My family and I recently completed a week in the Yucatan and Campeche. The Villa at Merida was our last stop and one of our only regrets on the entire trip was that we had only one night in the Villa. From the moment we arrived until we left, the staff were welcoming, friendly, and efficient. We arrived from the airport at Merida (also excellent, by the way, with modern terimals and friendly staff) in the heat of the day and taken straight to our rooms with no delay spent at a 'Front Desk'. In fact, there isn't one. We then took the kids to the pool and spent the afternoon enjoying the sun. Our refreshments were replenished throughout the afternoon.
Although the Villa is on one of the main streets of Merida and within ten minutes of the airport, you would never know it. The location is very central but once you go through the front door, it is like entering a different time and place. The entire property is peaceful and beautifully decorated. (NB The website has many photographs which are true to the property.) The rooms are full of character, very comfortable, with great amenities and this hotel was the only one during our trip that made sure we had two additional small beds for the children.
For dinner, we walked from the hotel to central Merida and found a restaurant then walked back to the Villa. We had evening drinks in the courtyard, enjoying the peace and tranquility and the lovely sound of the fountain; so peaceful that my little boy fell asleep in my lap.
Due to an early flight, we had to leave the hotel at 6am the next morning. Despite the early hour, our breakfast was waiting for us at 5:45 am (as requested) and our transportation to the airport was ready and provided at no additional charge.
I travel extensively on business in Europe and I have rarely experienced a hotel as friendly and elegant as the Villa. We were treated like guests, not customers. It is a hidden gem and one I will certainly return to.
