Stayed at Mahekal over thanksgiving 2013. Pros: the bungalows/palapas are beautiful, whether on the beach or garden. Pretty walking trails, nice beach, smaller resort, so very warm and personable atmosphere. Quiet nights except for waves crashing. Food is good, with generous variety day to day (dinner, breakfast all the same).
Cons: hotel is located between public beach access. In some places resort footpaths are adjacent to public areas with car access. There is a sulfur smell in the beach area. The resort is under construction and will be for some time. Boli accommodated us generously and changed our room away from the noise. They start early and run around with wheelbarrows all day. Alcohol, water and soda is not included. There are shops nearby for retail purchase. This gets pricey after a week there. There a no onsite kids activities, other than ceramic painting.
Overall, vey romantic and quiet resort, unique too, given the palapas and balcony with swinging hammocks.

Room Tip: Request to be Away from noise, construction

Thanks for sharing your opinion on Trip Advisor. It's always good to read them because they help us recognize our guests favorites, and those details where we need to pay more attention.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by our construction works, and it's good to read the only interruption your nights had, was the waves crashing.

Phase one remodeling is over, and we are very happy to offer guests, some of our brand new units this Holiday season.

We really hope you give us the chance to welcome you again, and deliver the new 'mahékal' experience. Stay tuned for news and updates.

Warm regards,

My husband and I stayed here for a week and thought it was a wonderful experience. The staff and facilities are both wonderful. The food overall was good, but I would recommend eating breakfast and lunch at the resort and going out for dinner if you really want to experience the local flavor. We highly recommend it.

My husband and I just returned from 9 nights at Playa del Carmen's Mahekal Beach Resort and enjoyed every minute of our stay! From the moment we arrived and were happily greeted and checked-in by, who would be become our go-to guy and pal, Boli (Mahekal's official concierge but pretty much THE MAN at Mahekal), we knew we'd made the right choice in hotels. Yes, there might be fancier spots in Playa...but Mahekal's palapa style, Mexican décor, superbly clean premises, and their greatest asset - their STAFF was perfection. Everyone there is friendly very helpful and just really added that personal, but not invasive, touch my husband and I always love about boutique hotels! Another pleasant surprise was their FOOD - it was FANTASTICALLY DELICOUS! Good food at hotels...yes I know not an easy thought to conjure most times but at Mahekal our hats are off to their chefs.

All I ask is that Mahekal does NOT lose the wonderful touch their staff brings.....and keep the non TV/phone/internet motif going on in the rooms...that last touch was also a very unexpectedly wonderful touch. Hey...aren't you supposed to disconnect and enjoy your husband/wife/partner when you're on vacation? I certainly did and did NOT miss any minute of the "real world" waiting for us after our UTTERLY RELAXING and BEAUTIFUL beach stay!

P.S. Boli - seriously THANK YOU for helping make our trip so memorable and the most comfortable! We will be emailing you the photo we took upon our departure!

Room Tip: If you don't mind the sound of the ocean at night - definitely opt for beach front! 35 Playa all...

Just finished a four night stay. Be aware the hotel is currently undergoing some pretty extensive renos to a large block of rooms in the middle of the resort. Constructions starts early in the day and gors to at least 6 or 7 at night. Although the noise was not overly annoying it does distract from the atmosphere the resort is known for.

That said, we still enjoyed our stay. The beach and staff are as fantastic as always. We also enjoyed the food especially the casual breakfasts. Lunches and dinners were very good as well.

I think the resort is due for a little updating and hopefully we remain as fabulous as ever when all is said and done.

We will be back...it's still our favorite spot in Mexico!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by construction works during your stay, and appreciate your understanding. We are pleased to read that our team was attentive, will share the good comments with everyone. We agree that oceanfront breakfast is one of the best moments of a Mahékal stay.

The first phase of updates is done. Some of our units were remodeled, on both the structure and decoration, and we are excited to deliver the renovated Mahékal experience. Stay in touch for news on upcoming surprises and additions. We will be happy to welcome you back.

Let us know if we can help with any planning on your next visit.

We stayed at Mahekal Beach Resort for three nights in September 2013. While the resort itself was nice at first glance, the villas are pretty old and a bit filthy. I was supised not to have a bathtub, only a shower. In addition, we lived in a villa that was close to a bar in the neibouring resort and they had live music, loud live music, very loud live music.
We liked the beach a lot, white sand, tourqiouse water, not too many people, not too touristy.
What we didn't like is food. You may want to have breakfast at a hotel, but go for lunch and dinner somewhere else. The food doesn't taste good, not a lot of to choose from and not the best quality.
Overall, I think this resort is overpriced. You can find better places for the same amout of money.

Greetings to Texas,

Thanks for writing a review and sharing your opinion with other travelers and us. None of our rooms have bathtub, except for those additions included on the renovation plans that will offer plunge pools at some of our villas.

We are glad to read you liked our beach, being on the north end of Playa gives us the opportunity to enjoy another atmosphere.

We are disappointed to read that food was not your favorite. Some changes have been done to our menu, and we are decided to keep on improving. Already receiving some good comments about it.

We hope you give us the chance to welcome you again, once our renovation works are finished, we will be happy to deliver the new Mahékal experience.

Warmest regards,

Emilio Palazuelos

My mom and I booked a last minute trip to Mahekal for my birthday. We chose this resort because of their October special, location and because my Mom had been to the resort when it was the Shangri-La Caribe. It was a fabulous week stay simply because the service is so wonderful and the location is perfect. Thought they are going through renovations on parts of the resort, they were quick to accommodate our requests. Boli, manager and general ROCK STAR took such good care of us along with the rest of the staff, we felt like we were a part of the family. Manuel at the beach was extremely attentive and took great care of us while we lounged on the powdered sugar sand by the beautiful turquoise waters. The resorts proximity to the 5th street shopping and restaurants and its flexible meal plan make for the perfect day. We chose to do breakfast at the restaurant, lunch on the beach, both included in the room rate, and then a stroll down 5th street to decide where to dine and explore! The rooms are spacious and the hammocks on the porches addictive. Overall, a great place to spend my birthday relaxing with mom and to escape a stressful job. Can't wait to come back after the remodeling is done! Thank you BOLI!!!!

Room Tip: Ask for an upgraded room or one upstairs for a better view.
