“Perfect hotel for a holiday in Playa del Carmen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013 via mobile

We decided very well in advance for Reina Roja for our one week stay in Playa del Carmen, and we are so glad we did. It's a very original theme and concept. We had a Junior suite and it was huge, a lot of space; a big bathroom and shower, a a nice balcony with a maniqui looking over the street. The breakfast every morning was delicious and the staff in the restaurant was very helpful. The roof top pool was a nice spot to spend some quiet hours in the afternoon after coming coming back from the beach. The staff in the reception provides a nice service but could be more helpful and friendly. In general we had a very nice stay during our holidays in the Reina Roja....

This is one weird Joint. We are still not quite sure what to think about the Reina Roja. We chose this small boutique hotel because it looked unique and different and it did not disappoint. The location is very good as the hotel is located a half block from the famous 5th avenue. We paid $85 US. One thing about the pool on top of the terrace…. It is not really a pool as it is only one foot deep. You would never know that by the pictures. The service was good if you speak spanish which we do. The vibe at night is freaky and there are two nights a week where woman drink for free or at least until your selection of vodka or tequila runs dry which happened early in the night. The advertised pool party on sunday night was no where to be seen. All the parties were down in the bar and lobby. It seems to be a voyeur type place as the rooms are setup up for you to be watched. The balconies are all covered with a mesh and you can be seen from many different views by other adjacent balconies or the ones above. The are not meant to be private. One other thing we thought was odd other than the decor was there is a big window in front of each bed where you could open the drapes to the hall way for a full view of the bed. One thing this is a place for people who want to party. The noise quality between rooms is non existent . You can hear everything. There are three floors plus the lobby and the terrace. We got a room on the first floor and you could hear the music clearly until it stopped around 1.30 am. and that was a quiet room. If they have a party on the terrace then the 3rd floor would have the same situation noise wise. So if you are looking for a little more quiet then take rooms 207 to 211 with the exposure to the pool of the hotel adjacent. It Still will not be absolutely quiet even. Although this is not the type of hotel you go to relax. It is more for the experience and night life. Coco Bongo and Blue Parrot and all the cool party bars are located on 12th ave which is 4 blocks away. We also enjoyed going to different beaches which the hotel had arrangements with. There were 4 different beaches within a 10 block walk to choose from. We had a car and parking was underground and free. The free internet had ok signal strength. It was not super slow but not super fast either.

Overall if you know why you are trying this place it is delivers what you expect for a reasonable price.

The concept is interessing but that all. Thank to the designer. I think it's nice to have a drink there but that all.

We have been so dissapointed by these experience. Price was very expensive for the services:
- Noise (music for the bar until late, we was in the 2nd floor)
- The service was rude and we wait at least 30 minute at our check in. (It was our only hotel in mexico with so rude service)
- hot water cut-off after a short shower
- Cheap breakfast: for example, I asked for fresh orange juice (its was normal for me because everywhere mexican served fresh orange juice for 20 pesos/1.5dollar) and the waiter arrived wtith a very cheap orange juice from the supermarket. I tell her that I really appreciate to have a fresh orange juice so she told me that I have to pay. The same for coffee => bad coffee for "the breaskfast included " and good coffee for additionnal fees. I was very chocked!
- Swimming pool : according to the picture on the website, you think you can swin in the large swwing pool, but in reality you can swin in a small section because the depth of the largest section is about 25 inches
- Location is little bit far from the playa (no sea view)

we do not recommand these hotel and we find a another nice hotel for the 2nd nigth.

Booked this place via agoda online based on reviews, location and pictures. And from the second arrived it was a pleasure to stay.
The whole complex is about style and architecture but this barely ever conflicts with quality the place offers.
Considering you have no problem with the color red and half-naked mannequins. Hard to tell how awesome this place really looks like. All rooms are reachable through a pier construction which is covered by plants and jungle noise (stereo boxes).
The rooms are modern and also very stylish in the same way the rest of the hotel is designed. Nice tv, nice bathroom, the shower could be better, the bed(s) are clean and stable as the rest of furnitures inside. Balcony is a little bit small and suffers from the design - to cover everything with a net construcure. But okay the things u see from there are rather boring anyway.
Roof top area has a pool and serves as a great party venue - unfortunately we missed this event due a cold Sunday.
The lobby where breakfast is served is also the nightlife party location. Not much to say but awesome. Food is delicious. Coffee sucks as usual outside Europe. Staff is very friendly and willing to speak their best English. What else to say? Have a look at this place. Just some minor warnings: can be loud at night till 2am if a party goes on in the lobby. But who cares?
Can happen that people walking bye taking pictures of the hotel while your eating.
And don't send pictures of the you and the hotel back home without telling that it is actually no bordell.

I spend a month in Mexico and stayed around 3 times in reina roja during this time. from my first day, David Velazquez at the reception helped me with the best places to go in playa and to eat. his knowledge of the whole yuca tan peninsula was crucial in booking hotels and tour. without him I wouldn't be able to see chichen itza and the best denotes in the area. I highly recommend anyone that is looking for a funky, trendy and comfortable place to stay in playa del Carmen, just go there and ask David anything I'm quite sure the guy is going to help you!!! :)

Room Tip: make sure you don't get the rooms near the roof as they have parties (great parties!) on the roo...

We arrived from isla Mujeres to this hotel, which we had booked via their web site.it is certainly very different from any other hotel in the area and our first impression wasn't great due to slow check in and unsmiling receptionist. However once shepherded through the bar/night club we stepped into a lovely room, quirkily decorated and lit,but the facilities were very good, the king size bed was huge and comfy with almost silent a/c and fridge.
The bathroom had a large walk in shower with waterfall shower head and loads of hot water, free toiletries were good quality.
The safe inside the wardrobe was easy to use and gave peace of mind. Our room was on the third floor and we hardly hear any noise, although they were advertising a pool party, the pool being on the roof, for the Sunday night but we checked out before then so weren't affected
Breakfast was included, and was substantial and good quality, the servers tried hard, but didn't always understand what we wanted(we didn't speak Spanish)but no complaints.
My only criticism was that the bar prices were high, and the bar staff expected a tip even if they opened a beer and placed it on the bar!
So we mostly took our business elsewhere,
Overall my impressions were good, the location was central and close to 5th Avenue, and I would recommend a stay here,if only to enjoy the playfulness of its design

Nice stay, the rooms are spacious clean and well decorated, a bit dark but fortunetly there is many lights to help, the bathroom is 5 star. The concept of the hotel is very weird with dolls everywhere in the lobby and even on your balcony you've got to be used to it might be scary some time... But it's very original especially the wooden corridors, the architect did an awesome job, considering that it is pretty good soundproofed for an open air structure. The Rooftop is cool, it has pvc pipes all around, the pool is very long around 35m but 30m of it is only 30cm deep, unfortunetly we didn't have the chance to experience the pool parties it was not busy enough to occur, the advertising team has to work on it.
Good experience but you have to like the red theme color and at night it gets worse with the red lights too, funny the first days but after a week it's a bit boring.
