“Very Good Value Package”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2013

This resort hotel is set in an eco village of jungle featuring various mammals and birds. What a joy to look over your balcony and see an iguana staring up at you or watching a tree monkey swinging past. The hotel is currently undergoing a facelift but sadly it appears, will lose its Mexican feel.

Our room was comfortable and spacious but unfortunately had no privacy between bedroom and shower area, which is needed when sharing with a teenager and/or 3rd adult. One of the quietest air conditioning units ever experienced.

Quality and selection of food was excellent, one reason for choosing this hotel. The all inclusive element including drinks was first class and good value. Entertainment was excellent and the team worked very hard to make your holiday special.

Unfortunately, Mexico suffers badly from mosquitos and recommend their "Off" cream which has no strong odour and worked for us.

Room Tip: Accommodation blocks have ground, first and second floors but no lifts.Quieter rooms 2 blocks back f...

We stayed here April 12-19 with a group of 10 adults and had a blast. We have always been at the RIU Playacar but decided to try the Yucatan and we were not disappointed at all!

Our Delta flight from Flint, connecting in Atlanta was flawless and once we arrived in Mexico our transportation was waiting and we were on our way!

The RIU Entertainment Team did a fantastic job - Thanks to Diego, Odi, Danny and Fernando and the rest of the team, great job! Keep up the good work! Many different events/contests each day from darts, water balloon toss/catch, belly flop in the pool, maranga dance lessons pool side, water volleyball, aerobics, water polo....it is endless amounts of fun!

As we all know the hotel is going under a 3 month rennovation but re-opening end of July/early August. Can't wait to see the updates.

We stayed in Block/Building 5100 close to the pool and entertainment...If you like peace and quiet request a different area.

Food: Great variety even for the picky type person. Great bread to fresh fruit and fresh fish. Grouper was our favorite!

Rooms: Refrigerator is filled every other, so if you run out, just call the front desk.

Beach: Beautiful white sand and miles long. You can walk to Playa Car or even to Cancun.

Highly recommended - pack your bags and book the trip. You will not regret it!

We just got back from our trip to Mexico Riu Yucatan Playacar, we travelled from April 12 to 19. The shuttle ride from the airport to the resort was about 45 minutes, we didn't mind it as you get to see all the resorts on your way in and my daughter found everything so interesting. From the moment we arrived to hotel the staff was very welcoming and friendly. They were very helpful, the rooms were nice and clean, the housekeeping service was excellent for the price we are paying for this hotel. It was me, my husband and daughter travelling and we all had a great time. There is a lot of picky people on here complaining but we had an amazing time. The food was amazing, the best a la carte was the Asian one, the steak house was also very good! The pools were clean, staff were friendly and the beach was absolutely beautiful, no seaweed or rocks at all. A couple of the shows were boring but then there were a couple that were really good. They have little animals all over the resort, very cute.....every lunch time they had different bbq's going on pool side or fresh mexican food, the chefs would even come to you while your sitting in the pool to offer you food. All in all we had an amazing vacation thanks to the Riu Yucatan, would I recommend this resort to my family and friends? Hell ya in a heart beat! If we ever go back to Mexico we would love to go back to this resort!

Room Tip: We were in tower 9 which was away from the shows and quiet in the mornings if you want to sleep in.

I had excellent time in Mexico, however the hotel is just average

Reception staff are excellent.

The rooms are dated, the beds aren't very comfortable and there is a lot to be desired from housekeeping. I am not sure if they changed the sheets at all and the mini bar is not refilled as advertised. The landscaping is not very good so don't expect a nice view. On a positive notice all the rooms are centrally located thus close to the beach and to the restaurants as well.

The restaurants were ok, the main buffet is the best one although sometimes it is overcrowded. It could really use a hostess as it is difficult to find a table for more than 4 people. I was very surprised that there is no decent espresso in the resort at all.

There is a guy at the beach towel hut who looks as if he is in pain and seems to hate tourists. The pool is ok. The beach is great, however it is cramped and there are no umbrellas. Somebody decided to use palms instead of umbrellas which is a great idea, however 1 palm fits only 2-3 people, while RIU think it should fit 6 which is impossible. The other part of the problem is that the nearby RIU uses the same beach.

As you would expect the drinks are mainly ice and I couldn't help but notice that the bottles of the premium alcohol have been used for some time.

Staff are ok but they are not nice and polite as in other tourist attractions. I tipped them, however they don't seem to appreciate it at all (unlike other places), so I found myself doing it less and less often.

Stayed at the Yucatan for 2 weeks, and overall we had a fabulous time.

Flight - From Gatwick 11 hours going and 9.15hrs coming back. Thomson staff onboard - miserable as sin. In flight entertainment rubbish, you cant start a film at your convenience unless you upgrade, so you have to wait for a film to end and start again to watch it. Food was fine as aeroplane food goes.

Holiday....

Food - We did find it a bit repetitive and I felt the meat was a bit chewy and very salty, but for the price of a standard all inclusive holiday you have to manage your expectations to what you pay. They're catering for lots of nationalities and so there was always something to try but I have had better. We did try the steakhouse which we thoroughly enjoyed. If you try and sit in the same area each day for breakfast and evening meal the waiter/waitress will remember you and they'll bring your tea/coffee etc very promptly. We did tip between 20 and 50 pesos most mealtimes. (£2 - £5) And for this i felt we were really looked after.

Pool/Beach - The pool area wasn't for us - lots of families playing and loud youngsters drinking over the other end. If you enjoy a quiet tranquil pool this is not the place for you. Personally I don't want to look at the pool all day when i'm at the caribbean so we headed to the beach every day which was fab. This hotel does boast the best stretch of beach.

Beach - From the hotel head right for around 40 mins and the beach is very remote close to what they call a virgin jungle. Worth a walk. Head left for a 50 min walk and it takes you to Playa Del Carmen. I read on a previous review someone saying it was a 25 mins walk. I can only presume they were an Olympic athlete because i was spitting sand by the time i got back.

Trips - We did the dolphins and booked at the beach watersports hut which was with dolphinius. Had a great time but what they don't tell you is that you cant wear suntan cream when you enter the pool as it can affect the dolphins. As such there are showers for before you start the activites and my hubby, although olive skinned burnt to a crisp. We also did Tullum but we paid a taxi to take us, who waited 2 hrs for us, and then took us to some other beach that was stunning and waited another hour for us, and then drove through some lovely areas on the way home. We preferred this as you can come and go as you please instead of waiting for the tour coach to dictate when you've had enough and want to leave. We ended up paying him about £70 but for what we saw was still cheaper than 1 trip with Thomson. The concierge at the hotel spoke to the taxi driver to sort this for us, the taxi driver was Antonio, and he was so nice.

Got a mini bus from near Playa Del Carmens bus station to Cancun for around £2.50 each, takes 1 hour and they run 24 hrs. Get a taxi from hotel to the mini bus to Cancun and he'll know where to drop you off. Cancun is vast but an R1 bus circles the area for you to hop on and off for what works out at about 30p a go. Lovely shopping mall there. We did have trouble finding the drop off point to get back on the bus home, serious advice don't get on an R2 bus as it takes you to the locals place of residences - not a pretty sight!! Best get a taxi back to the drop off point. And don't forget if you want to use the RIU Cancun or Caribe for any drinks or lunch and a look around you can, but not the Palace.

Got a massage at the hotel near the beach - i enjoyed mine but my hubby said his was borderline painful!! When it was over they took the money and just walked off, didn't say a word to us and I didn't find them very friendly (but surprisingly they were all smiles the day before when we booked it).

Rooms - Lovely - no separate bathroom door, just a thin door to the toilet so you may want to think twice if privacy is important if you're travelling with friends or in a new relationship.
Again we tipped the cleaner between 20 and 50 pesos twice a week, and in fairness we came back to different animals made out of towels every day, they were lovely. We did wake up to no electricity one morning and rang reception. Maintenance arrived within 10 mins and fixed it. He did hang around as if waiting for a tip, even though it wasn't our fault the electric cut out. So they do like their tips.

Evening entertainment - I didn't see much of it but from what I did see it looked pretty good in comparison to other shows i've seen. The atmosphere at the outside entertainment area was really good, a few "look at me" groups but it made good people watching.

Grounds - Lots of wildlife, very pretty and lovely to watch. My only disappointment was not seeing the monkeys.
We went for a drink at the RIU Tequila - even though they offer beach buggies to the beach its too far for my liking, the RIU Playacar is beachfront and I would stay here, but neither hotels had the same jungle feel as the Yucatan.

We did speak to a guy who has stayed next door at the Iberostar Quetsal/Tucan and he felt that whilst he liked the Yucatan the one next door was nicer, so we may give that one a try next time.

Money - Thomson advised to take Pesos, which we did. But everywhere we went things were priced in dollars and they had to convert it to pesos for us. Funnily enough the Thomson trips price list was also in dollars! Pesos wasn't a problem but i would take American Dollars aswell as Pesos next time.

The Mexican people are the nicest nationality I have ever come across, and we will definitely go back. If I have missed anything please feel free to ask :)

Adios Amigos.

Room Tip: We were in block 4 which was halfway between the pool/beach and reception/restaurant.

I visited this hotel with my sister. It was the first time we had visited Mexico or gone on a long haul holiday and we didnt know how safe it would be to get out and about. We also worried that the hotel was due to be refurbished. We didn't have to worry about anything. We walked out of the hotel to a small shopping area, early evening. We got a taxi into Playa Del Carmen to get the ferry over to Cozumel and felt totally safe at all times.

We went on 5th April for one week - sunshine every day!

The hotel was beautiful. It was not obvious that a refurb is due, in that nothing is being scrimped on or closing down. The rooms are not modern, but I liked that as it felt Mexican! They were clean and had two double beds, so plenty of room. The bathroom is open but easy to arrange privacy to dress etc with family / friends. The room had a mini bar and fridge however no tea or coffee facilities which my sister would have liked. There were plenty of bars to get a hot drink from and you could take it to your room. Bring pj's if airconditioning bothers you... depends who you're sharing the room with.

Food was great, preferred the hotel restaurant to the speialist ones as they are still buffet style. Hotel food was lovely, lots of choice and varied; something for everyone.
Staff are so friendly and helpful. On arrival the conceirge took our bags up to the room and we gave a tip. We phoned reception at the end of the holiday and they were happy to take our bags back at the end of the holiday.

The pool was beautiful, steps from pool area down to the beach - amazing. Lie by the pool, watch the waves! It was a little frustrating that people put towels out to claim sunbeds but we did always manage to find a space. The men on the beach will get you a sunlounger if you need one. It was beautiful and such a relaxing place. There are plenty of activities around the pool if you want them, or equally just watch and not take part. There is also a pool that is not used for any activities if you want a quieter pool.
We loved the swim up bar and the jacuzzi.... cocktails and mocktails delicious.

We also went to Chichen Itza, bit of history and worth a visit.

I had an amazing holiday and would reommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in block four and found this to be far enough away from the bar area but close enough to g...

While the Yucatan is showing some wear, it is still a fabulous resort. Everything but the mattresses and pillows will be loved by all. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly, especialy Gracicela in the main buffet mornings. Once she learned our routines [ 1 day ], she always had my wifes coffee and our juices ready as soon as she saw us. Quick with that infectious smile of hers, this set the tone for our day. Never far away and always ready. All the staff was this way. I read where some people thought they were rude. I can only assume the ones complaining were probably rude themselves and very demanding. You know them, they are never pleased. The beach area is to die for as are the pools. Both have plenty of shade from palapas to palms. Both have open areas for all the sun worshippers. We never did without a lounger as there are plenty both areas. They strictly enforce the no saving of them. The buffet is one of the best with only the RIU Cancun better. The hot food is always hot, not warm. The Barcelo' can learn from the RIUs. The buffet offers many choices every night, all of which are delicious. So remember swimming to help keep some of the weight off. We ate a few times in the specialty restaurants, but also the nightly buffets as they were so good. Resevations are easy to get if you make them by 8:30 AM daily. The steak house offers a 6 oz. ribeye. The ones we were served probably were closer to 12 ozs. Also beause of the area, beach venders, hawkers are not allowed. Was this a pleasant surprise, not continually being bothered while ralaxing. Too bad other areas don't try this. While I have read others stating it is only a 20 or 30 minute walk to town, don't believe it. We tried an easy gait and it took 50 minutes in the heat. I am already thinking ahead to next year and where we will be going. But only if there is a RIU involved.

Room Tip: Do not take a ground floor terrace. There are little snakes on the grounds. While they are harmless...
