“Not a resort”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

Let me start off by saying that we have been to Playa at least 15 times over the last 20 years or so. The hotel is in a great loction on the famous 5th ave.The room was ok ,we never used the pool it is very small and in the shade, all inclusive is a bit of a joke a little open resturaunt type place across the road with very limited selection (I am not fussy I will eat almost anything put in front of me) if you want a drink same thing walk across the street and get one. The beach area is a bit of a walk but we like to walk small roped off area with a small bar and no food the guy working the bar was great he did what he could with what he had.
Bottom line is we didn't expect much and thats what we got. I felt sorry for the people that payed good money thinking they were getting a all inclusive resort. You can get a much nicer place on the beach for what they paid here.Or pay a lot less for a room and go out and eat and by a drink on the beach. Remember the pictures the hotels put on the internet can be very misleading.I saw one place had a nice pool picture and when you got there it was about 6 feet by 6 feet with no water in it.
So no i would not recommend it,and I'm easy to please.

Booking this hotel for 1 or 2 people gives you the same rate. While booking our vacation package, we had 1 room booked for 1 person as the 2nd person was coming in from a different location. When we checked in, everything was going fine. Except for the front desk asking for our confirmation # even though they had the keys and everything ready for us. They took my own personal copy of my travel documents which I have never seen any hotel do in my life. We even signed the hotel paperwork that indicated 2 people per room. Later, when our friend from out of town checked in at the desk, they charged him $100 as an extra person fee, saying that he wasn't on the reservation. Bullcrap!!!
After talking to other guests at the hotel, I heard they have experienced the same lying and dishonesty from the hotel employees as us and were charged hundreds of dollars for made up fees. These low-life employees are only pocketing the cash we give them.
Do not give the front desk any documentation!! They have everything they need already.
Do not trust the front desk employees at this hotel!! They are dishonest thieves.
Unfortunately, most of the people we ran across this year were that way (opposed to the previous 8 years). Be careful! Things have changed down there for the worse.

Room Tip: Ask for room in building across street

Well maureen and gary Mitchelson, we wanted a hotel with the mexican feel, Not a concrete block, Did my tripadviser thing, What a nice surprise, when i found the allinclusive premium package, and the location, so, off we went, a pree Christmas break, wasnt expecting much, i emailed the hotel in advance, ask for a quieter room if poss, few floors up. in main building. Was thrilled when we arrived, Was just what we wanted, got a very warm welcome, I think they could see how happy we were, Our room was the cleanes room we have ever had, i found myself looking for dust, we are well traveled, and loads of hotels under our belt, so can say THE cleanest, Next day we were asked if we wanted to change our room as a premium all inclusive we could, OH NO thank you very happy, We ask to look at the other buildings, two of them, across diferant streets, but loved where we were, gonna get noise, its in a town, WE never stopped smiling so everyone there were smiling back, If anyone could not understand what we were asking they asked someone else, I loved that in what seemed a small space they have made it look huge, all the little paths, and loads of vegetation and birds, little humming birds, could allways find somwhere to park ya bum, the package we got was the right way to do it, on a rainy day we sat in the living bar and people watched, The La Ceiba just across the road, was brilliant, did my breakfast eggs anyway i wanted, Also Living bar, round the corner, and OMG the coconut shrimp from the Tulip, which is where i ran down every morning for my take away coffees, Also i liked that we go for a walk up 5th avenue, and could just walk into the Hotel and get what we wanted, snack dinner or just even a drink, one evening we sat in the snack bar only us to under the palm trees and was drinking the wine out of the fridge, eating crisps, just helped ourselves, Plenty of trips to go on, just go to the desks in the hotel and he will get you to where ever you want, taxis everywhere, we went on a bus to Cancun sooooo very glad we wernt staying there, not mexico could have been in spain, OH NO, we were staying in the right place, was glad to get "home" Dont forget they rely on tips, so if you are a bit tight with giving, remember you get given nothing, dosnt have to be money, If you give a smile you get one back, give RESPECT and get it back, If you give a little tip you make a poor persons day, Remember not all people get a good wage, and would give anything to travel we are the LUCKY ones, and some people, because they part with their hard earned cash for a holiday, expect far to much, we never EXPECT anything, but what we got on this HOLIDAY at this Hotel, from the people everywhere we went, was PRICELESS. To all you wingers out there, if you are not happy with anything, go about sorting it out, with a smile, and remember, why should WE expect everyone in the world to speak ENGLISH, we are soooo lazy, learn a bit of the language, greet them in their own words, just a few words, shows we are trying, now THAT will get you a smile, Will BE BACK, oh yes can be sure of that, Thank you to everyone at EL TUKAN for a really wonderfull experiance,

Room Tip: Higher floors are a bit quieter. ground floor rooms can get noisey because all the cleaners have the...

my girlfriend and i wanted to spend new years in playa. we decided on a low budget hotel on the strip, since we spend most of our time walking around and eating out.
We ended up at the Tukan Hotel for 5 days. We were not expecting much since we were looking for a low budgeted hotel. But the Hotel Rooms were Horrible, there was mold and cracks everywhere in the bathrooms.(I wore sandals in the shower!!) The beds were rock hard and the sheets seemed dirty and the rooms were dark even with the window open and lights on.
I could go on but long story short, if you are looking for a low budget hotel, i would not recommend this Hotel.

The hotel location was nice because it is so centrally located around all of the shops and restaurants. The beach is in walking distance. I felt a little frustrated a few times because not everyone at the front desk speaks very good English so sometimes it was challenging to get your questions answered. There was no phone in our room. So every time we needed to make a local call we would have to go to the front desk and have to pay every single time we used the front desks phone. There's really nothing fancy about this hotel and its pretty simplistic but my goal of coming to Playa Del Carmen wasn't to hang out in my room the whole time. If you are looking for a 5 * hotel with 24/hr room service and on the beach this won't be for you. But if you are looking for a nice inexpensive hotel and plan to do a lot of excursions then this hotel would be perfect for you.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Premium rooms which were not fancy, I suggest you stay in a premium room or better.

This is budget hotel, but very clean, with good service, nice garden and convenient location. If you planning to spend more time at the beach and use room for sleep and shower - this hotel is for you.
Our room (711) maid Maria Elena deserves special thanks for her fantasy and very clean room every day!
