After reading many reviews on this website prior to our vacation to the Porto Real, I will admit we were having some second thoughts on our choice. Our vacation was booked directly through MLT Worryfree Vacations and we paid for a Jr Suite Ocean View room. We arrived in Cancun at 5:00 PM, grabbed our luggage, and were quickly escorted by Felipe to our transfer. We arrived at the Porto Real at around 7:00PM and were given our room key within minutes. They conveniently did not mention what "type" of room the key was for. We did ask, and were told that is was a Jr Ste with no ocean view as there were none available at that time (turns out it was a construction view). We were offered 2 free lobster dinners, 2 free massages, and were told that the following morning we would be able to change to the ocean view room that we had reserved. Instead of putting up a battle, we hesitantly agreed. We enjoyed our first night in Playa, and the following morning at 11AM my boyfriend went to the front desk and was immediately given the key to a beautiful ocean view room - 1st floor, just steps from the beach. We moved our things and settled in. I admit it is a pretty sad situation when you are happy because you actually got the room you paid for in advance. Unfortunately, this is how this hotel seems to operate. When (or if) you get past the front desk, though, the rest of the staff is wonderful. Our room was always immaculate, with soft drinks and water stocked in the refrigerator. We were early risers, so we never had any problem finding pool or beach chairs to enjoy. The pool is nice and the beach wasn't the best I've seen, but you are not limited to the beach directly in front of the hotel, so a short walk to the north leads you to a beautiful beach. The wait staff outside is there to serve your every need. Eliana, Jorge, and David all went out of their way to keep us happy....and we made great friends with them in the process. One afternoon was a bit rainy, and we ended up playing "mexican poker" with the guys at the outdoor bar! What a blast! I guess the vacation is what you make of it. Yes, we were fortunate enough to receive the room we paid for on the second day; however, we had decided even if we didn't we were going to make the most of our stay. One other warning....be weary of anyone claiming to be with "Guest Services" or "Hotel Info/Hospitality Desk". Down there those are fancy cover-up terms for time share sales. The first night, a man did approach us and asked if we had just checked in. We told him yes, and he asked us to schedule a time to meet with him about the "property". We declined and told him we would catch up with him later. We saw him several more times throughout our trip and just waved as we walked passed...he never asked us again.
A few people we met did get sucked into this one. My only advice, don't book on the internet without a tour package and be sure your written itinerary states an ocean view room (I think that saved us, because they did make a copy of it for their records).

My husband and I have been to Gran Porto in January the last two years.
This year we brought in-laws from Florida as well. We ALL think this place is unbelieveable. The service in the best I have seen anywhere in Mexico. I wish they had more evening entertainment, however, the rooms, food, drinks and service is wonderful! Being able to walk to everything -shopping, ferry to Cozemul...is great. Wish they weren't all booked up-I'd go again this year!

Gran Porto Real 2-13-04 through 2-20-04. As several others had said, overbooked and room was not ready upon arrival. I'd gone down with another couple, too. Gave us the 3rd floor overlooking the new construction (which would have been an ocean view except for the new hotel). Noise started at 0645 which was my old time zone of 0445. So, although I'd booked months in advance and contacted Real Resorts and "confirmed" my reservation, no room as booked. Now I was sweating.
Around 1 PM the next day a room finally came available and we had to repack and move. Kind of shot the day because I was skeptical about getting my money's worth. This turned out to be 2nd floor. Ocean was blocked by palm trees. Front desk apologized, admitted booking by home office was and had been causing these types of problems. I went down on the Euro plan so they gave us one day of all-inclusive. This is the only hotel I know where they charge to use the weight room. Huge beds!
Walk right down to the beach. An "okay" experience but clearly more geared towards "all-inclusive" environment.

Buyer Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We booked our vacation through a travel agent in Cincinnati, who booked 9 of us a package through Vacation Express. We paid for FIVE ocean-front all inclusive junior suites. We arrived at the Gran Porto Real at about 2:00 PM. My husband & I were the first couple to check in. I STATED "this is an ocean-front room just like we booked, RIGHT?" The manager was extremely rude and replied." your voucher does not state that and you can get a lawyer!" That was our warm greeting. WE LOOKED AT EACH OTHER IN DISBELIEF! All 9 of us went up to check out the first room before other couples checked in. We pulled back the curtain and there was a lovely view of construction about 3 city blocks long. We went back to the desk and did make COMPLETE fools of ourselves, screaming about how we paid 3 grand for oc frnt rooms 8 months prior. It was a 25th wedding anniversaries trip. Now, it was Saturday and US travel agencies are closed until Monday! The first rude manager went off duty, and another ruder manager shows up! He said, "our hotel is always full--you don't like it, go somewhere else!" He said, "Vacation Express is here every day--they should be here in 10 minutes!" One hour later, he called a rep from Vacation Express after we threatened to sue the hotel. She did come to the hotel and said she would look contact the V Exp people up in Cancun and get back to us. (NEVER DID!) We called our USA travel agent on Monday. She promised to send a fax. It showed up on Tuesday. At that point, the hotel admitted they had 2 ocean-view rooms left. We had to decline because we needed 5 rooms, and how can you tell 3 couples that they don't get the oceanview? We spent hours and money making long distance calls only to get nowhere. We got no compensation, no apology, no free massage! The front desk people are your worst nightmare. They do this every day of the year and hopefully get paid well for getting screamed at by everyone who checks in!ONCE YOU GET PAST THE FRONT DESK NIGHTMARE, NEVER OPEN YOUR CURTAINS IN YOUR ROOM, USE A GOOD SET OF EAR PLUGS FOR THE HAMMERING THAT STARTS PROMPTLY AT 7:00 AM, THE PLACE IS PRETTY SWEET......... The junior suites are very spacious and comfortable. The shower is big enough to hold 4 people. Hot water arrives 5 minutes later if you just turn on hot w/no cold. The rooms and the hotel have lovely marble floors. They are extremely clean and work on the hotel like a cruise ship (always painting & sprucing up). The staff is very courteous & the restaurants serve great food. The boats give the place a quaint feel. You can walk to the left of the construction and have a lovely beach to stroll and moderate waves. The location of the property is fabulous. You're walking distance to the ferry that goes to Cozumel, to Senior Frogs, to the bus station that goes to Old Cancun. Lots of nice shopping, bars & restaurants on Fifth Avenue right in front of the resort!Incidentally, the construction is owned by Gran Porto Real. They are building lots more ocean-front rooms to deceptively sell. They are angling the balconies and you will be able to see the ocean with a good set of binoculars. If a hotel in the USA pulled this kind of scam, it would go out of business in 2 weeks.Bottom Line -- This hotel is making fools of the American people!

While the wait and room staff were fantastic, the room and property were misrepresented. Their Jr. Suite is no more than an average sized room. We had paid for a suite with an ocean view - NOT!Management was unresponsive although they admitted they did not have the room we paid for. They even had form letters on hand for this problem offering a manicure, massage or facial to compensate for the room downgrade. We ended up with one kig bed and a rollaway for three guests! The toilet did not work even after repeated repair attempts. The air conditioning never worked. As for the beach - what beach! Swiming pool was misrepresented. Food was okay. Their call liquor and wines were cheap and below mediocre. All in all - this place is a bad deal.
