“A good stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

We stayed here for one night on New Years Eve on our way to Progreso for the winter. It was a last minute reservation and our usual hotel was booked. We found the hotel to be quite pleasant. The room was large, nice bathroom with large, hot shower and nice toiletries. King size bed was comfortable. Room and premises were very clean.

It has a wonderful courtyard with small pool and a nice breakfast area. The rate includes a small continental breakfast which was fine with us. Staff were friendly though not speaking much English but we got by. Honor bar for cervaza was a nice touch.

We found the hotel to be in a good location close enough to the Paseo as well as to Centro. The cons...the price which we felt was on the high side for Merida. And no internet access in the rooms,we had to go outside or down to the courtyard.

Though overall we would recommend it.

Our group reserved 3 rooms. We ended up with the king size room right near the front lobby. The room had high ceilings and a hammock. Unfortunately, the walls were dark colored and there was no real useful window. One window was way too high, and couldn't be darkened. The other slits faced onto the lobby and had no shade on them. We had to put towels in the 5 foot wide and 4 inch high slit to avoid having hall light enter our room. I would not recommend this room, so consequently I couldn't recommend the hotel unless you could guarantee to not get one of the 2 rooms at the front with this layout.

The other rooms are nice- with windows facing a courtyard and nice breezes flowing into the rooms.

The breakfast was fine- yogurt, juice, bread and fresh fruit but it's probably best to avoid juice and get peeled fruit if you're from another country with a potentially more sensitive stomach. You can order eggs if you'd like for an extra charge. Friendly staff. Off street locked parking area also.

The hotel is a bit too far from the plaza- it would be better if it were perhaps 3 blocks closer in.

Hotel Marionetas was such a nice hacienda. We enjoyed our stay here very much. The room was great..location was a few blocks from the Plaza, which is no big deal, we enjoyed our daily walks. Would stay here again.

When on my wedding preparation we stay in Marionetas, it was a wonderful experience. if you want to get away from big chain souless hotels this may be a very good option. It is a bit hidden but is truly outstanding.

The place use to be a marionet theater and the owner did a very good restauration keeping the original architecture plus some modern facilities like the swimming pool which on a star night is splendid.

The only downside we saw was the breakfast. It wasnt good but anyhow being in Merida you dont want to stay in the hotel and eat hotel food.

Room Tip: Ask for the second floor rooms.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

We stayed for 2 nights at Marionetas in August 2012 on a trip to explore the town and Chichen Itza. Generally it was fine, but we felt our time in Merida would have been better if we had stayed somewhere else - probably closer to town. The location was not great - while it only looks like a few blocks to town on the map, it was about 6-8 blocks into town and this was really unpleasant in the heat of summer. We struggled getting around in the heat and there are not really transport options. There are no restaurants, cafes, bars or shops close by. The room was ok but not what we were expecting from the photos on the internet. The rooms looked bright, light and colourful in photos. We were in one of the downstairs rooms by the pool - it was dark, gloomy and the decor was dull. The room was also quite musty - it was too hot to leave the windows open, so with them shut it was a dark, stuffy room. The layout of the room is a bit awkward too and only one bed of two could see the tv. Perhaps some of the other rooms are better - we may have gotten the dud room! The room was quite clean and the antique furtniture and fittings are lovely. The rooms are quite noisy - we could hear the neighbours dog through the night, and other people in their rooms and around the pool. We used the pool area - it is small but refreshing for a quick dip, however there is not much room to sit around and it is a bit uncomfortable if there is already a group using it. The breakfast was fine and the dining area by the pool is nice. The staff didn't speak much english at all and we struggled a bit communicating with them. They were fine, but not as friendly and welcoming as at other places I have stayed at in Mexico. On the whole it is an ok hotel for the price, but I think with so many options in Merida for the price, we could have done better.

Room Tip: Maybe the rooms upstairs have better light
