charge for certain desserts. That I don't understand!

I'm happy that we were close enough to Playa del Carmen that we could walk 10-15min and we were on 5th Ave. The restaurants in town are wonderful. "Blue Lobster" has the freshest seafood.
Love the atmosphere in Playa, very safe, music, restaurants galore, shopping

The "Reef" overall was a nice place to stay, I would say that the 31/2- 4 star rating that it gets is about right, I would say more towards 4* as the staff go above and beyond the call of duty.

Playa beach in one word. "Spectacular"

The timeshare people are a pain, we were approched on several occasions, mostly when we were in the lobby, leaving the resort to go into town, or waiting to go on an excursion. They are very, very smooth talkers, and before you know it your conversation is leading towards the timeshares. Be aware of this, if you are a strong person you will say no thanks and walk away, the weak people get talked into something they don't want!!!

I would return to the Reef again. You can't beat the beach and the location

We spent a week at our friend's time share and got the premium arm band. We were treated like royalty. Some employees to look for are the front door expert Wilberth. His smile and warm handshakes started our vacation on a high note and kept us coming back to the entrance for the real skinny on how things work in Mexico. Guillermo is a magician with the flaming Spanish coffees every afternoon. He also doubles as one of the resort's finest waiters in the Botecelli restaurant. He is so warm and personable with insights on the food, wine and deserts that he really enhanced our dining to the point we came back to try just about everything. Sometimes all we wanted was the casual buffet dining experience and made sure we sat in Mary Rodriguez's section. She was friendly, efficient, and quick with all our requests and she always took the time to make sure our morning was relaxed and off to a great start. Also at the buffet, the hostess, Roxanna always greeted us with huge smile. We also enjoyed the service and food in the Mexican restaurant and Leonardo's smile as he told us he was pouring tequilla in our water glasses!
The Reef is a beautiful resort, with the main walkway meandering through natural jungle vegetation. Our junior suite was on the first floor and worked perfectly for four people. The two rooms connected and each had a full bathroom. The rooms were kept very clean throughout our stay. The only time we heard people was when they talked as they entered or left their rooms. The beach is gorgeous. You can walk the beach to Playa del Carmen in about 15 minutes and can take such long walks in the other direction that your energy will run out before the beach does. Through the Dive Center at the resort, we enjoyed free boogie boarding, a two hour snorkeling trip (for a fee), free scuba lessons at the pool (Nicholas was a great teacher!), and our son tried the brand new Fly Board. We have a great video and pictures of that. It is amazing! We enjoyed cabanas on four of the seven days of our trip and found pool or beach chairs easily. We claimed the cabanas in the morning by placing some towels and books in one on the way to breakfast. The big question is: Would you go back? The answer: We would love to!

Room Tip: If you want to enjoy the beach, pool and bars book near the pool. If you prefer to explore the Yuca...
