My husband and 2 friends recently returned from a 4 night stay at Villa Xuxu of the Villas Amarte (see Spa Hideaway Amarte here on tripadvisor) next to the Maroma Hotel and Spa. For one night, we had dinner at Ambar since we wanted to see the Mandarin Oriental property and also check out this restaurant.
The restaurant is a prime example of high modern design. Very impressive. Tables were laid out with plenty of space, so there would be no chance to feel crowded here. Service was impeccable. The food was tremendous. The menu had diverse and incredibly selections--one meal didn't allow us all to try the various things we wanted to sample!
Our only negative was that the restaurant didn't really feel Mexican in any way. They said that it was supposed to be a Mexican infused Asian restaurant, but the Mexican feel to the food was lost on me--though local ingredients were certainly used. Not everyone will care about that, of course, but for me, when traveling to a foreign country, I prefer to sample the local cuisine, even if interpreted in a different way. This felt like Asian food slightly tweaked in name to seem Mexican. Not the same thing.
On the other hand, dinner was amazing. Certainly, it was my favorite dinner of the 4 we had in the area (the other 3 being at the Maroma Resort, which was also very good).
If we were back in the area, we would certainly go back.
