Best working vacation I've ever had, due in large part to the ambience and the friendliness of Mauro, Raul, and Pepe, the owner and staff at Las Arecas. Although "staff" really has the wrong sound to it, since I felt like I was part of the family after about 3 days. I spent a month there, working on a book and enjoying Merida and environs, but really the best part of it was having a real home to come back to after beating the streets or riding a bus through the campo. It is without question the best place I've stayed in all my travels. Affordable, clean, friendly, homey, comfortable, close to the Centro. Every morning Raul asks you if you want a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice along with breakfast. Ask him about the 6 Italian greyhounds he has at home. Mauro is extraordinarily cheerful, hard-working, and accomodating. The operation is a small and affordable one, so he can't accept credit cards, but don't let the Western Union method of making a reservation give you any jitters. Recommended!

I was going to Merida for 8 days in Jan 2006 and was looking for something quiet and affordable. I booked Las Arecas based only on reviews of previous Trip Advisor commentators, but with no other information on what to expect.

I must say my experience during this stay lived up to the positive reviews of previous visitors. The owner Mauro was very courteous and friendly, as well as prompt in his replies to my email queries. I booked the Arecas room, which is towards the front of the house, has AC and a private bath.

I was getting into Merida late at night and was concerned if someone would be there at the B&B. No worries - Mauro was actually waiting at the door! The B&B is actually a large, 200 year old, if somewhat modest house, with lots of character. The furnihings are not plush, nor is there TV, but then I wasn't looking for such things.

My room (Arecas) was very large and nice. The only slight downside is that it is rather dark and the lighting is rather dim. But it was very quiet and spacious and that's what was most important for me. Breakfasts were rather simple (bread, coffee, and fresh bananas from the tree in the courtyard) but I appreciated the personal attention and freshly squeezed oranje juice. Mauro and his colleague were both speak English and were very helpful in organizing trips (e.g. to Uxmal), and well as with other local information. Finally, about the location --- it is only 2 blocks or so from the bustling downtown area and very central, yet has the advantage of being much more quiet. Also, since all rooms are removed from the street, they are all away from the street noise.

Bottomline, great experience and excellent value for the money.

We arrived in Merida and went to our hotel we reserved. I was not impressed but we needed a place to put our luggage and a place to sleep.

I remember looking at Las Arecas online so the next day we headed over hoping there would be a room available.

Mauro, the owner, received us graciously even though he was extremely busy and he was not expecting us. Within 2 hours he had the Zac-beh room ready for us. The room was very clean and neatly furnished. It was cheaper than our 2nd rate hotel the night before. Our vacation could now begin. Mauro is generous with his information, trusting of his guests and truly makes his guests welcome and at ease. The home is beautiful and very well taken care of. Also to mention that Mauro said nothing to us when we clogged the toilet (we were unaware of not flushing toilet paper in Mexico)...he just fixed it immediately while we were gone for the day. During this vacation we stayed at a hotel in Playa Del Carmen, the one night at the Merida Hotel and a couple of nights at an All Inclusive in Cancun. Not one of these hotels gave us the service, cleanliness and affordability that Las Arecas did. Congrats, Mauro, on a job well done. You deserve your success.

Now for the bad news. It looks as though we are not the only ones who agree with the above statements which means....
The best kept secret is out! I hope there will be a room available for us when we come back.

P.S. Note that Mauro's prices have increased slightly. Do not let that deter you. He still has the best prices in town with the best accommodations and location.

I have stayed numerous times at Las Arecas, totalling several months. That in itself tells you that I enjoy staying there and feel that I am getting excellent value!

I love being in the old center of Mérida, where I walk to everything at any hour. Mauro, his friends, pets and the other guests always make me feel most welcome. Mauro has been more than helpful to me!

I obviously am very pleased with Las Arecas apartments, or I would not keep returning. However, the pics on the site will give you a good idea of how pleasant the colonial house and beautiful court yard is.

Mauro speaks enough English to help those with limited Spanish.
