“Christmas in Mexico”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014

Room was very bright and sunny, we had a view of the chill pool from our balcony. There were a few bugs around the room, but nothing out of the ordinary from any other place Ive been in Mexico or Cuba. The beach was really good, not too rocky, water was clear and were able to see a few fish, not enough for snorkeling off the beach. We heard you could walk down the beach about 20 min and there was good snorkeling. The hotel was renovated in the last while, but still needs a few repairs here and there. We were able to use 4 other Riu's in the area, which gave us lots of variety - pools, bars, food, activities. There is a small market about 5-10 min walk away and Playa is about a 30 min walk or 5 min cab ride. I would stay here again!

We stayed 12th -26th March 2014 using Thomson Holidays . we were there to celebrate our Golden Wedding anniversary. This was the best holiday we have had at any RIU hotel we have visited, we are RIU diamond card holders. From the moment we arrived we had super fast check in , cases brought to room within 10 mins. Excellent room 4310 great pool and sea views, late morning sun and close to pools and beach
.
Food. We ate all meals in out side restaurant, breakfast and evening dinner. food was out of this world such a choice had to stop the chefs putting it on slice of beef was like a giant steak, such a choice. Mid day meal was taken in the snack bar still a great choice also you can eat in the open Italian restaurant without booking lunch times.

Bars and Drinks. Service in all bars was great staff worked like Trojans nothing was to much effort. Top marks to Alfrado and Israel. All top brands were available, try Pineapple juice and tequila,

Pools and beach , pool tended to get crowded very quickly so it is a case of earlier towels, beach was great plenty of beds, beware of security if you pull your bed out past marker posts you will be asked to move back.

Rooms staff kept them spotless plenty of towel art, extra towels if you want them. No problem with shower. shower gel supplied. as well as soap

Entertainment Staff were about all day but were not pushy, but great fun to watch, we found that people from the other RIU Hotels preferred to come to our hotel because it was really lively during the day, the staff work so hard you wonder how they keep going all day. We had some nice chats with Ari and Mariana, but all the staff were very friendly and helpful and evening shows were good especially Grease, I think it was the best we have seen on our travels, very professional, well done.

The whole complex is kept spotless, would recommend a visit RIUs Playa Car and Tequila as you will see what RIU old style is as compared to Riu refurbish at Yucatan

We stayed during the American school spring break and found the youngsters fantastic they were a good laugh very polite even when they had a few drinks in the pool bar. A walk in to Town along the beach is to be recommended as it is a lovely town to visit, traders are not at all pushy.

Tips. Take antiseptic hand wash as none is supplied.
Contactless electronic door key we spent time looking for slot, and programmable electronic safe.
There are no chairs round pool or on the beach so if you have a back problem take a chair from your balcony.
Thomson reps very good and helpful around lot of the time
Lots of mossies take spray and room deterrent
You will be told dollars are not accepted all prices in shops are in dollars as at the airport.
We took a large supply of 20 peso notes for tips these equate to £1. if you give dollars its only 60p.
There is a very good book exchange by the towel hut. reps also have a few books

We were asked by the rep if we would like to book VIP lounge at airport on return. We found this to be a great asset not only for the refreshments, which were excellent, but it also fast tracks you through the various queues at the airport.

All the waiters in the various restaurants gave great service but we would just like to say thank you to our waiter Oliver who looked after us in the main restaurant in the evening he made us feel very special.

Room Tip: if you wont a special room location e mail hotel and ask . we got exactly what we wanted

We stayed here on the last two weeks of March for 10 days.

The flight is a very long flight 11 hours in the way there and 9 on the way back to gatwick but it's worth it once your there!

The hotel is in a gated community with other hotels including the riu tequilla and riu playacar which you can use. It is completely safe as security are everywhere.

The hotel itself is very big it has 2 pools the chill out pool tends to be where the quiet English people like to be. But if you like it a bit more lovely there the main pool by the beach will be for you. We kept ourselves at the beach most of the days and just used the pools when we wanted a quick dip. The beach was amazing just as all the photos show!

When we went it was spring break and there was a lot of 18-21y/o Americans that were drinking a lot and very loud in the afternoon and evenings so I would choose to go another time of the year to avoid this maybe April or February.

We were very lucky with the weather it didn't rain once so March is a great time to go for that reason.

The food is incredible the buffet has everything you can imagine, yes after 10 days we got a bit bored of the food but I think we just couldn't eat any more!

The room itself was damp on arrival we set the air con on and that did make a difference but my clothes were still damp but in such a humid country they can't do anything about this.

With the humidity brings Mosquitos I got bitten 10 times on my first day! I got Mosquito band from the hotel shop and didn't get bit once more on my holiday so I do think they work.

We did two trips xcaret and the fat catamaran. I would recommend anyone to go to xcaret it's for all ages and we enjoyed it. The catamaran had a few young and a few older people on it, it was quite expensive for what it was the food was rubbish but the atmosphere was lovely.

If you go to this hotel you have to go to playa del carmen the main town I would suggest a taxi as it is a long walk it's only 3 dollars. There's lots to see and they have all the designer shops as well as the tourist ones the shop keepers do ask you to go in but you can just say no and they won't hassle you.

If your looking to book this hotel don't hesitate you will have a great time here!

A great spring break for our 18 year old son and his friends. SAFE with great security between the resort and the other resorts so they could go to the nightclubs with the young ladies they made friends with and make their way safely back to the rooms.
The entertainment and bar staff were GREAT and the beach is beautiful! However, the front desk staff was quite rude and seemed put out whenever approached, the attitude of one desk worker in specific was unacceptable. Not only did we walk in to our room one night to watch 4 cockroaches scurry across the floor but our friend ended up sharing her bed with one the following night! That is just a matter of the resort not keeping up with spraying. The rooms themselves were very basic, could tell there were some plumbing issues (sounds and smells), but cleaning staff did a wonderful job making the room up each day.
One strange thing to consider, and I don't know if the resort has anything to do with it to qualify, but everyone in our party uses iPhones and each and every one of us turned OFF our data roaming before we boarded the plane to completely avoid any data roaming. When we arrived everyone's phone picked up Telcel, the primary carrier in the market, all of our phones would read Telcel with full or nearly full signal even on the street leading up to the resort but once we entered the property everyone picked up "Movistar". People in our party tried to use the "free" Wi-Fi in the lobby they have little or no success, but I purchased a Wi-Fi package and did not attempt to use the free service, when we arrived home I called in to AT&T because my son's phone would not pick up LTE and the customer service representative started freaking out that my son and wife had racked up $300+ each in data roaming...even though their data roaming was turned off but yet I had 0 roaming usage, so there is something amuck.
Food was good for having to cook for such a large amount of people. Breakfast was best meal of day.

Room Tip: Front desk staff lowered the service from 5 to a 4. Value lowered to a 3 because we had to go out to...

Travelled with Thomson from Gatwick, Flight was excellant with enough leg room in standard class and cabin crew extremely helpful.

On arrival at the hotel check in was speedy and our luggage taken to our rooms straight the way. We stayed in room number 4104 which was excellant (this was a ground floor room) would definately recommend this block as its close to the beach and pools. It is worth emailing the hotel to ask for a room close to the beach as I understand some of the rooms were a little noisy.

The food was fantastic we tried all the restaurants I think our favourite has to have been the Mexican and a must is to try the tequilla. Food in the buffet restaurant was also superb and never seemed repetative which sometimes you can find on all inclusive.

The beach was lovely we spent most of our days on the beach rather than by the pool as the beach had a lovely breeze and we never had a problem getting a sunbed.

The Riu animation team work so hard they are constantly smiling and giving 100% as all the staff do at the Yucatan, nothing was ever to much trouble for any of them. Likewise the two Thomson reps at the Yucatan were great and seemed to have time for everyone however small your enquiry was.

We did eat out one night in the town (La Parrilla, Callee Constituyentes esquina 5th Ave) and it was great. We went to a mexican restaurant and had starter main course and a sweet as well as two beers one margharita and two tequillas. Total cost was 911 mexican peso which is approximately £45.00 (tip included in that price also). Taxi into the the resort is anything from around 70-90 peso (approx £5 each way), It made a nice change eating in the resort as the mexican bands also come round to the restaurants .

Return flight home was on the dreamliner wow is the only word i can say the leg room was fantastic would definately recommend the dreamliner to anyone.

Room Tip: Email the hotel for a room close to the beach. Research Mosquito repellants as there are lots of th...
