“Gem, North of Playa Del Carmen”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2009

Hotel Le Reve is a well-hidden gem, just 10 minutes north of Playa del Carmen proper. The property is beautiful and the staff sincerely goes out of their way to ensure you enjoy your visit.

The hotel's restaurant, Naay, is top-notch gourmet. (The staff emailed us before our visit to ask what our dietary preferences were). We were even treated to an al fresco cooking lesson by the chefs.

This is an ideal place for a romantic getaway or for anybody who just wants to relax. It is a true "boutique" experience.

I have never written a review before but felt so compelled after spending an anniversary at Le Reve. It was the most romantic spot, and we were catered to as if we were royalty by the gracious and elegant staff.

The layout of the hotel gives the impression of complete seclusion. Even the pool has places for you to relax away from the other guest (if you are not using your own private pool)

One evening they arranged a private dinner on the beach with a 5 course mayan dinner and chaises to cuddle on and enjoy the lights of Cozumel. It was a night to remember!

And they are dog friendly!!! In fact, when we checked in, they had bones and a ball for our small dog. Sadly, Playa del Carmen does not allow dogs on the beach but our dog had a blast playing on Le Reve's gorgeous big beach!

Le Reve's attention to detail is amazing. The owner told me that their goal was to cater to whatever the guest wanted even if it meant finding a place for their helicopter to land...and they have achieved this aim with their level of service. And the price is very conservative as you would expect such luxury to be quite expensive!

But the most important part is the location...I, personally, would chose to stay in Tulum if given the option on the Riviera Mayan coast. However, staying in Tulum adds hours of travel time to the trip that we would like to avoid. Le Reve has the feeling of Tulum but hours closer to the Cancun airport so we can easily come for a weekend jaunt. Additionally, if you want a taste of nightlife, Playa's tourism is just a short trip (they provide transportation into Playa). Needless to say, I highly highly recommend Le Reve for a couple who is looking for everything Riviera Maya has to offer! Or if you are looking for a beach wedding spot. It is a dream...

The hotel was beautiful the staff friendly and good, but it had so many faults its unbelievable.. They claim its a 5 star.. but the approach to the hotel is on a dirt road. The reception is a desk with a chair. The staff doesnt understand English and that is a must for a 5 star hotel. The rooms are nice but the showers have no hot water and the floors are slippery. If your lucky you would find a scorpion in there like I did.. The lighting in the rooms is not that great. The plunge pool doesnt have any hot water as well and since there is always a breeze you cannot use that either..The color runs from the furniture so if you sit on it with white damp clothes, kiss them good bye. The food that was a disaster the menu is limited and the food that the serve is inedible and expensive for what they serve you.The breakfast is again quite bad.. The entire finishing for the hotel is just as if the owners have picked out the architect from school and put him to do the job or they got conned.. The beach in front of the hotel is not useable as its rocky. The pool is alright but again would give it a ten on ten. If your driving to the hotel good luck in finding it as there is not one sign on the road that leads to the hotel.. There is no TV in the room as well.. Its in the middle of no where so if you want to go to playa del carmen then you need to get a taxi or drive there. The spa is in the open so enjoy a massage in the open with all the wind..

We stayed here for four nights after touring the Yucatan peninsula.

We splashed out on a bungalow, and were pleased that we did - it's really nice to wake up and look out of bed through the french doors straight at the beach and the sea beyond. I can imagine that the garden rooms, which are immediately behind and which have no view at all, would be pretty disappointing. But note that the private plunge pool is very small and not very private.

The place was almost empty when we stayed there - one night, there was just one other couple staying. So the service was very personal, very friendly, and we had the grounds almost to ourselves.

The food is not cheap, and because of the locations it is quite difficult to go elsewhere. But the chef is very good, and the menu is quite extensive, so you would have no difficulty eating off it for a few days.

A number of contributors have commented on the location. It is hard to find so ask for directions in advance, and/or follow the sign for Azul Fives, which is a large resort next door - just about to open when we were at Le Reve. The beach is relatively quiet in front of Le Reve, but there are large resorts nearby, so expect some 'gawpers' walking up and down the beach.

Overall, it was a pleasant, relaxing place to stay for a few days.

We went to Le Reve on our honeymoon, and were totally thrilled with it. Such a great boutique hotel... so relaxing and chic. Our room was on the beach, and it was great. The bed was probably the most comfortable we have had at any hotel, including Ritz and other 5-star hotels.... and the staff did a great job of creating a luxurious and romantic vibe every day. We were surprised that there was no tv in the room, but frankly after a day we were so happy that there wasn't.. the in room ipod (with great pre-loaded music) was all we needed... and we just relaxed at the beach and had a complete chance to escape from stress and civilization. The hotel felt very cozy and safe. The beach is a bit rocky all along that area, but Le Reve provided reef shoes so going in was no problem. water was clean and warm. There were enough palapas on the private beach at le reve that all the guests had their own... all of the staff was great, super attentive and friendly... Restaurant food was okay but not super fancy, but there are plenty of other places nearby and in town. We would go back anytime - great for a relaxing and romantic getaway - very quiet, great for couples. If you want a party spot, this is not it... but for a chic, luxurious and more natural beach experience this is it.

Just got back from 11 days in the Mexican Riviera and we stayed at a small hotel called Le Reve Hotel (www.hotellereve.com ).

This is a small hotel right on the beach just north of Playa del Carmen.

We were looking an adult oriented hotel that wasn't crowded where we could relax and expect great service.

We had no idea when we booked Le Reve online that it would turn out so great. I must admit that the road from the highway into Le Reve is an experience in dodging many many pot holes but it's worth it when you get to the hotel.

The hotel is right on the beach and every room is no more than a couple of hundred feet from the beach and everyone has a view of the ocean. We stayed in the master suite and it had a commanding view of the ocean, beach, and pool. We just got back yesterday so I have yet to post my pictures but will do so in a couple of days.

Aside from the terrific beach views, privacy and spacious rooms, Le Reve has great staff. The staff are very friendly and attentive and always remembered what you like and don't like and so after the first day you certainly felt right at home. When we sat down to eat in the excellent restaurant the waiter and chef would engage you in friendly conversation and then bring out whatever you wanted even if it wasn't on the menu.

One evening we wanted to go to the Coco Bongo night club in Playa del Carmen and the staff from the hotel accompanied us and made sure that we were in the right line-ups to get priority service and when we were finished at Coco Bongo they took us to another club where we danced until 5 AM.

When we spent the day on the beach in front of the hotel we sat on mahogany beach chairs with freshly laundered covers that the hotel staff put out every morning. No need to reserve a chair, it's a small hotel and there is always a suitable spot available. At lunch time we were serverd drinks and lunch on white table cloths over a table right on the beach!

No other resort that we've been to has ever done that!

The arranged car rentals, taxies, night club reservations, restaurant reservations and anything that we wanted. We definitely made new friends and look forward to going back just as soon as we can.

This is one hotel that really tries and definitely exceeded our expectations.

If you're looking for a great holiday experience and you don't want to bring the kids with you Le Reve Hotel is the place!!

  • Liked — The small size of the hotel and the staff to guest ratio. Service was exceptional. Access to the beach and views were incredible.
  • Disliked — The access road into the hotel.

My husband and I stayed at Le Reve for 8 days over Christmas vacation and it was absolutely fantastic in every way. Our flight into Cancun was delayed and the driver stuck around and waited for us for a couple hours so we could get to the hotel. The check in was probably the most pleasant check in experience I have ever had complete with a complementary welcome drink and all. The hotel itself is very small but pristine, friendly, unpretentious, and beautiful. The rooms are simple with no television or radio (unless you book a bungalow which comes with an ipod) and clean and very comfortable. There is one restaurant which serves all your meals and drinks in the open air dining room, in your room, on the beach, or pool side. I consider myself a bit of a food snob and I have to say the only item on the menu that I found questionable was the hamburger. Everything else was absolutely delicious. And to make it even better, the chefs, the wait staff, and the bartenders were very accomodating and even appeared to be excited to fulfill our special off-menu requests. The chef made us mocaljete...table side, two different kinds of tamales from scratch, a very special Mayan twist on a caipirina and they did these things and more with smiles and very friendly banter. I am usually ready to leave a destination by check out time but we were trying to figure out how we could cancel the rest of our trip so we could stay at Le Reve through the following week and go home right from there. No such luck. I don't particularly enjoy tourist locations or activities so we were very happy that Le Reve was a short distance away from the tourist ridden Playa Del Carmen which gave us the serene, quiet, and tranquil vacation that we were hoping for. If I ever return to that part of the country again, I will definitely be staying at Le Reve. I love this hotel and all the staff were absolutely perfect in every way. I just hope that it stays small and quaint and beautifully unspoiled by loud and obnoxious tourists.
