Merida is known for it's excellent Mayan and Mexican cuisine. However Villa Italian is a hidden gem for those that crave the best of Italian food. We joined two long-term expat residents of Merida who embody the best of gourmets. This restaurant is now the only place they frequent. Now we know why. The food was really extraordinary. Superb antipastos. Fresh and safe salads. Home made mozzarella served with freshly picked tomatoes. Pesto as good as you will find in Italy. And two gracious owners/chefs/managers who supervise the kitchen and converse with their guests. We arrived early, at 8 pm, to find an empty restaurant. However, after a bottle of excellent chianti, the place was completely filled by 9 pm, and, it turned out, we were the only expatriates enjoying their delicious veal, pasta, and fish. This gem is a 80 pesos cab ride from Centro and come late to enjoy the local ambiance.
