We had been frequent guests at the old Capitan LaFitte until it closed and then reopened as Petit LaFitte down the beach, closer to Playa del Carmen. We had stopped in to check out the new place a couple of years ago, but weren't impressed by the air conditioning, internet access and telephones that the old place didn't have. This year we decided to try it anyway, and are very pleased that we did. The majority of the staff of the old place moved down the beach, so it was like a homecoming to see them again and enjoy their hospitality. The internet and telephones were easy to ignore, and because the hotel itself is only one room deep we could open windows on the front and back of our room and forget the a/c. This is a 'semi inclusive' place, with a tasty breakfast and dinner included in the room price--- but not including lunch or the bar tab. The beach along this stretch of Riviera Maya is perfect for taking long walks, and the atmosphere at this hotel is lively but not the 'party city' you'd find in Cancun or Playa del Carmen. We were there over winter break, so a fair amount of the guests brought their families and we enjoyed being surrogate grandparents to the well behaved kids we met.
