“Wonderful Honeymoon!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2014

My wife and I had the most amazing honeymoon at the Grand Velas in Riviera Maya. The food at every restaurant was second to none! Not your typical all inclusive! Particularly the French restaurant!! Amazing!! The Suites were HUGE and our Oceanview was incredible! We also had a great plunge pool on the balcony. The beach was great and we were in the Grand Class section, so adults only. This hotel was only a short 10 minute cab ride from Playa del Carmen, which had more shops than we expected. We will definitely be back! Many thanks to our Travel Agent, Tricia Borges at Travelwizard.com. She listened to our needs and picked the perfect hotel for us!!!! We plan to go back for our Anniversary!!

I am glad that we have become that special place for you after enjoying a wonderful honeymoon with us. We took into consideration the many aspects during the resort´s planning stages and our focus was on quality and luxury for our future guests. The ample and luxuriously equipped suites that you mentioned, our five gourmet culinary selections for dinner and the high caliber of service all combine to generate wonderful comments such as yours. It will definitely be our pleasure to host you again, not only on your first anniversary, but for many more to come. Thank you for sharing your happiness with everybody on TripAdvisor and a special thanks to Tricia Borges for her fine recommendation for your dream honeymoon.

Congratulations and a special hug for you both in Salinas, California.

The hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful. The rooms are spacious & clean. The service is what separates this resort from other all-inclusives we have visited. You are assigned a concierge from the minute you arrive who will take care of everything you may need. When you arrive at the pool, you get a pool concierge assigned to you as well. The main pools near the ocean are crowded so service is not as fast & amazing but still very good. The Zen pool is where we hung out mainly. We has Oscar & Bautista taking care of us. We loved loved loved them! They were friendly & attentive with great personalities, always smiling & always in motion to provide great service. We also met Nicole who was working there just for the summer. She was most adorable sweetheart, always smiling, with a great view on life & planning her future to study in Canada. We had Wilbur as our waiter @Pilaf whose wit & charm made our delicious dinner even more enjoyable & pleasant with his impeccable service. Nayeli@ Chaka also made our breakfasts fun & delightful. Jaime at Bistro took care of us & our friends for lunch. His charm, cheerfulness & humor made our lunch one of the most pleasant times there. Aaron at the front desk was so pleasant, polite, & helpful. Our concierges Fernando, Angel & Fredy-thank you for taking care of us.
Now, for the resort! The food was great @Pilaf & Sin-Lin & Bistro. Everywhere else was okay but not fantastic. I agree with other reviewers regarding the feel for having to tip. Every time you go to any restaurant before you leave they bring you a check for what it supposedly would have cost-even though it was free! The bills were outrageous. For me & my husband & our 14 year old son, dinner would be upwards of $500! The food was good but not that good! Drinks are not watered down & are quite decent. They also use top quality liquor. All in all we would definitely go back:-)

For the second time around, I was wowed again. We stayed in the Grand Class on our first trip without kids, and the Ambassador on this trip. I was extremely happy to find our room was on the bottom floor and walking distance to the pool. This made everything much easier with young kids who loved the pool. The Grand Class is the adults only resort side and the rooms are a little bigger with a pool on the patio area. Very classy as well. From the time you step off the bus at the resort to the time you go home, you will find the service is amazing. The staff is extremely well trained and make sure you are taken care of. The rooms are extremely clean and impressive. We spent most of our time at the pool, as our kids loved the shallow pool 2ft. pool and the ledge they could jump off of for the deeper pool. Raul Evan and Miguel Caamal were both amazing with the service at the pool. They always had the drinks and food delivered in an extremely timely manner. They also would remember what drinks we liked and would fill our bucket with a couple of cervezas. Manuel Ortiz was also extremely friendly and made sure if you needed anything, he would get it. He was truly personable and would make sure to come around to see how things were going. Food was great! Beach was amazing and well groomed. The water was a little rocky. If we were to make reservations to restaurants this would be the order- Piaf, Bistro, Lucca, Frieda, Sen Lin We will definitely be heading back to this resort in the future! By the way the Spa water treatment is exceptional. Well worth the money to experience it!

Room Tip: Rooms near the Grand Class would be quieter. The best rooms for assessibility to the pool would be...

Everything about this resort is top notch. The service really is over the top. One example: Our family was heading out to the town of Playa to do a little shopping. As we left our room on the third floor our concierge, Zoe. (each floor is assigned their own concierge) noticed that there was a broken glass outside of the elevator. She quickly grabbed house cleaning to clean it up before we got to that portion of the hallway. Next thing I notice is her greeting us at the front entrance of the hotel to get a cab ride. She must have sprinted down the stairs and to the front to get ahead of us. Many more incredible stories of service like this on on four day stay.

Overall very impressed once again by Grand Velas. My family and I stayed there when the resort 1st opened ~5 years ago and I was impressed that they have kept up the exceptional level of food and service. We've also stayed at the Velas in Puerto Vallarta.

The highlights...
- Food - Mostly excellent everywhere. David at the Azul was great! Happy with a smile every day. The Azul buffet was not quite as over the top as it was 5 years ago but still very nice. Also the included wine selection at all resturants was limited compared to our last stay but what they offered was very good.
- Service - Even better than the 1st stay 5 years ago. Floor butler/concierge (Dinorah) was EXTREMELY helpful and attentive. Always there to help.
- Pool service was always exceptional lead by Santiago. Never waited long for anything.
- Room and grounds. Impeccably kept and always clean.

The Okay...
- Azul and Lucca were just okay for dinner. Nothing special and we did not go back a second time during the week. (Azul for breakfast and lunch is excellent).

- When we 1st arrived the lobby was under construction. Not a big deal but 1st impression was not like our 1st stay. Work was complete in 3 days.

- Resort might be a little too quiet for families with teens. For us it was great but others may expect more in terms of evening activities and shows.

Overall a great stay. We will be back.

... but not "five diamond" IMO.

We'll get the two negatives out of the way first:
1. Our check-in was a disaster. Fortunately, I kept copies of everything and was able
to finally -- after alot of unnecessary drama -- get the exact rooms and prices that Irma Perez,
the Vacation Specialist who handled our booking, had promised us in writing two months ago. Management never apologized for the chaos and would only say that the confusion resulted from another family having the same last name. ??? BTW, we have a very peculiar last name. If your last name is rather common ... uh, Smith ... Jones ... you are in our prayers.
2. The beach itself was above average but the swimming was borderline dangerous. The ocean floor all along the Riviera Maya was shallow and rocky. Water shoes are a must.

Now, to the good stuff:
1. The service was outstanding! Kudos to Rodrigo and Santiago (big pool), Fernando and Mar
(beach) and Natalia (conceirge). They exceeded all expectations.
2. The big pool (a/k/a Ambassador area) is arguably the nicest pool we have ever experienced in our 25 years of traveling.
3. Our two Ambassador rooms were elegant, fairly quiet and well located. My wife and I had a king bed and our teenagers had two queen beds in their adjoining room. We were in rooms 2003 and 2004, overlooking the beach and very close to the big pool. This proved to be a very desirable area of the resort.
4. If you are a golfer, by all means, take your clubs! It is worth the hassle. I highly recommend you play Playacar and/or Iberostar (home of "The Big Break"). Both courses are within 15 minutes of the resort and your green fees (about $120 p.p.) include the roundtrip taxi. Both courses are truly incredible ... comparable to Hawaii or Scottsdale. You will not regret this
decision.

In closing, here a few traveler's tips to consider:
1. Take about $200 in U.S. ones and fives. Tipping is encouraged and the staff members strongly prefer the American dollar over the Mexican peso.
2. Book your spa session several days in advance. The spa fills up quickly during vacation season.
3. The resort food is above average -- a little too gourmet for my taste -- but better than most
all-inclusives we have visited. If you are looking for a diversion, go next door to The Fairmont
and try their steak and seafood restaurant. It is really, really good!
4. Finally, we stayed 7 nights but, realistically, 5 nights would be ideal. This place is expensive March thru August. If we go back, we will target October or February so we can
save about 50%.

>>> This is a great resort, by any definition. Five diamonds? You decide. <<<

Room Tip: The Zen/Jungle rooms are removed from the primary resort area. We overheard several people complai...

Overall the resort was clean, pretty, and the staff was super friendly. The food was just average (best were Piaf and Lucca; worst was Sen Lin and Azul). Really disliked that we felt like we needed to tip everyone. They really should include this in their price or make it mandatory no tipping. Lastly the Zen section was MUCH better than Ambassador. We were originally disappointed we weren't able to upgrade next to our friends in the Ambassador section and we were so happy we didn't by the end of the week! Faster service, less crowded, lovely pool, gorgeous!! Beach area was just okay but to be expected in this area.
