“Unpretentious and relaxed beach hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

Very well located with the beach at one end and buzzing 5th Avenue on the other. While our bungalow did not have ocean views it was private and faced the garden where we spotted interesting local critters foraging in the lush gardens. Our room was beautifully decorated with a king size bed and a soothing crisp white and blue color scheme. Each unit has a little patio (ours even had a ceiling fan) with 2 chairs and hammocks. The wi-fi is surprisingly better on the beach than in the rooms. There are no tvs in the rooms which was actually far less frustrating than all the hotels we encountered with tvs but almost no English channels. Breakfasts was great and service from breakfast to beach bar was always keen and friendly. Will very fondly remember my stay here.

Las Palapas is a gorgeous property with a world class beach! The staff are international, friendly and service minded. The hotel is on 5th avenue (34th St.) so you have walking distance to everything.
The bungalows are quaint and cozy. Simple but funtional with modern A/C equipment keeping the rooms at a comfortable temperature.
We had half-board and the flexibility of exchanging dinner for lunch is outstanding. This way we could dine in town every now and then and did not get too bored with the menu.
We would definitely come back!

The afternoon house-thump from Mamitas can be slightly annoying. However it only lasts from around 2-3pm to 5-6pm on a normal day. I would stay away from Las Palapas during the end of year festivals when Mamitas goes off (~27 Dec-13 Jan), which includes the BPM festival. If you are hear to part I still suggest a hotel 1-2 blocks in from the beach so you can get some rest.

Room Tip: A room on the north side of the property is slightly more insulated from Mamitas beach club

beautiful hotel on beach with charming bungalows as rooms. right in the middle of playa del carmen but at the same time secluded from the hustle and bustle. beautiful, memorable experience and trip based from this hotel. if you go during the bpm festival you will hear the music everyday from noon to midnight, which i didn't mind because that was the reason for my trip; great dancing to world class music in your shower. but if you dislike electronic/techno, do not stay at hotel during the week of bpm.

Hello New York,

Thanks for your review. We are sure Las Palapas was a good choice for you, specially if you came to BPM. Being beachfront and so close to beachclubs must have been an added value to your vacation and Festival experience.

We were part of a reunion group of approx 50 visit the hotel on Dec 25, 2012 for breakfast and dinner. They placed our tables right on the beach..it was absolutely a gorgeous setting. The service, servers and event coordinator were excellent and very accommodating. They allowed our group to use their beach area, which was clean and very relaxing and beautiful. The hotel grounds were well manicured and junglelike. While we didn't spend the night and go inside the rooms, the cabana's looked inviting.

Las Palapas could be – should be – a great hotel. But sadly it feels like a hotel that has passed its prime and lost its charm.

It is set in a beautiful location, with rooms either near the beach, in well-kept gardens or in the ‘jungle’. We eventually had a lovely and well-appointed room, but had to fight for it. Originally we were put in a sparse and badly situated room. It was only when I showed the staff the photos on my phone of the room grade we had booked (on booking.com and on the hotel’s own website) that he conceded we were not in the right room and we were moved. So, be sure of what you have booked and make sure the management do not try to downgrade you.

The main problem with the hotel, however, is the staff. There are some nice staff members but most do not seem happy to be there and have little experience. We had various moments where we felt like an inconvenience, rather than valued guests and we heard and witnessed similar stories from others. For example, in a ‘luxury’ hotel with three restaurants, it was a struggle one morning to get some milk from reception, which provides a flask of coffee for guests before the restaurant opens. ‘Have you got milk for my coffee?’ ‘No’. ‘Have you got powdered milk?’ ‘No.’ ‘Can you get milk for me from the restaurant just next door which is setting up breakfast?’. ‘No.’ ‘So there is no milk in this luxury hotel at 7.15am?’ Etc etc. Everything is too much trouble for the staff.

The beach area is also a little disappointing. You have to get up at (literally) the crack of dawn to get a sun lounger on the beach as the hotel rents them out per day to non-guests too. It’s certainly not the quite piece of paradise the website suggests. The pool is not great; the breakfast is good (but starts too late: if you have 20 guests queuing for you to open at 0730, it means you should open earlier!); the gym is well-equipped. Overall, if the management invested a little in the hotel and encouraged its staff to treat its guests better, this could be a lovely place. But as it is now, we’d probably say it’s not worth the high prices.

Room Tip: Room 115 is a Beautiful Room.

My husband and I traveled to Playa Del Carmen for the first time a few weeks ago. It blew all of our expectations out of the water and even trumped our honeymoon we took to Jamaica the year prior. Much of the credit goes to Hotel Las Palapas. The staff was warm and inviting from the start. Everyone speaks some degree of English, but we were delighted to hear that it was a hotel more visited by locals and Europeans (it gave me much needed practice for my so-so Spanish!). It's small, intimate feel was a breath of fresh air from all the monstrous resorts lining the rest of the beach. We became quick friends with the restaurant manager Miguel Riverza who gave us all kinds of advice on food, attractions, and any other questions we had. He also taught us a LOT about Mexican wine, how to drink and taste Tequilas, and some of the culture of the area. He truly made us feel like family. I will post pictures of our favorite wine that we actually had at the restaurant (recommended by Miguel of course!). Being from California we definitely have had multiple opportunities to fine tune our palates with amazing wines (my hubby calls me a wine snob) and I was surprised and delighted to find such delicious red wine in Mexico.
Our private cabana was a dream. Every night my hubby and I returned from dinner and relaxed on our front porch with a bottle of wine in our hammocks; listening to the waves crash on the beach. It quickly became on of our favorite spots of the trip. We came to Playa Del Carmen as strangers and left feeling like family thanks to Hotel Las Palapas. We will definitely be back and would recommend this resort to ANYONE traveling to Playa Del Carmen!

Room Tip: We were in a cabana that was 3 back from the beach and found it to be perfect. The beach was very b...

Greetings to California,

We are happy to read that Miguel and our team added something to your trip. Las Palapas is certainly a place where you can practice your spanish, since our team is always happy to help with a smile.

It's great to read that you enjoyed delicious Mexican red wine by the Caribbean, we hope you come back soon to repeat the story again.

Las Palapas is at the east edge of Playa del Carmen, providing it with good space and yet proximity to the town. Accommodation is in separated cabanas, some single-storey and some two-storey. Their interiors are fine, if a little dated and basic. The grounds are great, leading down past a beach bar to a superb sandy beach. The staff are helpful and friendly. Breakfast in the hotel is fine, dinner in the restaurant not so good. You can, as we did, walk into town to have dinner most days. Then again, eating in the town is not always smooth going.

Overall, the hotel is on the edge of being very good.

Room Tip: Try to be closer to the beach than the other direction.
