“A pure paradise holiday.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

I came here with my family for 2weeks. I was totally awed by the settings of both the quetzal and toucan hotels. The sound of waterfalls and fountains everywhere. The walk to the pool/beach through the jungle was delightful, especially when you get the howling monkey family passing through. I loved the agoutis, peacocks and trying to spot the huge iguanas sunbathing on the trees.
The options for eating are immense. There are 5 al acarte restaurants to choose from. We ate at the steakhouse twice and I really enjoyed my salmon dish. The two main buffet areas have plenty of choice, from the salad bar, cheese selection, traditional Mexican foods, hot pasta dishes, fresh cooked tuna, salmon, durado or grouper fish. There simply no end to the choice of food.
I loved the entertainment 'star friends' team. The hard work they put in to the activities everyday is fantastic. Mauricio,Carlos,Armando,Liz,Lara,Gerardo, and many more,Well done to you all. There's 25 activities you can choose from that start around 10am to 5pm. There's no pressure to join in if you don't want to. My daily choices started with aqua arobics followed by pool games then salsa/merengé dance lesson, rifle target shooting, game of darts finished of with a game of bingo.
Our rooms were cleaned everyday. Fresh towels and toiletries. We had a ground floor apartment,so be prepared to have the local peacock and his missus come visit. They love grapes(by the way) The agoutis are fascinating creatures which liked chopped apples.
Overall I LOVED THIS PLACE! I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO LOVES NATURE. IT'S PERFECT FOR ANYONE OF ANY AGE OR WHEELCHAIR USERS.
I'm certainly going to start saving to come back soon.

This was our first trip to an all inclusive resort, and it was really wonderful. This hotel truly fit the needs of our family (me, my husband and our son- who is almost 3). The very large pool was great for both kids and adults, and the beach was beautiful. We enjoyed the food on the buffets. It's not the best food in the entire world or anything, but very good quality for banquet style meals. And of course there was tons of it, with lots of diverse options. of the specialty restaurants, our favorite was the japanese restaurant. All of the service we received was excellent, from the wait staff in the restaurants to folks at the front desk. We also went out on our own for a couple of excursions, rented a car and went to Tulum and the beaches down that way. Car rental from the desk at the Quetzal lobby was 1000 pesos ($83US) for one day, including all of the insurance. Absolutely no hassle at all with the rental. We also took a taxi one day to the Cenote Azul (about $25US one way) and then took the public transport vans or combis, back to playa del carmen. This was a great little day trip! Our room at the hotel was simple, with a nice bathroom and shower. It was very clean and again the housekeeping staff was excellent and very friendly. Overall i would highly recommend the Tucan, especially for folks with small children. When I researched family friendly Caribbean resorts it was one of the tops ones I found online, and I was pleased to find out from our experience that it really was.

I stayed here for a destination wedding and this was also my first trip to Mexico. We had a fantastic time.

The good: The hotel is amazingly clean and beautiful throughout. There are fountains and water features indoors. All of the restaurants were decent and I would recommend the hibachi out of the bunch. The pools are big and there is plenty of seating. Get there early if you want shade though. The beach is also perfect. The water is fairly shallow so you can walk out a good ways and it's plenty warm enough. The staff here was very friendly and fun as well. Take an opportunity to participate in some of the sports they have lined up.

The so-so: Drinks, although free, were pretty much universally watered down to the point of almost not being desirable. Ask for a double if you want a normal drink. Also - while the hibachi was good, we were hoping for more sushi options.

The bad: The beds are hard as rock. Ok for some people but if you are like me, call reception and ask for an extra bed mat. The rooms also aren't very sound proof so expect to hear pretty much everything your neighbors and the outside world is doing. There is also no wi-fi except if you pay in the lobby. At the time of this review, $3 U.S. for 15 minutes. Also, we expected to be able to grab boogie/body boards for free daily use but they don't have any.

Overall a good experience with a few minor hiccups.

Room Tip: See if you can get a corner room and on the 3rd level to avoid the noise

This was my second time to this resort, my first stay was back in 2001. Many changes have been made, most for the better. Overall a great experience, food is ok, not much as far as variety goes at the buffet but defintely something for everybody. We did try two of the specialty restaurants, The Italian and the Steakhouse, both were fantastic. Many activities going on both around the pool and the beach. Some vendors on the beach but they are not pushy at all, if you say no thanks they just keep on moving. They also had some vendors at the resort two nights for people who don't like to venture too far from the resort, there is also a small shopping center just minutes from the resort as well. Show at night were pretty good. This was the first time we ventured off the resort to a local club Coco Bongo, a must see show. Wildlife is very prominent on the grounds as well.

Room Tip: Buildings 13-15 are the best if you want the best jungle view and like the spider monkeys.

Had an absolutely fantastic time in Playa del Carmen, and I definitely recommend the Iberostar Tucan. I traveled with my 22 year old daughter, and we had a perfect week. We loved the very natural feel of the Tucan – it is not a big high rise plopped on the beach but rather separate buildings, each housing about 40-some rooms. Its sister property is Iberostar Quetzal, and they share the dining facilities, pool and beach areas. They integrate beautifully with the jungle-like setting.

Kudos go to the amazing, friendly staff. The wait staff, housekeeping, grounds keepers and entertainers are incredibly hardworking and personable. Animacion Excelente! (You’ll know what that means when you get there!) The staff is committed to helping you have a wonderful vacation experience. They truly seem to enjoy what they are doing.

The rooms are pleasant and kept extremely clean, as are the grounds. The pool area is beautiful. There is a very large main pool, a kiddie area, a separate swim-up pool/bar, and a water sports pool. We did have some silly hiccups with our room – the hair dryer and phone needed replacing, the safe needed WD40 in order to open, and the TV reception could be fuzzy. All of these issues were taken care of within minutes of our letting them know, and the staff was very pleasant about it.

The beach is gorgeous and cleaned every morning. There are plenty of lounge chairs and palapas for shade. Fresh beach towels are available all day with the exchange of your towel key. Wait staff circulate through the beach taking drink orders, or you can walk up to the bar on the beach. They are not the strongest drinks, but we aren’t big alcohol consumers and weren’t interested in getting toasted by alcohol plus the sun. Non-motorized water sports are available for free, and you can rent jet skis and pay for dive trips. We paid for catamaran lessons and it was such a blast. Thank you Oliver!

The buffets offered plenty of variety, and plenty of food. This is not the Four Seasons, folks, this is BUFFET! There was so much to choose from, lots of main courses, side dishes, fresh fruit and deserts. We made evening reservations for al a carte dining at the Marimba steak house, the Japanese restaurant, and the Tropical restaurant, which are all known by different names during the day. I had a chicken medallion dish at the Tropical which was especially delicious.

There are tons of activities every day, from water aerobics, beach volleyball, Zumba, to salsa lessons (25 different activities), that you are never left wondering what to do. Go ahead and do the beach Olympics – your embarrassment will pass because hey, you’ll never see these people again, right?!

Our favorite thing about our stay was the entertainment troupe. Mauricio, mi amor, we miss you and Eduardo, the “Mexican Justin Beiber!” Diego is a salsa machine! Each night they perform a different live show, then afterwards a live band performs for about an hour for dancing. The entertainers will politely invite any unaccompanied ladies out to dance. Do it! For the really late nighters there is also a disco on the property.

Must-dos in the area include Tulum, Xel-Ha, Xcaret and La Quinta Avenida. There are Apple Vacation reps on site to book the first three, and La Quita Avenida is a $7 cab ride.

We just got back on Thursday from a week at Iberostar Tucan. It was a great vacation and I am now trying to find friends to go back next year. From what we understand, this resort is much smaller then some North of Playa which have to use golf carts just to get around. The resort, though, has everything we needed, including restaurants, lots of beach chairs, and loads of entertainment (if you want to participate that day). We stayed in the 1300 block, which was close to the pool and not too far from the restaurants. I highly recommend 1300 or 1200 block since these have paths right down to the pool by the towels, which you get fresh everyday. We made reservations for dinner as soon as we got there for the next 3 days and truly enjoyed the Japanese restaurant but did not like the steak at the steakhouse. The beach was great too. This was the only resort we noticed that gave out extra umbrellas if all the huts were filled. Big bonus, as it was hot and sunny and I needed shade! Since we are one of the last resorts on the beach, we were able to quickly walk beyond the hotels and snorkel at a man made reef just south of the hotels. And the walk takes you to beautiful little rock formations and there are lots of shells and crabs to see. And talking about animals, they were such a fun part of the resort. There is a troop of around 22 howler monkey's including 4 new babies, there are lots of agoutis and peacocks, flamingos and iguanas. The grounds are beautiful too. There are waterfalls on the Quetzal side and fountains on the Tucan side.
What to bring: Sound machine for sleeping, conditioner because they don't supply it, sunscreen which is very expensive down there, some $1s for tipping those that you want to tip (not mandatory or anything).
More tips: if you plan on snorkeling or diving, book this before you go since there is a 20% discount which can add up quickly if you are diving. Also, paint some pottery. It is more expensive then buying some in the gift shop, but its yours. William will make your pottery even better with his added artistic abilities!
Want to thank: Ivan at the swim up bar, William at the paint your own pottery, and all the staff of the Dressel Dive Shop (at the Tucan and Cozumel) which was fantastic!
Hope this helps, we had a great time!
