“A little taste of Cuba... in Mexico!”
My husband and I stopped for lunch at the Bodeguita del Medio during our stay in Playa del Carmen. Because it was early in the day, the restaurant wasn't very full -- there were only a few other couples who had stopped for lunch -- but the service was excellent, and the food was delicious! When we told our server that my husband is from Cuba, he even brought us a small appetizer -- one of his favourite items on the menu -- free of charge! We were very pleased with his dedication to customer service -- it's the little touches like these that make a positive and lasting impression!
The meal was a little pricey -- but I wouldn't call it "expensive," and we were certainly pleased with the overall quality of the food and service. Since my husband and I are both experts on Cuban food, I can honestly say that this is "Cuban food with a Mexican twist" -- i.e. meals were served with black beans in a tortilla shell (not so Cuban!) -- but that didn't bother us in the least! Also, we saw that they had a set up for live music, but because we were there so early, we missed out on the live Cuban tunes...
Overall, I would strongly recommend La Bodeguita del Medio -- and if you're in the mood for Cuban music, I would suggest that you go there in the evening so you can catch the live musicians!
