“Exceeded expectations in everyway”

We are just getting back from our trip to the banyan tree. It was simply awesome.
Food: great service especially the morning brunch. For a buffet style it is totally gourmet. The restaurants are expensive but again the food and service is excellent. Only negative is that when making reservations it is sometimes difficult to get the time you want. However, every time we went to eat the places would be less than half full?
Rooms: totally cool. Every room is like its own little suite. Very clean, large and if you need more of something like coffee or bottled water it's there in under 5 minutes.
Pool: not the type of place to go if you want to hear blaring music and drunk people doing chicken fights in the pool. Elegant. Great lunch (rec the shrimp burrito. Had it everyday it was so good). Never seemed too crowded.
Spa: best massage I have ever had. Period.
Intangibles: large resort. You have to travel by bike or golf cart to get most places, however they were not an inconvience. Staff was more than accommodating. Rooms were one of the coolest and most unique we have ever stayed in. Our trip and experience was worth every dollar.

My husband and I visited the Banyan Tree Mayakoba for the first time this December for our babymoon. We were very pleased with the resort - our room was beautiful and the grounds and facilities and amenities were excellent. The staff was so nice and accommodating and friendly, they made the stay even more enjoyable. We loved the beach and also the pools were very nice and again the bartenders and servers were really nice. As a couple that works in the hospitality industry it was such a treat to be on the receiving end of such great service.

We were very fortunate to have a week at this marvellous hotel and were delighted we did.
When we arrived we were asked whether we would like to wait for an upgraded room (which we did) and were given a townhouse with roof top pool.
This was magnificent and very luxurious!
Having a seperate lounge from the bedrooms meant that when I got up early to go birdwatching, I was able to make a coffee without disturbing my wife and daughter. The bathrooms were fantastic and my only grip was that the roof top pool was not heated so too cold for us to use.
The location of the hotel is brilliant - particularly if nature is your thing.
The hotel (and adjacent Fairmont and Rosewood) has been built within a protected ecosystem meaning that the birds, plants etc were amazing. Highlights included the free one hour boat ride through the mangroves and seeing White Nosed Coati playing as a family on the golf course!
I am not a golfer but the course looked fantastic and can easily be accessed.
Food was top end price wise but was superb at all four restaurants we used.
Staff were exemplary - all helpful and friendly. No request was too much trouble and everything was handled quickly and smoothly.
The resort itself is very pretty and away from it all yet it was a £12.50 taxi ride away from Playa Del Carmen if you wanted somewhere cheaper to eat or to shop.
This is top end price wise but is faultless!

Room Tip: Get a 2/3 bed towhouse if you can!

We have traveled to many luxurious resorts and The Banyan Tree Mayakoba is by far the best of the best. The villas are spacious, beautifully appointed and exceptionally clean. Each villa has a "plunge pool" and two floor to ceiling sliding doors that open the bedroom into the private courtyard area, where there is additional seating both shaded and in the sun. We traveled during a time of the year when it wasn't very crowded (1st week of Dec, staff said they were at 30% occupancy) and it was quiet and peaceful. The food was top notch and we had no problems eating the fruits and vegetables. Everything was fresh and delicious. Our best meal was at Saffron, the Thai restaurant. Not only was the food spectacular but the ambiance of the dining experience was unmatched. The villas are not on the beach but that didn't bother us at all. They have bike rentals ($6 per day) and it is a very easy 5 minute bike ride to The Sands beach club. You can also get a ride in the many "buggies" (golf carts) on the premises. The resort is connected to two other resorts via a nature trail/bike path, which we rode. it's a little craggy/uneven but do-able. There was a limestone cave that we toured (with a staff member who literally seemed to be sitting there waiting for guests to walk by) and lots of beautiful scenery. The breakfast buffet was incredible. Everything you can imagine was available from traditional American fare to Asian and Mexican options. Fresh juices were always available and never disappointed. The most noteworthy part of the trip was the service--it was unmatched. The staff is polite every minute of the day and are at your beckon call. They knew us by name within hours of our arrival and were friendly and respectful. We spent 5 days there and didn't want to come home. I can honestly say that if I never go to another vacation locale, I'd be happy visiting The Banyan Tree every year.

Room Tip: Our room was 105, which was a few hundred feet from The Oriente (where breakfast is served), was ver...

I never write reviews. But felt this particular resort deserves to be acknowledged. We had a 5 day stay over Thanksgiving weekend. Occupied a 3 bedroom beachfront villa. The stay was impeccable from every perspective. The villa itself, the décor, the staff, the restaurants, the service - everything 5 stars plus. And what a beautiful place! The grounds of the resort are most impressive. The staff are friendly, attentive, and clearly are very well trained to make your stay the most pleasant and relaxing experience. Can't wait to come back for another stay at Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Would not stay at any other place in Riviera Maya, going forward.

We stayed in a Spa Pool Villa and it was perfect. It was quiet and the service was one of the best my wife and I had ever received. We have traveled oversea and to numerous places in the US and the Banyan Tree is unique among all of them. We arrived on the last day of the PGA event at the golf course on the grounds and the hotel was at capacity. Neither of us saw more than 10 people for the first three days and heard no one even when we swam in our personal pool.
One of the best example of how great this place provides high quality service is we had only one issue during our stay. A switch in the jacuzzi stopped working. I called the front desk and someone came to fix it after about 3 minutes. After another couple of minutes he had noticed that it was not the switch but another part. He excused himself and said they had the part in maintenance and would be right back. After another 5 minutes he was back fix it and asked if there was anything else. So I had him increase the temp a little. All told it took less then a half hour. Now at most hotels it would have taken a lot long or maybe not even the same day. That would have great but the front desk called us to apologize that the man had not had the part with him. They had felt that they had failed us.
The brunch was very good and the staff that worked there learned our name and room number after the second visit. The fresh juices were wonderful. Every day there was special combination for example watermelon and mint. We had also ate at Tamarind, Agava Azul in the Rosewood, and in room dining which all were excellent. This is a place I will come back to someday soon.

My boyfriend and I (early 30s) stayed here five nights over Thanksgiving week. It was not a cheap stay, but we felt it was well worth the price--it achieved near perfection.

The service--from the groundskeepers, to the servers, to the buggy drivers--are all warm and welcoming. And, by way of example, when I fell off my bike, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the resort delivered me a bouquet of "get better" flowers. Banyan Tree offers nice finishing touches throughout guests' stays, such as cool scented towels at dinner, coconut ice cream bites after lunch, and unique juices and teas.

The Mayakoba grounds are huge, and although we were initially skeptical about being a mile or so from the beach, we enjoyed the private villa so much that we welcomed the buffer between the villa and beach. The beach has a pool that overlooks the beach with a swim up pool and good options for lunch (a la carte tacos were our favorites).

For dinner, you must try Saffron and sit outside on the pier. Beautiful view of the stars over the lagoon. Thai food that is not to be missed. Also visit the Rosewood next door for dinner (but make reservations!). The Mayakoba resort offers transportation between the three resorts, which gives you more dinner and drink options.

The spa is world class. We thoroughly enjoyed the massages.

I will echo others' comments that breakfast selections are very limited. Your choices are (1) a very pricey (albeit very nice) breakfast buffet or (2) room service. We would have loved a casual a la carte option on the beach or grab-and-go stop.

There is no party scene and, although the other travelers are friendly, travelers generally seem to be there to rejuvenate and not to make new friends. This is ideal for romantic getaways, just be advised if you are looking for a more social place that you may not find it here.

Room Tip: We stayed in a spa pool villa (I think one class up from standard). Spectacular. We used our private...
