I discovered Helados and Sorbeteria Colon on this visit to Merida (my 4th). It's located on the plaza under the arches and it's very busy all the time. I can see why. Their sorbets made of tropical fruit are clearly out of this world. I visited four times and had guanabana the first time after asking for mamey, which they didn't have, then coconut sorbet after asking for mamey, which they said was out of season (a filthy lie!). Then at the my hotel, Luz en Yucatan, one of the many friendly guests told me they had mamey sorbet there that day. I made a bee line for the place and was finally rewarded with a sorbet from a fruit I grew up as a child. Mamey looks like a small football, brown, and then luscious red orange on the inside with the shiniest black pit I have ever seen. The flesh of this fruit is sweet and sensual in texture. It screams to be made into ice scream, and in this case sorbet. I was so happy with it that noon that I went back that same evening and had another sample of mamey sorbet. Check out my picture.
