“great times!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Mu hubby and i spent 4 nights in La Perla in December of 2012 and it was a fabulous time together. We usually do not go for "all inclusives" but i must say this was exceptional apart from one experience one afternnon when i wanted a little snack and took a little plate out of the buffet with a piece of cake or a cookie something like that but god forbid, one of the staff came rushing out saying i couldnt take food out and was at a loss for words! i think i stoped chewing and handed the plate over to him......rules are rules but sometimes you have to take a look at the situation. Needless to say we are coming back this time to Esmerelda with our two boys, 5 and 3yrs old. I most probably will be taking food out again but hey we are paying for it and i have two little boys that eat around the clock

My husband and I travel A LOT, have been to "nice" resorts, "good" resorts and some even "great" resorts.....Paradisus Royal Service has blown them all out of the water.
From the greeting ( we landed late in the evening ) to the butler showing us our room, making sure everything was perfect for our arrival and subsequently our entire stay - Lousia you were fantastic!!
Food was great, service was great - we only took in one show but it was well done also....
We will book again for sure within the year to come back and stay again. We LOVED the swim out suite, we've done others before that swim into nothing, this one had a great view of a bigger pool and the bar was close by - beautiful.

Do the Royal Service, well well worth it.

Thanks La Perla, we'll be back soon!

Bree and Chad.

Room Tip: Royal Service swim out suite.

It's easy to become overwhelmed (or doubtful) when searching for the "perfect" place to spend your time and money. So rather than just throwing one more opinion about how incredible La Perla is (which I could do for days), my intention in writing this review is to provide tips and insights that will help you decide if this resort is the right one for you. I've arranged by topic:

1. Rooms and Decor - modern and well-appointed with romance, relaxation and luxury in mind. However every room in the resort has a tub for two indoors and jacuzzi tub outside each suite (every floor). Clean and modern design, but intended to create a calm, peaceful environment - not sterile or austere. If you are a "water person" like I am, this is your personal paradise because water features and relaxing scents ease any worries or concerns you might have had from the moment they greet you with moist, scented towels upon arrival.

2. Food - While tastes vary and you may not like everything you receive, just ask for multiple items when ordering and then "family style" if you're concerned about waste. You won't like everything and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the things you love that you never would have ordered if it weren't an all-inclusive resort. Staff are happy to accommodate all requests. Our favorites for the trip: Passions (7 Star Michelin) Chef's Taster menu (allow 2.5 hours to enjoy + $100 USD charge - worth EVERY penny!) and Fuego. La Palapa's french toast and hash browns. (Ymmm!). Did not like the breakfast buffet - food was stone cold as if warmers weren't working.

3. Beach - There is a short pier to access the beach which goes through lush vegetation - so no ocean view from the ground or lower floors. The beach is quite private, with a narrow strip of sand peppered with ample cabanas for relaxing. They even have beach-side towels and servers to accommodate drink requests. There are some rocks, but if you scoot down a few yards (towards Playa del Carmen) everything is smooth, uncrowded and utterly romp-able. Even if you don't move an inch, the views are vibrant, unfettered and breathtaking.

4. Service - Consistently friendly, genuine and attentive. Every person we spoke with was very willing to accommodate. Every staff member answered our requests with "my pleasure" - and you can tell they meant it. In fact, one mystery I was able to solve was why several TripAdvisor reviewers had mentioned a "lack of responsiveness" on certain requests. My answer: An accommodating Mexican culture - combined with a "resort" mentality trying to cater to every need. Consider that staff may not actually be able to meet your request, and finds it very difficult to say, "no" to a customer request. Suggestion: rather than "telling" what you want, ask, "is it possible/okay?" and give them permission to say no. They will then offer alternatives 100% of the time.

5. Activities/Night Life - We are an active, married couple in our 40's. We weren't looking for a "college party" environment, but we didn't want to feel like we'd gone into retirement either. La Perla offered plenty of poolside activities - from Tango lessons, to wine tastings, to pole dancing classes (clothes on of course :). They also had evening bands, belly dancing and fire-dancing. There were plenty of happily intoxicated people around to make it feel like a party, but also ample private retreat locations if you just wanted to relax with your honey. For us, it was the perfect blend. Lots of beautiful, happy people, but not just a "drinking binge" for those too young to feel the effects the next day. If you are looking for more of a "party" environment, the quieter night calm this resort offers probably isn't for you.

6. Location - Recommend taking pre-paid transport to/from. The surrounding area outside isn't what you'd expect and it's a bit convoluted to get to the resort because you drive through mexican housing?/industrial?/police training camp?... it's hard to describe because we don't really have anything similar in the US that wouldn't be labeled "poverty", yet I get the feeling it wasn't considered such by the locals who lived there. In the end - it absolutely doesn't matter if you're going to stay on resort or take the beach walk to Playa del Carmen. Stay somewhere else if you want to be in the heart of town.

7. Royal Service - We stayed in the Royal Service Swim Up Junior Suite and it was incredible. We had our own personal heated infinity pool, another pool exclusive to Royal Service with private walk/swim up bar, private restaurant, personal butler service (with cell phone to reach them), bottles of alcohol and mini-bar for personal consumption, and special access to spa Water Therapy treatment at no charge. For an extra $300 USD (for the stay NOT PER DAY), we really were treated like royalty. It was worth every penny!

8. Outstanding Staff - Our personal butler, Karen deserves a special acknowledgement. She is a true professional and highly competent. Her friendly insights and thoughtful attention to every detail left us completely pampered and relaxed. She unpacked for us so we could relax by the beach, made all our reservations - with special attention given to our seating preferences, provided small touches to our room - such as rose petals and chocolates or returning to our room after dinner to find a jacuzzi filled with bubbles, rose petals and robes and slippers laid next to the tub - and even packed for us the final evening so we could enjoy our last night in Mexico. She arranged wake-up calls, early room service on days we had excursions, and recommended restaurants for our day-trip to Playa del Carmen. We typically would have had two butlers, but a recent staffing change meant that Karen covered both shifts. Despite this, she always answered her phone promptly, responded with a smile, and met her professional obligations without ever being intrusive. If she lived in USA, I'd hire her to work for my company. I don't even have a role that would fit her, but I would create one because someone of her work ethic and abilities would be an asset to any employer.

Juan at the Royal Service Bar also deserves special recognition. While his exemplary service and friendliness were as outstanding as all the Paradisus' staff, he always went the extra step to answer our questions, provide "local" perspective, and make us feel at ease. He is a man of good character and strong work ethic. When asked directly he shared a bit about how happy he is to work a job he loves for a company that treats him well. He is a humble, family man who will pass on strong work values to his son.

Piertre, Manager at Passions Restaurant. I admit to being a bit intimidated by the menu at Passions, but it came so highly recommended we really wanted to do the chef's tasting menu. After initial worry about some of the selections (I didn't generally enjoy some of the key ingredients) Pierre came to our table and set the world to right. He asked about our personal likes and dislikes, recommended substitutions, spoke with the chef to make sure the order of the dishes presented would be most pleasing and was incredibly warm and friendly while catering to our needs. We never felt like a burden and the only complaint I can offer of the evening was that we were SO full, yet the food was SO amazing - that we literally ate ourselves beyond full. Advice: pace yourself. The dished appear small, but will definitely fill you up! :)

It is my fondest wish that you will enjoy your vacation as much as we enjoyed ours at Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla (Royal Service - Junior Suite Swim Up Room)!

Dear Mrs. Nancy and Mr. Jim,

Thank you for posting a detailed, objective and useful review including most of the parts of Paradisus La Perla.

A common concern from the tourists when choosing a resort is the beach area. We have been working to maintain it free of rocks and seaweed brought by waves. It is great to know you had a pleasant time swimming and relaxing by the turquoise sea and sandy beach.

Thank you for recognizing and giving a special mention to your butler Karen, she definitely left an excellent impression on you about her professionalism and her service vocation. She will be aware of your gratitude to her labor, the same way with Juan, how surprised you with his charisma, and Pierre, who gave you the confidence to try new flavors in “Passion by Martin Berasategui” restaurant and provide you an unforgettable dining experience.

We are pleased to read that your overall experience was amazing as we can see on the photos you have shared with us.

We hope to host you again when you decide to come back to Playa del Carmen.

My husband and I stayed at The Perla, Paadisus Feb. 10-17th. Our room was more than we expected, the resort is very clean and the staff helpful, courteous and friendly. I can't begin to tell you how good the food is. We had breakfast daily at The Hadar, I loved the variety and the smoothie bar . Our waiter Antonio and his team Santos and Carolina could not do enough for us. If I had to say anything negative it would be that the beach is not one of the nicest however the pool and resort make up for it. In all a very pleasant experience with wonderful staff, cooks, waiters etc. Angelica from Sudbury

Room Tip: Swim up available, kind of neat! Others has jacuzzi tub right on balcony, nice touch.

We stayed February 10th through 15th, 2013. We paid the extra for the ROYAL Service Ocean View. Extra $110 per day!! They said the Royal service comes with: 1. Heated pool (NOT even close.) 2.Personal Concierge service (although she was very friendly she missed the mark. I handed her a piece of paper with 4 restaurant names and our requested reservations time. Upon arrival to each restaurant we found she only reserved 2 of the 4 requested restaurants. 3. Premium liquor in your room. We asked for "Captain Morgan" and her reply was that that was not one of the premium options but we could go to one of the bars and they have it there. So NO premium liquor. 4. When we did request "Captain Morgan" and coke at the bars about 50% of the time we received the "local" flavored rum instead.
All in all, beautiful resort, friendly staff but NOT worth the increased value we paid. Great walking distance to Playa Del Carmen. Hopped on the ferry to Cozumel and spent the day.

Room Tip: Royal Service is not worth the money!

Dear guest,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review from your stay at Paradisus La Perla – Royal Service.

As a service-oriented company, we have a firm devotion to accomplish our guest’s satisfaction; therefore, we are sorry to read the butler service was not what you were expecting for. That additional service provided to our Royal Service guests, must be a total help during your holidays. Be sure we will take corrective actions to prevent future occurrences about it and for the next time you honor us with your visit you will notice a difference about it.

Your notes have been sent to the Beverages manager as Premium liquor brands are part of our LUXEclusive plan. We will check this situation with our bartenders and correct this issue immediately. Our guests must receive what they order and paid for.

On the other hand, we are pleased to know you found our staff very attentive and that you were able to enjoy beautiful landscapes while walking through the beach to Playa del Carmen.
We hope you can provide us another opportunity to host you in Paradisus La Perla.

I have just returned from this gorgeous property and had to write to thank everyone at your elegant establishment!! My husband and I were there for a business conference and I commented to my husband that it was the best conference I had ever attended and it was thanks to the professional staff, services and accomodations of your resort. Everyone was fantastic, but if I had to give thanks to two very professional staff members it would be: Mesero Erick!! from the restaurant, The Grill and Franklin, my Yoga Instructor....PERFECTION!! Thank you!

We just returned from this property. The staff was excellent! We don't have any complaints on this property. The beach service by Luis was the best. No matter if he was getting a tip or not he made sure that each guest had the best service. He is a dedicated employee who clearly loves his job. This man deserves recognition for a job well done.

The food and food service was just as good. We enjoyed all of the meals.

The rooms are equally as nice as the pictures that we seen her on trip advisor. The house keeper kept everything in tip top shape.

The grounds were perfect!

The beach was narrow but, plenty of chairs and shade.
