After reading many reviews on this website prior to our vacation to the Porto Real, I will admit we were having some second thoughts on our choice. Our vacation was booked directly through MLT Worryfree Vacations and we paid for a Jr Suite Ocean View room. We arrived in Cancun at 5:00 PM, grabbed our luggage, and were quickly escorted by Felipe to our transfer. We arrived at the Porto Real at around 7:00PM and were given our room key within minutes. They conveniently did not mention what "type" of room the key was for. We did ask, and were told that is was a Jr Ste with no ocean view as there were none available at that time (turns out it was a construction view). We were offered 2 free lobster dinners, 2 free massages, and were told that the following morning we would be able to change to the ocean view room that we had reserved. Instead of putting up a battle, we hesitantly agreed. We enjoyed our first night in Playa, and the following morning at 11AM my boyfriend went to the front desk and was immediately given the key to a beautiful ocean view room - 1st floor, just steps from the beach. We moved our things and settled in. I admit it is a pretty sad situation when you are happy because you actually got the room you paid for in advance. Unfortunately, this is how this hotel seems to operate. When (or if) you get past the front desk, though, the rest of the staff is wonderful. Our room was always immaculate, with soft drinks and water stocked in the refrigerator. We were early risers, so we never had any problem finding pool or beach chairs to enjoy. The pool is nice and the beach wasn't the best I've seen, but you are not limited to the beach directly in front of the hotel, so a short walk to the north leads you to a beautiful beach. The wait staff outside is there to serve your every need. Eliana, Jorge, and David all went out of their way to keep us happy....and we made great friends with them in the process. One afternoon was a bit rainy, and we ended up playing "mexican poker" with the guys at the outdoor bar! What a blast! I guess the vacation is what you make of it. Yes, we were fortunate enough to receive the room we paid for on the second day; however, we had decided even if we didn't we were going to make the most of our stay. One other warning....be weary of anyone claiming to be with "Guest Services" or "Hotel Info/Hospitality Desk". Down there those are fancy cover-up terms for time share sales. The first night, a man did approach us and asked if we had just checked in. We told him yes, and he asked us to schedule a time to meet with him about the "property". We declined and told him we would catch up with him later. We saw him several more times throughout our trip and just waved as we walked passed...he never asked us again.
A few people we met did get sucked into this one. My only advice, don't book on the internet without a tour package and be sure your written itinerary states an ocean view room (I think that saved us, because they did make a copy of it for their records).
