“A perfect oasis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

My husband and I stayed at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba for 4 nights in late July. It was a spectacular and memorable treat. Upon arrival (~30-40 minute drive from CUN airport), it was like we had entered into another world, a beautiful private oasis.

We stayed at a pool villa (400s area right by the hotel lobby/restaurants). Our villa was fantastic and extremely private. Our private pool/outdoor area was large enough that we had little reason to even leave our room at times!

Service was outstanding throughout our stay. Staff members were friendly and attentive at ALL times. We spent a lot of time chatting with various staff members and getting to know them. There's really nothing else that needs to be said outside of what everyone else has already said. TOP NOTCH.

One confession - we didn't expect much out of the dining options at BT after reading some older reviews. We consider ourselves foodies and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals on the property. We dined at Sands and Tamarind. We recommend the ceviche at Sands. Our Tamarind meal was one of our best meals of our trip (shrimp risotto appetizer and two delicious fish entrees) in a beautiful backdrop, with perfect service. We did not dine at Saffron as we had no interest in Thai cuisine while in Mexico, though the outdoor dining area there looked beautiful. We spent the other nights dining out at downtown Playa del Carmen as we wanted to dine at the local taquerias and restaurants as well.

Be sure to do the eco-tour - we really enjoyed it thanks to Adrian, his watchful eye spotted the most unique wildlife of Quintana Roo for us. We luckily got a private tour by him as another group didn't show up. After cruising by Fairmont and Rosewood , my husband and I both agreed that Banyan Tree was by far the best out of the three Mayakoba properties.

Room Tip: Our pool villa in the 400's area was directly next to the hotel lobby/restaurants/main pool. Mor...

Dear Guest:
It was indeed a pleasure to read your review and to know that you truly enjoyed the natural beauty of our facilities and the service provided by our people. Thank you very much for outlining the quality of our restaurants, in particular Tamarind, our western fine dining facility.
I am also happy that you enjoyed the eco tour by boat with Adrian. He is very knowledgeable and makes the trip a unique experience. I have passed on your comments and he was absolutely delighted.
Hopefully you will find an opportunity to come back to our “Sanctuary of the Senses”. I would give all of us an enormous pleasure.

Cordially,

I admit: I am one picky traveler. But Banyan Tree continues to impress, again and again.

We first traveled in February 2012. The place is set up as a bunch of individual villas, which I appreciate for the privacy. The rooms are outstanding -- new, beautiful decor, very clean. In February 2014, we took another trip to the area, and decided to stay at Nizuc, which is a new place closer to the airport. Our trip was only for 3 nights, so our thought process was that we should stay close to the airport to maximize our time. Big mistake. Nizuc was a disaster -- kids everything, room overlooking a loud power facility thing, horrible service. The first morning we were there, I called Banyan Tree, booked a room, and told my husband we were switching hotels. Ahhh ... it was like a wave of peace came over me as we drove to Mayakoba, checked in and settled in by the beach.

The beach/pool is a bit far away, so I guess if I had one complaint, it would be that it's not ocean-front ... you have to take a buggy or bikes over to the beach.

I spent 5 days in this hotel with my family. And even though it was amazing, I would recommend banyan tree for couples. There were many romantic places to hang out and activities to do with your respective other (Kept missing my boyfriend everywhere I went).
The villas are really big, with their own pull, Jacuzzi, out door stone bathtub and even an extra separate room to hang out in.
The massages, given by Thai massage therapists themselves, are incredible, I recommend the full body Thailand classic.
They go the extra mile in everything, giving complementary water bottles (everywhere), lemon ice cream (on the beach), and sometimes a cocktail and fruit (beach as well). They give you all the extras you want, lend you a beach bag, make-up bag, free wifi everywhere, etc. In other word they pamper you to death, as it should be for what you're paying for these place.
Also, don't miss the boat ride, there are many birds and other interesting animals to watch from the comfy boat.
And of course the beach, it is as every beach in playa should be, plain beautiful! Water is warm and sand like powder, though there are some patches with seaweed (i used those water shoes, and was happy after that).
Will definitely come back!!

Like a world away, very relaxing. The classic banyan tree oriental styling is wonderful. All the rooms have pools which are great. The service has a bit of the American influences, shame it doesn't keep more of the Asian ones. Certainly the best of the Mayakoba resorts. The closes is Rosewood it's newer and more hip but misses the charm and homely nature of Banyan.

As an event planner in NYC, I had very high expectations for my destination wedding. My husband and I had been to Banyan Tree several times, so it was a natural decision for us. Our Romance Coordinator, Diana, was a dream come true... She was attentive to every detail of our vision (and there were many!) and executed them flawlessly. Our guests were so impressed by Banyan Tree's private villas with pools, the amazing food, and the beautiful beach resort that many of them are planning return trips. We are planning to celebrate our first anniversary there!

Room Tip: The Sanctuary Pool Villa is worth the upgrade from Luxury Pool Villa because it offers a separate st...

We spent 9 nights here and stayed in one of the Townhouses with our 2 boys aged 9 and 7. We all loved it from the moment we arrived, Valeria made us feel so welcome.
The buffet breakfasts are wonderful, so much variety and lots to suit everyone. Our servers Roger and Manuel at Oriente were so friendly and attentive.
We spent most days in the pools which were pretty quiet. At Reflections Alexander and Carlos looked after us most days and were so friendly. At Sands Jesus looked after us my boys thought he was hilarious!
We had the most amazing time, ate out at Rosewood a couple of times - restaiurants we would recommend would be Saffron, Agave Azule and The poolside restaurant at the Rosewood but food by the pools was great to.
A must do is the Ecotour, our guide was so knowledgeable (I think Adrian) and we all learnt so much. It is genuinely such an amazing setting. A must go!

Room Tip: For families the 3 bedroom townhouses are the best option as the others have separate entrances for...
