Aside from too little information on most of the exhibits, the weirdest thing about this museum (and I do LOVE museums!) is that you begin
with the creation of the universe, then work your way through evolution - so far so good - but turn the corner and step into a modern Maya room, then work your way backwards to pre-history. This was so incomprehensible to my guest and I that we actually walked the entire lengthof the Mayan section to its end and then back to where evolution left us. There´s no continuity, no logical flow and whoever thought up the progression should be shot for stupidity! Many of the exhibits are wonderful, although little information or dates are given and the plaques on the wall are mayan height (read: too low for average humans) so you are constantly bending down or squatting to read them. The English translations are the best I´ve seen in my 14 years here and the dioramas are great, but still, the museum leaves much to be desired after all the hoopla (and money) spent on it . It's more of a tourist thing than an actual learning experience. Visit instead the small but absolutely wonderful museum at Dzxbilchaltun if you´re genuinely interested in the pre-hispanic culture that existed in the Yucatan. It's still the best in the area. Then enjoy a lovely lunch at Hacienda Xcanatun.
