We chose the Playacar Palace as we have already stayed at one of the sister hotels (Moon Palace) and thought that the same quality and attention to detail could be enjoyed by us but in a different location. We weren't far wrong!
There were however a couple of negatives, the first being the $2,000 resort credit we were offered upon booking. We were advised that this could be used towards a room upgrade, excursions and/or the SPA. As the last two were not of interest to us, we booked a standard room and waited to use the credit for the room upgrade only.
Upon check-in we were told that this was no longer possible and so we were put in a room which over looked...something that can only be described as a dumping ground and the staff quarters of the resort next door. Needless to say we didn't use the balcony much!
The other negative, and the thing that has actually turned me AGAINST Palace resorts was the way they tried to sell me a membership... I had to see off 3 salesmen in one sitting, which resulted in a 90 minute 'presentation' lasting over 3 hours and it actually bordered on the verge of desperation for a sale - Not good and not needed whilst on vacation.
The inside of the hotel is clean, the staff are friendly, the restaurants and food is of the highest quality (albeit with a slightly limited, repetitive choice in the buffet Del Mar) and the grounds are well kept and maintained (there was always someone painting something to make the place look even more spotless!!) They even use a plum line to ensure the tables are exactly where they should be!! outstanding!
The pool and beach area were spotless, sunbeds were comfortable, the service was second to none!! (Nora and Sara were excellent and deserve special thanks!!) and the entertainment team were friendly, funny and.....[well]..entertaining!
The thing I didn't like was the saving of pool beds by the hotel for its "members". More often than not these beds remained empty throughout the day and in some cases these people even had beds saved in one spot whilst using other beds in another (follow the sun I think the phrase is)
The location was probably the best of any hotel in Playa Del Carmen and it is about a 30 second walk to 5th Avenue, which is lined with shops, bar and restaurants - be prepared to haggle though! The Cozumel ferry is right next to the hotel as is Senor Frogs which acted as an 'after hours' drinking venue for people alot younger than me!
In summary, Small & friendly, Clean & Tidy, maybe think about varying the food better, explain the resort credit in more detail before arrival, apply less pressure on trying to get a 'sale' and then this would be the ultimate in holiday hotels.
Ask for a pool view not a side one.
