“The Royal Hideaway”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

Love, Love, Love The Royal Hideaway! It is a great place to get away and be pampered.
Everything is beautiful and the staff exceeds your expectations. Everyone is treated as if they are a VIP. This was our 3rd trip here, and not our last. All the restaurants are very good with a variety on the menu, great presentation and ambiance at each restaurant. I loved that the beach is back. So relaxing, I already want to go back.

We have been to Royal Hideaway over a dozen times and always come back with wonderful memories that we share with our friends. One of our friends had a specail birthday to celebrate and another couple had an anniversary so we were happy that they wanted to celebrate at our favorite place in Playacar - The Royal Hideaway.
We all had a fantastic time and the resort exceeded all of their expectations which was quite a plus for us since it was based on our recommendation.
The house concierage Sarah helped us with room selection and dinner reservations prior to our arrival so there were no problems. We had one birthday and two anniversaries which the villa concierage Edjuardo decorated their rooms and had bottles of champagne and wine in our rooms to celebrate with.
We had fabulous dinners at Ventanas, Pallazzo and Azia which were all memorable events.
Our entire trip was made even more memorable when a large group from Virgin Atlantic showed up to celebrate the inaugural nonstop london to Cancun service. It was fun to people watch the celebrities that were there for the festivities but even more impressive was that the regular folks like us were treated with the same level of courtesy and professionalism. A job well done by GM Arriaga and his staff!
It was great fun listening to the two other couples tell about their fantastic trip with all the excitement that Royal Hideaway brings to the story and memories to share!
We are looking at 2013 already!

Room Tip: Contact the RH concierage about two weeks out and request a center building room and make your dinne...

Very pretty place. Stayed here with a large group of friends. Because of that we got private rooms in a lot of the restaurants on site, which was great -- it all felt very VIP. The food was better than expected and elegantly presented at all the restaurants, and the breakfast buffet was wonderful...the fresh fruit! So good. I made the mistake of wearing jeans to one of the restaurants (with a fancy top and heels) and the maitre d' said "we don't normally serve jeans." (Well, good, b/c I didn't want to eat jeans!) I thought my normally very mild-mannered husband was going to climb over the counter and throttle the guy. Anyway, we weren't denied entry or anything and the meal was good. The service was very good other than that.

Unfortunately, the weather was awful. Torrential rain storms most of the time we were there; so windy the patio furniture was sliding around. We were the jerks in the infinity pool in the rain, and in the hot tubs in the rain, cowering under umbrellas on the beach...totally goofy, but darn it, we were going to make the most of the amenities.

One couple we were with had ants in their room. Ours was fine, though. Spotless and very comfortable.

The spa was fine. Pretty, and my husband enjoyed his massage. I just got a pedicure -- that room wasn't anything extraordinary, but it was a decent pedicure.

Going into town for some barhopping was fun and everyone we encountered was courteous and friendly.

We just recently finished our vacation at the Royal Hideaway and it was absolutely breath taking! My father and I took a well needed vacation and this was just the place to escape! The atmosphere of the hotel is amazing and for us is very hard to top due to the fact that we've come to mexico 6 times. The staff was very helpful and very kind hearted! Our thanks especially goes out to the waiter/bartender Berdandino! He came to offer us drinks and food every chance he had throughout the week! He was very polite and such a hard worker! The same goes for the rest of the staff at the Royal Hideaway! The food was scrumptious and prepared very delicately by the chefs! We enjoyed each and every meal we had! The only thing that was a bit of a burden was booking the reservations every night for dinner but it was only a slight abnormality. We loved our hotel room! It was perfectly designed and decorated, lots of storage, clean and a beautiful scent! Overall it was a great stay and i would recommend this hotel to anyone if they were visiting mexico!!

Room Tip: if you can try asking for a balcony with a hammock they are so relaxing in the night time

Dear fran d,

Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to share your experience. We’re thrilled to hear your comments about our staff and we’ve shared your review with our team, including Bernardino. Our team works diligently to create an unforgettable experience by providing attentive service and a resort that is relaxing and luxurious.

We are delighted that you enjoyed our restaurants, as our Executive Chef Eugenio Villafaña is always creating delectable menus to enhance the culinary experience for our guests. Yes, reservations are required at each of our restaurants. We always recommend making them prior to arrival by emailing us directly: services@mx.occidentalhotels.com. We will gladly make the arrangements, however our restaurants are very popular and reservations are based on availability.

We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

My husband and I just returned from our Royal Paradise which was located at the Royal Hideaway. We have been to the Cancun/Riviera Maya eight times...Each resort has been different with pluses and minuses....until now....we will not visit another resort because the Royal Hideaway is the best of the best....5 star everything.
The transportation arranged through our travel agency was horrible. Always take a taxi or other private transportation. Our concierge told us a taxi is about 50 dollars one way. We were rather uptight when we arrived but then our paradise began...Met by the bell captain with champagne and a refreshing towel....our tensions started to melt away as we were guided to our room in Villa 30 with an amazing concierge Laita that took care of questions and directions. (the reviews are right....the music from the Riu resort was very noisy and irritating...bring earplugs).
I had contacted the resort about dinner reservations since we were coming in late and we enjoyed the Italian Restaurant Pallasso. The service at every restaurant was unbelievable. We were treated as 5 star guest at each venue. The attitudes of all servers made each restaurant first class with us...we had read some poor reviews of the quality of food....I don't know where these people ate but it wasn't the Royal Hideaway restaurants.....
The room was wonderful with big king size bed...quality everywhere in the room
The resort was not full so we had open lounge chairs on the beach and around the pools....My husband loved the relaxing pools that were placed around the resort. One day we even had lunch brought to our lounge chairs on the beach from The Deck restaurant.
Breakfast every morning was amazing at the Spice Restaurant. Fresh fruit, coffee, mimosas, omelets, I miss it so much already...keep waiting for someone to bring me my coffee and mimosa.
We enjoyed the pianist at the Piano Bar and the musical duos at the Bar Allegria. We would like a little more entertainment since you have to stay up till about 11 pm due to the loud noisy entertainment at the Riu next door.
We did not take any tours because we didn't want to leave the resort at all and we have done most of the tours that were offered at other resorts.
The maid service was so amazing....at some resorts the maids stay in the rooms, watch TV, etc. and we can't access our room forever....not our maid...she was quick, efficient and designed the most adorable towel animals everyday..and then returned for additional cleaning/turn down in the evening..
Don't forget to tip all these wonderful employees...We received a royal treatment every day.
So we are already planning our next trip except we will stay longer that 7 days....we are going for 10 days next time....Can't wait to return to our Royal Paradise.

Room Tip: We love our concierge Laita but I would ask for a room away from the Rui resort. It was so noisy th...

Dear schoolmarmgwen

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor. Our goal is to treat all guests like royalty and provide exceptional service. Laita is an incredible member of our team, and she was thrilled to hear your feedback.

Our executive chef and food and beverage manager create exciting and unique menus for each our six restaurants and we are glad you enjoyed them.

We strive to provide a relaxing, tropical oasis for our guests, and we also understand the importance of fun nightlife. In addition to The Piano Bar and Bar Allegria, we also have Club Royale, a dinner theatre that features a four course dinner and shows weekly. Also, we will happily arrange a five-minute taxi ride to Playa del Carmen for more nightly entertainment.

We can’t wait to see you again in sunny Mexico!

Just returned from the most amazing vacation ever. The entire staff exists to ensure that my stay was everything I dreamed it would be. They are the most friendly, courteous and caring individuals we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The champagne arrival experience was first rate. Everyone from the bell captain to wait staff to our own personal Concierge, Gerrardo, were amazing. Gerrardo ensured that our 30th anniversary would never be forgotten, beginning with our suite being decorated in balloons, to a personalized card, to well wishes inn the daily post, to a bottle of champagne at our dinner. Gerrardo was absolutely perfect and I wished we could have brought him home with us. Jessie, the activities coordinator kept us busy with here great water aerobics, Mexican cuisine and salsa lessons, just to name a few. We all know that food at all-inclusives is so-so at best. That is NOT the case at Royal Hideaway. The food was incredible with beef flown over from the UK and prepared expertly with a spectacular presentation. The only thing that was wrong about the trip was that it came to an end! Thank you to everyone we came in contact with at Royal Hideaway...you are absolutely amazing and the epitome of customer service and experiential treatment. I would rate you at the very top of any list and look forward to traveling back to Mexico again in the near future.

Room Tip: We were in Villa 26 right in the center of hotel. It was quiet enough for sleeping, but a steps away...

Dear asully123

From all of us at Royal Hideaway, thank you for choosing our resort to help celebrate such a special occasion. It is our goal to provide all guests with an unforgettable five-star experience. Thank you for recognizing the top notch service provided by Gerardo and Jesse. We’ve shared your compliments with them and their department.

I’m happy to hear that you enjoyed the culinary experience at our resort. Our executive chef and food and beverage manager work very hard to provide a delectable experience. We offer a wide variety of specialty restaurants including the Palazzo (Italian), Azia (Pan-Asian), and Spices (Caribbean & Mexican). We also recommend The Chef’s Table at Las Ventanas, for a special add-on experience. The Chef’s Table provides guests with the opportunity to interact with Chef Villafaña and watch a live feed from his kitchen as he prepares a special delicacy just for them.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Riviera Maya in the very near future!

My wife and I returned from a week vacation at this wonderful resort last week, and I already miss it. Everything about this place is first class. From the moment we reserved the a la carte restaurants on line, to the arrival in Cancun and then to the reception at the RH, everything went smoothly.
The Beach. The resort was not full, and therefore the beach had plenty of room, as did the swimming pool. Great, white sand, beautiful sea colours, nice breeze: paradise!
The Food: all the restaurants are great, but especially the Ventanas, excellent food, excellent presentation. We enjoyed being served by Omar there. But all waiters were amazing: thanks to Isis (expecting a baby), Isis (another one, who kept calling me by a different version of my last name, but she was so good I never bother correcting), Jorge, Laura, and so many others equally good.
The Room: our room (luxury room) was very nicely appointed, with all the amenities we could think of. Although located in Villa 30, adjacent to the Riu Playacar (very noisy) we were able to sleep well in our comfortable king-sized bed. Layta, our concierge, was fabulous. Thanks for everything Layta.
Entertainment: not much, but then we knew about this from reading the reviews. Maybe a place to dance a bit would have been nice.
The Grounds: immaculate, clean, beautiful.
The Weather: although the forecasts kept on saying thunderstorms and rain, we had 7 days of sun.
Conclusion: I would recommend this resort wholeheartedly to anyone. It is that gorgeous. We will definitely be back.

To the management of RH: keep it up.

Dear Nedo D,

Thank you for choosing Royal Hideaway for your home away from home in the Riviera Maya. We were delighted that you enjoyed the attentive and professional service from our staff, as that is always our goal. Omar, Isis, Jorge, Laura and Layta work very hard and were thrilled by the recognition.

Your comparison of Royal Hideaway to paradise reinforces our dedication to maintaining our beautiful property. We aim to provide an oasis-like atmosphere, so our entertainment is low key. We do have live music or karaoke every night in our Bar Allegria, in addition the Piano Bar and Club Royale, our dinner theater. Also, Playa del Carmen is only a five-minute taxi ride from our resort and offers an extensive variety of nightlife options.

We’re delighted to hear your feedback about the dining experience for our guests. Our Executive Chef Eugenio Villafaña is always enhancing our menus, and for an extra special experience we recommend The Chef’s Table at Las Ventanas. With this add-on dining experience guests have the opportunity to interact with Chef Villafaña and watch a live feed from his kitchen as he prepares a special delicacy just for them.

Thank you for recommending our hotel and we hope that you will visit us again soon.
